Will the race clubs run meetings in front of empty stands? Will horses need stopped from travelling interstate for racing? Sounds like the old EI days coming back where horses will only be racing on their home tracks. Numbers for online auctions are rising dramatically as people cash out.

RV to monitor Coronavirus situationRacing Victoria will continue to monitor the state's Coronavirus situation after the World Health Organisation officially declared it a pandemic on Thursday. But there are currently no plans to abandon race meetings or hold them behind closed doors. Racing.com understands RV is keeping in close contact with the state government and is working towards a contingency plan if one needs to be rolled out. Caulfield will host its All-Star Mile race day on Saturday with thousands of people expected to attend, while there is Group 1 racing at The Valley the following Friday (March 20) and the Mornington Cup on March 21. The Warrnambool May Racing Carnival in early May is also highly attended over the three days. "We are keeping abreast of the changes and the current advice that is coming from Federal and State Governments and health authorities. They're the key driver of this, they're the key people with all the relevant information and we'll respond to that," RV chief executive Giles Thompson told RSN927. "At the moment, the advice is that it is OK for mass gatherings such as the ones we'll have this weekend and we're going ahead fully expecting them to be well attended. If that advice changes, then we will change how we race. "My view at this point, and what we're planning for, is that if it gets to the point where mass gatherings are not allowed then we will continue to race behind closed doors without audiences. "We believe that we can, we believe that the participants want to and they need the opportunities, and we believe as well that, through our media channels, we'll get a strong audience for that." Thompson admitted there would be challenges if racing continued through a Coronavirus outbreak in Victoria. "The real challenge at that point will be can we get the staff to work at those events and can the participants attend and that is something that we'll have to try and work around if it gets to that point," he said. "I think we're a fair way from that point. I note the AFL is saying they won't go behind closed doors until Round 5, which is about four or five weeks away. "We'll continue to race as long as we can and that's what the contingency is that we're working towards." http://www.racing.com/news/2020-03-12/news-rv-to-monitor-coronavirus-situation |

Really how important is sport when the country is facing a recession and lives of vulnerable elderly people are at risk ? |

It isn't sport Bob, it's an industry which is a huge employer both directly and in secondary employment terms and thus a significant contributor to the economy.Just like AFL and NRL etc.
So any serious curtailment to these industries isn't a good thing for the individuals affected let alone the Australian economy at large.

Exactly. It's like if the tourism industry hits the wall, you're not sad that people aren't taking holidays, but that thousands will no longer have work from the lost tourist $.

Valley racing still on tonight last time l looked but MRC sent text to members no go tomorrow.
Not really worth going tonight though in case there's a last minute change and you get turned away at the gate bit of a gloomy night weather-wise anyway ... .....it's all becoming very interesting well intriguing looks like a move must be made soon instead of the same old ... let's see who's got the footwork

It’s ridiculous. I face more risk every day and night on my trip to/from the cbd on crowded public transport.

EI outbreak. That was the end of life as we know it. But it wasnt. Things went ass up for awhile, and some lost money, and some horses were never the same again. But the world didnt end. Life went on. And it will again. |

Well, I can can tell you this much for nothing, if you were at Flemington last week (Newmarket/Aus Cup), you ought to pop in and get yourself tested - symptoms or otherwise.
I've been virtually nowhere since Christmas, but I was there & now I'm crook. I'll be heading to the doc for a test and if I haven't got it, I'll go hee.

Think of it like a really bad typhoon or like the floods in Brisbane a few years ago. It will affect everyone and mess things up for a good bit of time. The goal is to try to keep it from killing too many people (self-isolate vs. evacuate for flooding) and to mitigate the damage where possible. AFL and NRL can and have canceled games without a second thought when a cyclone or floods are coming -- stopping the spread of deadly contagion doesn't have the flashy satellite images of Yasi but the effect on industry is the same. Racing/sport in general is no better or worse prepared than any other industry in this regard.

I flew over from Adelaide & was at Flemington for Australia Cup/Newmarket last week. Spent lots of the day in the public stand opposite the winning post - no symptoms here. |
