Waterhouse says spring changes would be ‘madness’

Champion trainer Gai Waterhouse has launched a stinging attack on Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys, drawing a link between the man who has revamped the NSW racing calendar in recent years with moves to shift the Caulfield Cup carnival from October to late November.

An incensed Waterhouse described suggestions that Melbourne’s spring should be reconfigured as “madness” and blames the powerful NSW administrator, who is also the chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission.

Waterhouse also attacked Racing NSW creation the Golden Eagle, which launched at Rosehill last year on the same day as the VRC Derby, dubbing it the ‘Golden Seagull’.

A change of date for the Caulfield Cup is being considered because of a clash with the rescheduled AFL finals series and the faint hope that there may be a relaxing of protocols associated with COVID-19 to allow owners, members and racegoers the chance to attend the track.

“You could do it as a one-off but I’m totally against it. I think they have a very good race pattern that leads up to a grand final, which is what people are heading for, and that is the Melbourne Cup,” Waterhouse said. “The Caulfield Cup is a time-honoured race, first run more than 140 years ago. It’s stood the test of time and all of a sudden, on a whim, they want to change it.

“That’s great isn’t it. Why do they gotta (sic) move everything? How do you qualify for the Melbourne Cup?

“They moved the Mackinnon Stakes. Now it’s on the last day (of Cup Week moved from Derby Day). It used to be a qualifying race for the Melbourne Cup,” she said.

“Why do they want to move everything? All because Peter V’landys has put the ‘Golden Seagull’ on and everyone wants to frantically move things around.

“Peter V’landys never came on to this earth to change races. No one in Victoria should worry about moving races, but everyone shadow boxes now around what Peter V’landys has done.

“Let Sydney do what they’re doing, whatever they want to do and keep Melbourne doing what they do and they do it bloody well. I don’t think anyone does it better. But this changing around to offset the grand final and offset The Everest or the Golden Eagle, it’s no good.

“They’ll still do what they want to do. Committees should have their hands tied behind their backs. They are not there for long and they change the course of history.”

V’landys was unable to respond to calls from The Australian on Wednesday night.

The fourth running of The Everest, the nation’s richest race, is to be held at Randwick on October 17, which is Caulfield Cup Day. The second running of the Golden Eagle will be held at Rosehill on October 31 — again clashing with Victoria Derby Day.

A working party comprising executives from Racing Victoria and racing managers from the metropolitan clubs are working towards a decision on race dates before the middle of next month or sooner.

The Victoria Racing Club is steadfast in retaining their traditional dates built around the first Tuesday in November for Melbourne Cup week.

The Moonee Valley Racing Club, celebrating the 100th running of the Cox Plate this year, are hoping to race on October 24 during the midday-6pm slot but are in the hands of the AFL and whether they will play their grand final in the evening on the same day.

Bet her opinion changes when she gets one good enough for the golden eagle!

The possible changes in Victoria have nothing to do with NSW and vlandys. She is talking out of her .....

I can't follow Waterhouse's reasoning - it's addled.Wacko She's angry at V'Landys for putting on a big money Sydney race seems to be the gist of it.LOL

YES--    I don't think the V'Landy Product charges will help Racing or the NRL over time.       . That's what is funding his ego.

https://www.racing.com/news/2020-05-20/comment-time-right-to-consider-spring-rejig  -whether you agree with conclusions or not, I think a discussion is not unreasonable whereas Gai's comments are totally OTT.  I do not like everything Racing NSW has done in recent years but overall I think they have done a great job, especially in comparison to other racing authorities around the world.

Do you International ? Do you think financing a small number of elite races, at the expense of greater rake from punters, is a great job ? You obviously are not a punter ! These people will find that there is no privilege in being able to bet on high prizemoney racing, the privilege lies in being able to race for big prizemoney, financed by over-taxed punters. It won't last. You, and they, have got it all arse-about face.

LOL LOL Golden Seagull LOL LOL

Gai has got it nailed. This pinko commie bulldust over National programming is absolute tripe. The utopia of such a system would be travelling roadshow of a dozen horses in each of three categories.

It's a pity that the MRC members are completely powerless to remove their dysfunctional and corrupt leadership.

Actually I do.  I compare it to other countries. UK racing has a great product completely screwed by authorities bowing down to bookmakers back in the 60s with the result was a pathetic tote and so stake money is pathetic - and well before online betting; France with a few exceptions of tracks and odd race dates has no atmosphere at all - with a deteriorating financial position for many; US - which is riddled with drugs and cruel practices and is now a completely marginal sport; Germany - no coverage for years in mainstream media, so stake money is totally crap. So maybe you would be the genius that you could turn everything around for all parties, but in a comparison I think they do a pretty good job. But so sorry your opinion is the only one that counts

The prizemoney in Australia is absurdly high compared to the betting base. It appears gubmints have virtually surrendered their revenue stake from wagering, to disperse as prizemoney. A comparison of betting turnover Vs prizemoney distributions over the decades would prove it. The latter has increased markedly faster than the former.

How stupid can this one racing club get?

They trot out some asinine bulldust about the 'unique' circumstance created by the AFL prelims and GF, as if there's no other alternative. Not even, say, running the races on a Sunday.

Will this just hand Sydney better horses for races like the Golden Eagle, Metropolitan and the like? No competition from Melbourne, V'Landy's will be over the moon.

Sunday, Red Hare?

Too obvious!

It is the obvious solution I thought of as well but they probably think turnover would be affected. Syrely some co-operation between sports in these circumstances should have been obvious. AFL grand final on a Sunday would not affect interest in the slightest. and who cares if AFL and NRL grand final are on same day this year. Won't be crowds and you have AFL as normal at lunch time and NRL in evening as I think it has been for last few years or even at night.

The AFL GF will have to be a night game this year, and probably the next couple as well. TV money pays the players and the broadcasters can do better business on the global scale with a night time product. That's the only way they can patch up their end.

The Caulfield Cup could be run as a Thursday breakfast meeting and turnover wouldn't register a blip - as long as the race maintains a stake in the Melbourne Cup.

What a stupid race club the MRC are. You'd need your head read if you were a paying member.

Gai's opinion won't change and she doesn't need this race for her cv, she's won em all and she's. a multi.by being so successful, throw in her family ties there's a 100 years of knowledge in her head , she's very intelligent and at this time of her life self interest would be least of her worries, guiding the young bloke through is her job now , she's a traditionalist and that only comes with time and enjoying how it works , not a lot of thought has been given to these changes imo and there will be some emotive exchanges down the line before the end of this.

Carioca I think you need to re-read what she has said.

If she had taken to V'landys regarding the new Sydney races and then the MRC/Racing Vic regarding the Melb races then that would be OK as it is her opinion.

BUT she has confused the 2 issues and blamed V'landys for the change in Victorian dates. She is confused and I look forward to her explanation to the owners of Dawn Approach why they won't be racing in the Golden Eagle Big smile

Kavg, it appears to me these date changes for the CC and CGns. have been bought about by the changing and introduction of new races in Sydnet on the prime dates over the Melb. spring who are guilty themselves by not conferring with the AFL , these two states are wrecking these upcoming carnivals by not sitting down like sensible men and doing the Best for each other, the big loser will be racing with jockeys trying to figure out where to ride and diluted fields, Gai's opinion may appear to be muddled to some but if you read between the lines she is imo on the money .

The only reason the MRC is changing dates is so they do not clash with the AFL final series
