With the good run of Cherry Tortoni yesterday, I was thinking about where this guy was this autumn.  Only got narrowly beaten by CT in the MV Vase in the Spring before spelling.

Just read Trav Noonan’s ‘likely fields’ article for next weekend & he’s got Khoekhoe as a potentially returning in the Autumn Classic over 1800m.

Sounds like a nice starting point for a colt en route to an AJC Derby &/or SA Derby.

Bred to go about 1400m so it appears a matter of training methods v pedigree.  Really interesting stuff in prospect.  Smile

This was from a few weeks ago : (note he didn't jump out, going straight into Saturday fresh)

Cumani said Khoekhoe's first public appearance in 2021 would either be in a jumpout at Burrumbeet in late January or in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield in mid February.

The colt's ultimate aim is the ATC Derby (2400m) in Sydney, although Cumani said there were other options in Adelaide and Brisbane if things didn't go to plan in the early part of his campaign.

"We're going to start to build him up now and our first target will probably be a jumpout at Burrumbeet on the 25th of January or we'll go straight to the races," he said.

"A race like the Autumn Classic, the Group 2 over 1800m at Caulfield, would be a nice first-up target.

"At the moment, we're on a path to the Derby in Sydney but if he doesn't look like he's quite good enough or he doesn't fire in that first-up run then we can divert and maybe look to Adelaide.

"But I think he's a quality horse and I want to aim him at the best races and to me, that's the Autumn Classic followed by the Rosehill Guineas and then the Derby in Sydney."

Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing

Matt Cumani has stuck to the plan.

1st up at 1800m in the Autumn Classic.  Fred Kersley Jr does ride for the stable a lot but has lost the ride to Kerrin McEvoy.

Fred Kersley was taken to hospital on Sunday morning with what turned out to be a burst ulcer lodged in his duodenal, rupturing the duodenal.

Operation was successful and he hopes to be back riding early March

Was also a nice return showing from this guy.  Heard Matt Cumani pre-race say that he’s fit enough to win but the 1800m may be a little short for him.

That augurs well heading into the various state Derbies ahead this autumn & winter.

Nice return Lord.

I still have a reservation about the 3yo group at longer than 2000m. I think that was shown up with the fact that Parure and Butter Chicken quinellaed the race and beat the males well.

This guy will improve and be competitive. I am sensing Baker is aiming Aegon at the Doncaster, and that is the way he goes, then Khoekhoe is in the mix.

I’m happy to stick with this guy each way in the Derby today.

Huge run 2nd up in the Rosehill Guineas, really toughed it out & only tired late.  Fitter for that run & have faith in Matt Cumani having him ready to tackle to 2400m.

Whilst no collect for me, it was a good effort finishing just behind the placegetters in 5th.

Apparently going to the Frank Packer Plate over 2000m in 2 weeks, as his stepping stone to the SA Derby 2500m.

On his last two Lord, do you think he is a genuine 2400m horse?

I thought when he angled out at the top of the straight he had not spent a penny and he would cruise to win the derby.

I am not sure what to make of him, because he did the same thing in the Guineas, he looked the winner when he went past the leader at the top of the straight.

Maybe he is a horse who needs to get going from the six hundred meter mark as he can obviously keep going in the last 200m but he needs to grab a break on his opponents before the turn.

Even Williams said when he got off, he thought the way he traveled into the straight, that when he let him go he would go on and win, but he could not offer a reason why he did not.

Very strange horse. Maybe having that run, and his Frank packer run and then the travel back to Adelaide will get him fully fit, and maybe that will be the key.

Realize Khoekhoe doesn't know it, however he's not bred to run anywhere near a strong 2400m in Group company.  But am sure Matt Cumani will find a decent race or two for him this prep and/or next.

I could hardly believe the rider fought him as long as he did................then I saw it was Williams! The horse clearly can't cope with the lack of tempo that staying races necessitate, at this stage of his career anyway.
Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Hard horse to work out.

His first 3 runs this time were super in better grade, but his next 2 in weaker grade have been plain.

Matt Cumani will have to go back to the drawing board to get this guy back winning again.

Liked his first up effort over 1200m a few weeks ago.  Worth an each way ticket today in R9 at Caulfield over 1400m.

Dissappointing horse but R8 at Sandown today is the weakest race he’s contested for a while.

Can’t resist a little nibble at 12/1.

I should be well & truly done with this horse.  But with Kayla Crowther doing the riding & up to 1800m maybe just one last time in R3 at Morphettville.

Enigmatic is an understatement for this guy.

I’ve been disappointed several times backing him in the past.  He’s now won without me at 40/1 & 8/1 this campaign Dead

Just found one better in the Mt Gambier Cup. Surely he will win one of these races one day.
