HAPPENING NOW: 14 potential jurors have been qualified in Steve Bannon trial. The magic number is 22 and it seems achievable today given the current pace. |

Bannon jury seated. His lawyer asked why the trial is going ahead when Bannon has no defense after 2 more applications to have the trial stopped or delayed. Judge agreed he has none and told them to get on with it. Expected to be very quick trial 1-2 days.

But still Republican voters have not changed their minds one bit according to latest opinion polls. Donnie was spot on about his deplorables from the start.

The USA is surely and most sadly a failed democracy. Which is hugely bad news for its allies.

A reminder that while he still has a lot of deplorable Republicans dont care how many cops got killed and that democracy is on the line, the Orange Insurrectionist lost the last election polling 8 million votes less than Biden.

Steve Bannon found guilty of all 3 charges today with the jury deciding in 3 hours, including lunch.

Forcing prisoners to be locked up with Bannon would violate “not only the Constitution but the Geneva Conventions,” an attorney said. |

Why the right-wing media is fracturing in its defense of TrumpGreg Sargent https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/07/25/fox-news-trump-right-wing-media-fracture/ The Jan. 6 House select committee’s revelations have grown so
overwhelmingly powerful that even some right-wing media figures have
begun acknowledging their seriousness. This is fracturing conservative media:
A few high-profile journalists and institutions are admitting the
obvious, while many other outlets continue running outright propaganda
on Donald Trump’s behalf. This split became more visible over the weekend when Fox News anchor Bret Baier — unlike most Fox personalities — sharply denounced Trump over new revelations that the former president deliberately allowed the mob rampage to continue on Jan. 6, 2021. Let’s be blunt as to why this schism is emerging: It’s not an option for many in the right-wing media to admit that Trump transgressed, as it would disrupt their deeper aim of casting the Jan. 6 committee’s efforts as illegitimate. Having tried to discredit the committee for months, if they concede the gravity of what it has revealed, it would wreck their own project. This is why Baier is such a noteworthy exception. He criticized Trump over the 187 minutes that passed before he finally called on the rioters to stand down. Trump’s own advisers strongly suggested in testimony that he deliberately refrained, apparently to keep pressure on his vice president, Mike Pence, to disrupt the electoral count in service of Trump’s coup scheme. “Laying out all of these 187 minutes makes him look horrific,” Baier said Sunday on Fox. Baier noted that “the most powerful part” was that people testifying against Trump have been Republicans who had previously rooted for Trump’s “success.” That 187 minutes was also too much for several right-leaning editorial boards. A Wall Street Journal editorial slammed Trump for violating his oath of office and duty to the country, declaring that he “has shown not an iota of regret.” Meanwhile, a New York Post editorial strongly suggested that Trump deliberately enlisted the mob’s violent help to sustain the pressure on Pence. “Trump has proven himself unworthy to be this country’s chief executive again,” the editorial concluded, saying something that most Republicans still will not. Yet for all this, much of the right-wing media remains in full agitprop mode. As a new piece in the New York Times details, the most influential commentators on Fox and elsewhere are ridiculing the very idea that Pence’s security detail feared for their lives, describing the Jan. 6 hearings as a show trial and casting the rioters as the real victims of law enforcement run amok. This schism partly reflects differing relations to D.C.’s power centers. Figures such as Baier, and perhaps the Journal editorial board, are in some sense linked to the Washington press corps, care what its members think, and respect its professional conventions and institutions, such as the White House Correspondents’ Association. “There are clearly some folks who see lasting value to being part of the D.C. establishment media,” Olivier Knox, who writes The Post’s Daily 202 newsletter and previously saw all this up close as former head of the WHCA, told me. By contrast, Fox’s more bombastic right-wing personalities affect a much more antagonistic, bomb-throwing posture toward the D.C. journalistic establishment (though this is often largely performative). As Knox put it, their public posture is for “burning it all down.” But Knox also said this split might be penetrating Rupert Murdoch’s world: The press magnate owns the Journal (which blasted Trump’s conduct) but also Fox (whose personalities continue standing by him). Knox noted that this divide will be something Republicans heed in taking the temperature of “influencers heading into 2022 and 2024.” Beyond this, however, much of the right-wing media also has to keep the propaganda flowing precisely because many figures have attacked the Jan. 6 inquiry itself as illegitimate all along. Even worse, as Matt Gertz demonstrates at Media Matters, many of these right-wing media figures spent months in the run-up to Jan. 6 validating the very lies that drove Trump’s coup attempt and even helped launder the legal “theories” supposedly justifying the effort. They then pushed “false flag” conspiracy theories about Jan. 6, relentlessly played down the violent criminality of the rioters and strained to whitewash the corruption of Trump’s top co-conspirators. In short, many of those outlets were partly responsible for helping persuade millions that Trump’s coup attempt was a righteous cause, that the election could be reversed via procedural options legitimately open to him, and that efforts to hold Trump and/or his co-conspirators accountable for the coup are the true crime. Those right-wing media figures have always had an easy out. They could claim they didn’t condone the violence of Jan. 6 while maintaining it wasn’t really an insurrection, or was just a protest gone wrong, or that the attack wasn’t meaningfully linked to Trump, his movement and its genuine authoritarian aspirations, which are plainly shared by many Republicans in Congress. But now that it has been demonstrated with great clarity that Trump tried to weaponize the Jan. 6 violence to complete the job of destroying our political order, that justification has been foreclosed. Which has at least pushed some outlets into acknowledging what’s right at the end of everyone’s noses. As for the pro-Trump media holdouts? They can’t concede that the revelations they lied about for so long are so incredibly grave — or that they arose from precisely the effort at accountability that they tried to discredit for so long — without forcefully indicting themselves. |

