Djokovic short as per usual - $2.25

Nadal needs someone to take out Djokovic for him to win the event. Djokovic has won the last 19 sets in a row against Nadal on hard courts.

I'd say Medvedev is the only one who could beat Djokovic - if he is at the top of his game and Djokovic a little bit off.

I am worried if they will even have the tournament, the way the qualifiers are shaping up.

Might have to switch the event to courts in Ballarat or Albury

Well Goulburn is out as well Gay, as we have smoke from fires from the south, north and east.

Djoker has did enough last week to show he is beatable. Expect him to raise his level in Melbourne though which makes things tougher. There are more chances this year for sure. More than just Medvedev.

Sam Stosur did us proud - a long time ago.  One wonders why she persists.

She made a million Yankee dollars in 2019.

This is almost certainly she makes a Slam without qualifying or receives an Australian Open wildcard.

Yes there's a bit of cash around however she must be a committed person given she won about two of countless first round appearances last year and has gradually slipped from 4 to about 100 in the rankings.

Her record last year was much better than that. But yes, reality is she’s 35 so no surprise to see her drop down the rankings and she must be close to the end. The fact remains though, why wouldn’t she still play singles? There is very little prizemoney in the doubles. She will need to make the semis of the women’s doubles before she wins more than she did last night. And the doubles doesn’t even start until later in the week. Why would she want to sit around all week waiting when she can have a $90k barrier trial last night.

SC, I know the Australian Open is one of the four grand slams, but in the last two days you have slammed "Aussie Sam", and now got stuck into Maria Sharapova for both failing in their first round matches. Who are you next lining up to cop a spray ? For some reason you went 'light" on Jelena Dokic and her Jenny Craig advertisement, did her father have "something" on you ?

W-T-F Dokic?

Sam is a great person, but has lost her last five first round matches at the Australian Open. On today's money terms she would've won $450,000 without winning an effing match.  She earned $1.1m last year, good on her, but over $800,000 courtesy of doubles wins particularly in the Australian Open and a huge China doubles success.

Sharapova won tournaments courtesy of a banned drug, was properly disqualified, and has been a shadow of her former self, grunts and all, ever since.  Doesn't that send you a message?  Aren't unhappy to see her go and why should I be?

Cheers.

You've got it 1/2 wrong again Bob, probably because you just read the headline, or because you can't abide Greenpeace, or because you're p1ssed that Extinction Rebellion has had a significant presence at the Open without annoying anyone but old right wing climate denying farts.

What was said, in fact, is that "Greenpeace has sent an open invitation to the world to attend what it’s describing as the “last Australian Open” before climate change alters the “beloved summer of sport”.

Hardly armageddon stuff, because many are suggesting that holding the Open in January is a lost cause due to extreme heat if nothing else.  Along with other sporting events over the same time frame.

Sorry Bob, a very ordinary beat up.

Greenpeace, because of summer heat, are predicting the demise of the Australian Open tennis. What will they come up with next ? .. the Boxing Day Test, the local bowls tournament, the under 14's marbles contest.

My 12 year old nephew, who recently was given a new Tom Bowler for Christmas will be very upset as he had targeted the 2021 under 14's marble contest.Wink

Boob, what don't you understand about the "last Australian Open” before climate change alters the “beloved summer of sport”.

Nowhere did it predict the end of the Australian Open, rather that the event needs to be moved to a less stressful player/audience time of the year.

I can't see where else it could move to. The tennis calendar is overcrowded. Indian Wells starts early March, then Miami Open in April, then clay season, and on and on it goes.

Serena sounds like she's about to retire. That would be a shame as I'm enjoying her Sisyphean task of equalling then beating our Margaret's record - getting to the finals then getting smashed.

I refuse to use her name, but gee I was glad to see, Miss Cheater, get her papers to p@#s off back to Florida.

Hopefully her bankability drops over the next twelve months so we do not have to have her taking up a spot on past glories, which are tainted.

Good riddance and please retire sooner than later.

Osaka is playing terrible - horrific unforced error rate. Crikey, Barty could win this thing.

Where is the woman who won the US Open last year? Andrea something. Is she even in the tournament?
