He’s only sent 3 horses to the races & all 3 have won.

Johnny Get Angry - VRC Derby at Flemington in Oct
My Squeeze Louise - 3yo maiden at Kyneton

All up 16 starts between then for 3 wins & 5 placings.

He’s now taken 4 different horses to the races & has won a race with every single one. Clap

A very recent maiden winner of his beat just one of about 11 at its debut over 1200m under another (closely associated) trainer.  And then wins over 1600m for Pagan five weeks later, at long odds it must be said so little question of it being "set up".

This bloke certainly can train, and just hope he continues to do solely so for himself and family.

The Aurie's Star Hcp used to be a starting point for Cup winners of the past. Will be interesting how this horse performs in the spring.

Good to see you adhering to the don't quote the post immediately above Jamal.

But seriously, are you really THAT thick?

I'm interested in djebels thoughts on this as well but I would have thought kicking off in something like the Lawrence would have made more sense, but I guess if Dennis is going to space his runs he could go from here to the Feehan on Sept 4th into the JRA Cup on Sept 24th.

If he were mine I'd be aiming to get him out beyond 2000m as quickly as possible however Dennis did win a Derby with him, owns and trains then horse so I'm happy to watch and learn.

If i refer to afros as being thick will that get scrubbed as well?

Why dont the mods edit afros post for derogatory remarks?

There's a difference between asking & stating is why!

Nothing wrong with Jamal's passion for racing at all, but it is painful how he quotes the post immediately above for a one line reply, despite mods and other posters repeatedly encouraging him to not do this for a LONG time.

Pagan gets answers on Johnny

The results of a scintigraphy scan have given trainer Denis Pagan the answers he was looking for after a below-par spring preparation from last year's Victoria Derby winner Johnny Get Angry.

The son of Tavistock has been sent to the spelling paddock for three months after finishing 22nd in the Melbourne Cup.

"He was very sore," Pagan said. "The reality is the scan showed he had about 15 or 16 sore spots.

"It's akin to a young footballer that is sore and not ready to play.

"He might have got sore again after Damien (Oliver) galloped him before the Cup, because he really galloped well at Breakfast with the Stars.

"He hadn't even turned four ... he was just like a young footballer who had played too many games.

"He'd passed all the tests with the Racing Victoria vets.

"He had all the tests and trotted up all the time and scans done, but it wasn't until you did the scintigraphy where the nuclear dye attaches to any warm spots."

International runners in the Melbourne Cup were required to undergo a full body scintigraphy at the expense of their connections two to six weeks prior to entering pre-export quarantine.

Meanwhile local and international runners had to a undergo a CT scan of their distal limbs.

"We will give him three months out and I'll be looking forward to when he comes back in without any pressures to get to the Melbourne Cup or anything and just take it as it comes," Pagan said.

"He probably should have been tipped out after the Turnbull.

"I know that's easy in retrospect but I'm glad that he didn't have to have any medical intervention in terms of surgery or any medication.

"He just needed to go out and allow himself to grow and mature.

"We finally got to the bottom of it because it was so frustrating.

"He wanted to please us and he kept on trying - but he wasn't right."

Pagan's assessment was frank, as always, when reflecting on saddling up a runner in the Melbourne Cup.

"Terribly embarrassed with what I did and the way he ran," he reflected. "But now I know why.

"It was a very expensive operation and as my father said, 'There is no fool like an old fool' and that's me.

"It's better to have tried and failed than to not have tried at all.

"The most important thing is I've still got a lovely horse and maybe he'll come again."

Having moved on several members of his team recently including My Squeeze Louise, Frankie Two Angels, Don't Rush Ruby and Let It Rip Reggie, Pagan has no shortage of young draft picks.

With Turn It Up Tommy sent for an eight-month spell after his spring campaign, Pagan's young team of staying types includes Back Me Up Benny (by Fiorente), Call On Me Valerie (Dundeel), Freddy Cut In (Almanzor), Georgie Get Mad (Australia), Normie No Show (Exosphere) and Wake Me Up Winston (Churchill).

Stunning Group 1 winner Johnny Get Angry has been given the all clear to return to work after a throat issue had threatened to prematurely end his career.

The four-year-old 2020 Victoria Derby winner had surgery three months ago and trainer Denis Pagan has revealed the gelding has been given a clean bill of health after a follow-up with the vet last Friday.

"The vet said he's all beautiful but the proof's still in the pudding, and you don't really know with these things until they actually race," Pagan said.

"I'm absolutely thrilled, it was a good day Friday when we got the news let me tell you."

Johnny Get Angry was sent for scans after a disappointing run in last year's Melbourne Cup, which revealed the horse had more than a dozen sore points.

"He had a lot of sore spots, and actually had a broken rib as well," Pagan said.

After three months in the paddock, a return to the races now looms for the son of Tavistock, with Pagan hopeful he can get back to his best.

"He'll go back into work in two weeks' time," Pagan said.

"I'm very confident in the guy who did it, so we'll take it from here.

"Hopefully he can get back to his best, fingers crossed."

Pagan is yet to map out a plan for Johnny Get Angry's highly anticipated return but won't be rushed into making a decision on exactly when we may see his stable star next.

"I'll just let him tell us when he's ready, when he's had a couple of trials and is ready to go to the races, we'll just take it from there," he said.

Johnny Get Angry has been retired and will be joining the Living Legends Under Saddle program.

Some details on the program below:

Legends Under Saddle

Over the last five years we have commenced riding our retired champions, as it provides a multitude of benefits for the horses, staff, students and visitors.

These include:

  • Additional activity and exercise for the horses
  • An opportunity for staff and volunteer professional development (we provide some dressage and show jumping coaching for our riders)
  • An opportunity for our industry placement students to gain a better understanding of the training and riding of horses. Not all of the students are riders, so the insights provided are beneficial. For those who are riders, it provides a wonderful experience to take the legends for a ride in the Woodlands Park.
  • Providing the public with an opportunity to see horses in action. Our metropolitan visitors are particularly interested as they do not often have the opportunity to see this.
  • Taking our horses to shows and events. Who Shot Thebarman, who raced in four Melbourne Cups and five Sydney Cups, always draws a crowd at events and often seeks photo opportunities.

Of course, not all our champions are suitable for riding for a range of reasons, however we endeavour to work with any horse that is willing.

Just trained the winner of the first at Werribee - Georgie Get Mad.

Probably a bunch of scrubbers behind him but won by panels.

4yo imported gelding by Australia, so you’d imagine him progressing through the grades over 2000m+ races over the next few months.
