Well it’s almost that time of the year when the jumpers get back into swing. The Victorian season starts at the Bool on 12th March & South Aust kick off at Strathalbyn on 25th March. The Kiwis season starts next month.

Theres been really good numbers turning out at the 3 jumps trials days in the past few weeks. Some of the big guns have already trialled, including Zed Em, Killarney Kid, Bit of a Lad, Police Camp & Ablaze.

Patrick Payne, Eric Musgrove, Ciaron Maher have all been assembling strong teams. Good to see David Hayes with a few as well, with Sin To Win & Thunder Road being educated. And of course Gai Waterhouse is back with a few too, including former Geelong Cup winner Runaway.

Gerry Ryan has also purchased a few imports off Lloyd Williams - Exemplar & Sir Isaac Newton. Will be interesting to see how they shape up as hurdlers.

Really looking forward another great season ahead

Back today at the Bool. Early jumps races are tough betting propositions but will have a go anyway.

R2 - Peak Hill : handy on the flat in the NSW northern rivers area. Now with Eric Musgrove. Bred to stay out 3200m

R4 - Newbury : ran a cracker in the Brierly over this course & distance last year, so hoping he hits form early this season

fact gathered from trial days is we have enough jumpers to make up a full meeting of “national hunt” horses. Why not at least try to get regular jump meeting over late autumn/winter to cater for these horses. Just a suggestion, but how about 3 hurdle races of slightly different distances, 2 steeples again of differing distances, then 2 old jumpers flats for hunt horses in progress and only for jumps jockeys with weights allotted accordingly and young horses whose last throw at racing stumps could be jumping.
If England and Ireland can run jumpers in our cups, why cannot we ground our potential stayers similarly? Just saying.

The jockey on Kapour was absolutely atrocious.

He was rough on the horses head, he was rough when he went for the stick,

Hands and heels and he wins that.

Was that Bill Gleesons first ride in a race ?

I take it he is not European.

There was zero polish in that ride but utterly forgivable if his first ride ?

I’d never heard of Bill Gleeson either. Would be interested if anyone knows his story.

The other new ‘old’ face in the jumps ranks this year is Luke Williams. He’s a 46yo who made a comeback to flat riding a few years ago after lengthy drug problems. He did ride over jumps in Tassie back in the 1990’s. Would be great if he can boot a winner home over the jumps this season.

Looks like great card of jumps racing at Pakenham today. Some fascinating newcomers with the ex-Lloyd pair of Sir Isaac Newton & Exempar making their debuts in the early hurdle races, as a nice entree to the star studded open hurdle & steeplechase.

R1 - My Kings Counsel : former NSW stayer who caught my eye last start at Stawell running a race at 50/1 over 2700m. In a good jumping stable with Kath & Craig Darden.

R2 - Exemplar : Irish horse who was competitive in metro class in the early part of last Spring. If he can jump, he wins.

R3 - Northern Voyage : Gai’s got him going very well & big weight advantage over Bit of A Lad

R4 - Markwood : bit of a speculator here, as the top 2 are good established jumpers, but this Kiwi can improve sharply today at big odds.

R5 - no bet just enjoy the big showdown between Zed Em vs Ablaze, the reigning Champ against the rising star.

Good luck to all

That's interesting as made a few faulty jumps before the last (Sir Isaac Newton that is) without going into a lot of detail.

Jumps racing's gone a long way to keeping the horses safe while still remaining quite spectacular as it was yesterday. So the point here would be to see how a top rider especially on a hot Fave could be given more avenues as the pressure would've certainly been on from a long way out as far as what options to take.

Anyway lots would know more about Jumps than me for sure just thought that horse good as never even saw a jump as he travelled yesterday.

I think Flying Agent can win the novice hurdle at Sandown today at good odds. Showed promise last winter, tidy run when resuming earlier this month & the heavy will hold no fear for this son of Raise the Flag.

As for the 2 features, they’re pretty difficult to pick. I’ll probably go with Slowpoke Rodriguez in the steeple. Be nice to see him win a big race and this 3800-4200m distance range I think is right in his wheelhouse. Doesn’t quite get those marathon trips.

Well I had a very nice collect with Flying Agent & hes definately one to keep following over the winter. Strong stayer, jumps cleanly & likes the wet.

As for Slowpoke Rodriquez, he showed no zest at all in the straight. Back to back lacklustre performance is rare for him, so not sure what Patrick Payne can do to spark him back into form.

I thought the Kiwi chaser Shamal was the one to follow come the longer events like the Crisp & GN steeplechase’s.   Great to see old Tony Rosolini’s horse in Undergroundfighter stick on for 3rd today.
