Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk 'shocked' by interim findings of inquiry into Queensland's state-run forensic testing labQueensland authorities are set to review every DNA sample connected to a major crime since early 2018, when the state's forensic laboratory changed its testing processes. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in June announced an inquiry to investigate operations at the Queensland Health Forensic and Scientific Services (QHFSS) lab, after Queensland police announced it was reviewing cases deemed to have "insufficient DNA for further processing". Retired judge Walter Sofronoff was appointed to head the inquiry and his interim findings were discussed at a cabinet meeting today and then released to the public. Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said the government would accept in full all three of the recommendations from the report. She said molecular biologist Professor Frank Gannon would be appointed to oversee re-testing of samples alongside police, the Department of Justice and the Attorney-General's office. Ms D'Ath said the situation was "extremely serious" and could lead to "the potential of miscarriage of justice". "We are not just correcting statements before the court, we are going to identify every sample that falls in to the priority two group that fell within the range that is prescribed," she said. "That work will be undertaken as matter of urgency. "But what we do know is even if there's one, just one case, one victim, one alleged perpetrator, where the DNA shows a connection, either partially or full, to someone involved in a crime, that we have a responsibility to act and provide that person with justice in whatever way we can." Earlier
today Ms Palaszczuk described interim findings of a commission of
inquiry into the state's forensic laboratory as "incredibly concerning"
and "shocking".......................cont'd ABC |

at the beginning, she had credibility. now, the level of arrogance is quite astounding. If they get the Olympics, will she hang around to bathe in its glory? Whatever happened to Australia, as a nation. It's all state politicking, scoring points and having the entourage rip up bills. She needs taking down a peg. |

Mander seemed to me a better prospect for the Qld opposition leader, but being a loyal deputy to Deb hasn't paid dividends.

Palaszczuk is the Steven Bradbury of politics. Last Labor member standing after they got obliterated in 2012 and then benefited from a disastrous Newman government. Amazing to think that she is going to be a 10+ year premier. |

that sell-off of the port of Darwin could well come back to bite Australia's butt.

MP George Christensen slams Annastacia Palaszczuk over leasing of Keswick Island to China companyAn island has become a hellscape for residents after it was leased to a Chinese company, with security monitoring locals’ every move. North Queensland MP George Christensen has slammed premier Annastacia Palaszczuk over her government’s leasing of Keswick Island to a Chinese company that is making life miserable for residents. Chinese development group China Bloom, which secured a 99-year lease on the island in 2019, has closed access to Keswick Island beaches, set up fences to prevent access to national parkland and banned short term accommodation and rentals on the island. The dire situation has prompted a Facebook group to be established called ‘Keswick Island Reclaim Aussies Rights’ (sic) and it has almost 9000 members. peaking on 2GB, Federal member for Dawson, Mr Christensen, described the nightmarish scenes on the island from a recent visit. “The first thing I noticed was the presence of a security guard peeping through the bushes at what we were doing,” Mr Christensen told Ben Fordham. “Residents tell me this is not uncommon; security guards constantly ask about their comings and goings and (even) drive past their houses at all hours of the day and night. “It’s very, very intimidating and not something you‘d expect in modern Australia to have a privately owned security firm checking on what you’re doing all the time.” The Qld government had an Australian consortium interested in leasing the island in 2019 but handed it over to China Bloom instead. “In 2019 when they approved the transfer of the lease to China Bloom there was an Australian consortium the state government could have approved it going it to, but they didn’t, so it went to this foreign company,” Mr Christensen said. “All we’ve seen is this mayhem since; causing issues with the residents.”The Keswick Island Progress Association and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority also met recently to discuss reports of severe environmental damage. The damage includes claims a turtle nest was destroyed because of beach grading and land clearing to make way for a new boat and trailer parking area as well as coral “smothered in sediment”. Mr Christensen said when residents contacted the state government they were told to engage a lawyer. He had a frank message for Ms Palaszczuk. “What I want to say to Annastacia is, ‘Can you stick up for these Queenslanders, rather than a foreign owned company?’ “It’s pretty simple stuff; if you can't get free and simple access to the island, there is a very big problem.” Mr Christensen said he would continue to lobby the state government and China Bloom for Keswick Island residents. “The Palaszczuk government onsold a 99-year lease to the China Bloom company,” he said recently. “The problem’s been of the state government’s own making in terms of approving the sale to a Chinese company”. |

It is now clear that the state election was a COVID referendum, and the LNP never stood a chance, after a few popped up in support of early border opening, no doubt at the behest of tourism interests. The subsequent Melbourne fiasco, showed that an influx of winter visitors from the south, would have created major problems with viral spread. The big set against the LNP in areas where older retirees are a big part of the demographic, shows that the closed border is what they wanted. Places like Bribie Island, which is wall-to-wall retirees, voted Labor.

Talk that Mander might be passed over, as being too much involved in the Frecklington fiasco, I think Mander their best chance, anyone else is cannon fodder for Anastacia

It depends on what prevails at the time, but I always remember a great-aunt of mine telling me she only voted against the ALP, once, and that was in the Depression ! The hip pocket is a big factor.

A strange election where the ultra right (ONP, PUP) polled very poorly, and the left (Greens) polled very strongly.

Deb was hopeless . Hid longer than Biden . No idea , and did nothing to get on board the Virus train.
LNP Politics is better without her. She needs to get out and see the world. Australians are spooked and in fear , The short term fame of destroying the economy for a winter flu (over reaction), has those "shut down" fools getting all the support. ( for the short term ) . Scomo's lot will lose the next Federal election, because the Public will have woken to the fact they were misled. The pockets will be hurting , so bye bye LNP. Queensland will be about 3rd world standard by then and the LNP will Pay the price . |

Frecklington stands down as leader. I was surprised that she said she was staying on, on Saturday, it is not her decision to take, ultimately. She says it was her decision, to resign, after reflection, but I would think the tap on the shoulder came. Mander I feel, will do a lot better.

Deb ought be enraged by the organizational apparatchiks that sabotaged here, either they go, or both her and they go, they cannot continue to co-exist.

All about self interest at the time of an election.
The Majority are well suited by the conditions the Virus has created. Millions getting big dollars to stay home , No rental evictions or loan foreclosures ... The Country being destroyed and put into a financial quagmire , WHO CARES . When the facts have to be faced , just elect another Government and away we go again . AUSTRALIA's Handling of this virus set back, has been shocking. We will pay for it for generations . |

I think they need to clean out the organizational wing, rather than the parliamentary, the policy of directing preferences to the Greens, looking extremely dumb.
