The last chance for some Trumpist mischief. Matt Gaetz is apparently trying to gin up a couple of votes to force debate on the certification.

This happened today. Someone really doesn't want to go to prison.

Washington Post: President Trump called GA Governor Kemp asking him to convince state legislators to overturn Biden’s win in GA. Trump requested Kemp call a special session & urge state legislators to select their own electors that would support Trump, source says

trump's madness is becoming even more transparent. The only people who can't see the madness are his lunatic supporters. He was never a presidents backside. Devoid of anything resembling a caring human being.
the next 40 days are going to be of catastrophic, shakespearean proportions. Pardons, sackings, denial and rage.

Speaking of pardons some names have started to emerge in the pardons for payments scheme, and it involves all the usual suspects.

Roles of Trump fundraiser, Kushner's attorney were scrutinized in pardon bribe probe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A former Trump fundraiser and a prominent lawyer were among the people scrutinized by the Justice Department for their roles in what a judge described as a possible bribery scheme to win a presidential pardon for a convicted felon, lawyers for the men said Thursday.

97. Over the past two weeks, President Trump has not tweeted once about the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. (despite the fact that Covid-19 has killed more than 23,000 Americans during this time period), yet has tweeted about election fraud 97 times.

Twitter said yesterday that after January 20 Trump loses his world leader status and is subject to the same rules as everyone else including banning for violation of Twitter's terms, something he does scores of times a day.

Is there anybody in Trump's inner circle who does not need a pardon? Seriously.

How to talk to a flat-earther

With the rise of QAnon and the spread of misinformation about the pandemic, many people this year have had the bewildering and distressing experience of watching a loved one "fall down the rabbit hole".

But for those most affected it can be difficult to know how to respond, or even where to turn for help.

"I would [once] look at these people … and think they were contemptible, reprehensible idiots," Kasey said.

"And then I saw my mum become a conspiracy theorist and I was like, well, this is someone that I love, and this is someone who is not stupid."

For friends and family, a starting point is to recognise that people hold beliefs for good reasons, according to Australian Psychological Society president Tamara Cavenett.

Conversations are best structured around gentle enquiries about how these beliefs formed and attempts to understand each other.

"[It's] not to necessarily try to change the belief outright, but introduce little pieces of doubt," Ms Cavenett said.

Confronting people too directly runs the risk of expecting them to admit their entire worldview is wrong and having them shut down the conversation, she said.

We've seen this year how some COVID-deniers in the US go so far as to angrily maintain their belief that the virus is fake right up to their dying breath.

One way to handle this is to give someone the "Golden Gate of Retreat": the space to recognise they are wrong without feeling attacked and doubling down.

"I'd also encourage family members to just consider [that] the other person doesn't have to hold all the same beliefs [as you]," Ms Cavenett said.

"It's really about whether or not the belief is interfering with their life."

Clear proof if ever it was needed that being in power matters more to him than being a leader.

The problem with Trump is that he is an opportunist, and he has identified that you can get away with bad behaviour in the office of POTUS, because of the inordinate amount of respect people have for the office itself, regardless of the occupant. The two need to be coalesced, the office is only as good as whoever holds it.

Maybe a royal family does have it's place, following that logic? The forlock triggers can have their person to bow down to regardless of their qualifications for the position and the political can be expected to perform the role as required.

Except that he told you exactly what he was going to do before the 2016 election.

In a ceremonial position, all sorts of eccentricities can be tolerated, it may in fact be a recognition that POTUS has moved in the direction of a ceremonial position, that the population are not baying for his blood, after the historic failure of not only underestimating the risk of COVID, but continuing to either play it down, or ignore it. Fauci bowed down before the office, in being very measured in any criticism of Trump's nonsense remarks about injecting bleach and what not, it seems to do otherwise would be like killing off an icon, and no-one wants to be the man that killed a comfortable myth.

The "myth" being, that the office, and those who attain it, are sacrosanct. But it isn't just POTUS that such an aura attaches itself. If in science we accept that arguments from authority are useless, it is past time we need to bring that kind of thinking into the wider society.

Yep, ceremonial, not really having the power that seems to attach to the position, but only existing so long as it is in line with a broader consensus. I really doubt if a complete madman occupied the position and ordered a nuclear strike, for reasons not widely agreed to down the command chain, it would be followed through with.

I think you buy the bullsh1t, it is more ceremonial than you think, otherwise this nutter would have been removed. In WW2, many thought Churchill some kind of great leader, in reality a skilled wordsmith, but his military strategizing seriously deficient, and the military chiefs had the job of basically only co-operating with what made sense, and eventually at war's end, not co-operating at all, as revealed by Operation Unthinkable. There is a limit to what you can do, outside of the concensus, in any democracy.

It is very easy to remove a prime minister. You can do it in a day. Almost impossible to remove a president. Would anything convince Republican senators to convict and remove a Republican president these days?Shocked

Gee this Trump rally in Georgia is a disaster. Very low energy, tired old material and people look like they are struggling to stay awake.

To be truthful we have it easy.  We have a government (both sides in fact) who went in fast hard and effectively - despite mistakes along the way.  With something new like this blighter is is something where people will try to take short cuts to ease the way and no short cuts could be taken here.

But we also see the USA from a distance.  Yes they are important to us - hense the reporting and viewing of things happening there.  But also being at a distance we get both a smaller and wider view of what is happening to the country.  We don't have to believe that the president wouldn't lie to you.  That he is there to serve the people - therefore is above santure etc.

We can see he is anything but looking after the people he should serve and that like many others he speaks with a forked tongue.  Why many in the USA can't see this.  Well Trump keeps reinforcing his greatness.  He tells them all is fine, this is going away.  It's not hard to fight.  He's got them on track.  They will be great again!  He tells them exactly what they want to hear.

Many people in government use that tactic.   He's not alone.  The USA was disillusioned.  It paved the way for Trump.  So maybe bit by bit common sense will claw its way back.  There is so much wrong with the whole world at the moment.  We all have to find new paths and ways forward.  They will also.  But how do you get this man out of the white house?  That's the biggest and most worrying of questiongs.

The American system of government came about through revolution . Their founding fathers only term of reference was the monarchies of Europe. They gave their brand new office of President the same powers as George lll basically . The president was an elected monarch . Over the years the Westminster system of government, has evolved and changed with thee monarch giving up all political power to the elected government but the monarch remaining head of state. The American system has stayed the same with the President both deferred to as head of state but also being the top politician. The concept of a monarchy is a ridiculous outdated anachronism of one BUT it does seem to work in a strange way. Respected Head of State not a politician is not that bad