The Washington Post is just now reporting the DOJ criminal investigation into Trump is ramping up.
Yesterday's Pence COS Marc Short giving evidence at the DOJ's grand jury was a solid indication things are moving fast.

Trump's inner turmoil: He craves credit for January 6 — but can't admit it for fear of prisonAs hinted at by the deposed witnesses in the video, including both
Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, one of the major reasons that his staff
and family were pushing Trump to give a speech denouncing the Capitol
riot on January 7, 2021 was to keep him out of legal trouble. Any fool
could tell, from Trump's inciting speech and his extreme reluctance to
call off the rioters, that Trump wanted the violence that day and was
thrilled that his plans for an insurrection had gone as well as they
had. But having him offer a statement, however reluctantly, claiming
that he was appalled by the violence was a necessary step to
constructing a legal and political defense. It was about having a
document Trump's lawyers could point to when arguing (falsely) that
Trump didn't mean for the riot to happen and that he was unaware of the
effect his words would have. The problem is that Trump's desire to stay out of jail was in direct
conflict with another guiding Trump impulse: to gloat about the violence
he inflicted on Congress and take full credit for unleashing the
Capitol insurrection. The inner battle between Trump's desire to evade legal consequences and
his longing to yell "yeah I did it" was amply displayed in the "blooper
reel" that the House committee investigating January 6 shared on
Thursday night. While most of the public discussion about the video was
mocking Trump for not wanting to say "yesterday," what is really most
crucial is his unwillingness to either admit the election was over or to
call for legal consequences for the rioters he sent to the Capitol. https://www.salon.com/2022/07/26/inner-turmoil-he-craves-credit-for-january-6--but-cant-admit-it-for-fear-of/ |

But the video Luria released Monday gives even more crucial context. It
really underscores how much Trump was being pressured by his staff to
release a video for purely legal reasons. No one seems to believe Trump
felt anything but glee over the chaos he caused. No, the post-riot
condemnation was ass-covering, pure and simple. But Trump, who lies
about everything all the time, was struggling to pretend to feel
anything but joy over the riot. Distancing himself from the rioters
meant he couldn't take credit for the insurrection, and that was clearly
bumming him out.

When it rains on Donald Trump, it pours. And the deluge is just beginning.https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/07/27/justice-department-investigating-trump/ Once an investigation picks up steam, it often speeds up exponentially. Leads beget more leads. Witnesses put investigators on the trail of more witnesses. And in this case, the witnesses with the most knowledge of critical events (e.g., former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, chief coup architect John Eastman) have every reason to sprint to prosecutors to strike deals — before the others make their deals first. Remember also that there are three separate investigations underway: one conducted by the Justice Department, one by the district attorney in Fulton County, Ga., and one by the Jan. 6 committee. Indeed, some of the witnesses — including the now rarely seen Meadows, who avoided being charged with contempt of Congress — might have already begun cooperating with prosecutors. (Meadows was recently described by committee member Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) as a “star witness” because “his texts that he did produce is the thing that really gave us the road map for where to go next.”) The question now is not whether Trump will be exposed to criminal investigations but how far along and how fast they are moving. Meanwhile, the public’s view of his conduct grows ever more negative, with possible consequences for his party. If Trump feels a tad claustrophobic, it’s because the walls are closing in. |

Look no further than the 6 Republican primaries held today and particularly Arizona.
Primaries are being held today to select the Republican candidates for Governor, Secretary of State, Senator Attorney General. The Trump candidate has drawn clear in polls for all positions, the only requirement being that you declare Trump won in 2020 and you will do whatever it takes to correct that. The Supreme Court isn't interested, they see all electoral matters as state matters so it goes back to these people to decide for themselves. Democrats dont mind this today because their party would rather contest November elections against Trump big lie cultists than a mainstream Republican.
