This fella by Roman Emeror was ultra impressive winning his 1st start & I think we'll be hearing a lot more about him................& his young trainer Clap

The in-form Michael Hickmott stable will target the South Australian Derby next Autumn with Oath Of Omerta after a fighting victory over 1550m on debut.

Hickmott brought the three-year old colt for $13,000 from the Sydney sales after being impressed with his physical appearance.

“From the moment I bought him, he looked like he was going to be a beautiful, big stayer so we have done everything to develop this horse to be a stayer,” Hickmott said.

“That is why we kicked him off straight to that distance. He is only going to get better as the races get further.”

Hickmott will be guided by Oath Of Omerta’s recovery from his first start before confirming future plans. However, he mentioned an 1800m event for three-year olds at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day as an option.

Those who frequent the Breeding Forum may be aware that I bred Oath of Omerta and sold him to Michael Hickmott at the 2019 Classic Sale. At the time, I was really pleased thatMichael was the buyer, even more so when he told me that he would take him home, geld him and gice him six months to furnish, which he desperately needed.

I'm biased, but it was a big win on Saturday. First start over 1550m in the BM72, drew the widest so needed to lead to get in, made to work to find the front, attacked in the lead and was at least three quarters of a length behind at the 100 before fighting off the canvas to win. You'd have to think that he has lots of improvement in him. Fingers crossed for some black type.

Thanks for the memory jog & now I do remember posts re. a Roman Emeror youngster Shocked Well done on the production front but commiserations re. the price but gee, I think you've some exciting times to look forward to!
Michael gave huge raps to his favourite in the race, citing how messy run it was but geez, that doesn't do yours justice as he was having his 1st start so had no race smarts at all! He did it really tough to come back as he did Heart

Well done and congratualations.

THat is a amazing win, to beat such a quality and experienced horse on debut.

Shame they are aiming so low with him.

Australian Derby should at least be on the radar.

It's always lovely to here all that hard work paid off with a winner.  Hope he does prove to be Derby class.  If this early one is too soon there are plenty of others to concentrate on.

Thanks for the chart djebel & furious, Michael said they're targetting the SA Derby with him. He appears commendably imo, ever mindful of longevity & strike rate with his horses.
This post from robbo on the Inglis 2019 thread:

"
Yesterday was a very stressful day. I went to the races on Wednesday expecting to see a vibrant sales complex full of provincial and country trainers inspecting horses, but nothing could have been further from the truth. You could have fired a gun through the Riverside complex. At this point vendors became very worries, especially after the softness towards the latter stages of the main sale. Some withdrew their lots on Wednesday evening and many more spoke about it.

Come sale time at 10:00 yesterday morning, there were more horses than buyers and the buyers that were there were sitting on their hands, causing horses to pass in and then seeking to negotiate with what they were hoping was a desperate vendor. Those buyers that were there were looking for trade horses for Asia and/or ready to run types, and a big, gangly Roman Emperor wasn't going to fit the bill. Lovely colt but needs time and the buyers there didn't have it.

I revisited the reserve to what was reasonable and then in the sale used the trick rem286 referred to above by putting him "on the market" below the reserve to get a few more bids. It partially worked and at the 13K he is more or less a break-even result.

What is particularly pleasing, however, is that Michael Hickmott bought him and he will be trained either by Michael or his brother Robert. Michael said that he will geld him and then turn him out for twelve months, which was music to my ears. So he goes to a good home that understands how to train horses to get a trip and gives the mare every chance. To my mind, that's worth more than a couple of extra bids in the sale-ring.

It was an interesting experience - great to be on the other side. Not great for the blood pressure, thoug"..

Very interesting preparation from Oath of Omerta so far. On paper, it doesn't look great. However, first up over a mile he was snagged back to last in a very slowly run race and worked home in the second fastest last 600 of the race. Then, second up, and at only his fourth start, Michael Hickmott put him in an open BM 72 over 2025m against the older horses. He settled third behind two tearaway leaders before carting the field up, and was still there at the 50 before knocking up late, beaten 1.9L. It was like putting a 14 year old kid in a footy game against grown men.

He should be peaking third up and then will look to get to the 2500m of the SAJC Derby fourth up. He is a bit one-paced but can stay and is showing encouraging signs. As Explosive Jack showed on Saturday, there isn't a massive gap between BM racing and 3YO staying events.

Oath of Omerta goes round in the Group 3 Chairman's Stakes tomorrow at Morphettville. He has drawn horribly but if he improves from last start (which he should third up) then he should be competitive.

I'm sure we all hope he does you proud robbo, if not this prep, then certainly as a more mature 4yo Thumbs Up At least you know he's been set for the Derby, unlike a few of his opposition.

This guy was excellent first up from a long spell running 5th of 12 beaten on 1.8L over 1800m.

Today’s Class 1 over 2000m at Murray Bridge looks like the perfect opportunity for him to get another win on the board.

It was great to see him win again - clearly he has had some issues and getting him back to the winners circle seems like it has been a long road. As Michael said post-race, he hasn't got the body to sprint and he has trouble getting the oxygen in his lungs to stay.

He is backing up on Saturday at Morphettville over 2250m, and is $6.00 - $4.60.

3 weeks to the Lord Stakes 2600 - would seem logical.

There is no better feeling standing up than booting home one that you've bred. Especially twice in a week.
