With horses winning at Caulfield, Moonee Valley, Geelong and on derby Day either getting automatic entry or weight penalties it is more like 34 or 35.

I know we go through this every year, but seriously some of those horses above him are $1001.00 or more.

Although vulnerable to getting leapfrogged over the next few weeks, the mighty Carif has edged closer to a Melb Cup start.

Now up to 28th after the 3rd declarations today.

Looks like the ATC St Leger on Saturday is his next assignment but with that being SW+P even a win won’t attract a weight penalty yo help his cause.

Up to 27th now, natural attrition means he's a good chance of grabbing a start, especially considering some currently above him like Quick Thinker and Delphi may not even accept now.

He was ok yesterday, probably expected a little better performance from him.  That said he was only 3rd up & does generally improve the deeper he gets into a prep.

He’ll probably be an also-ran in the Melb Cup, but still love to see him get in the field.  He’s a beautiful looking horse & just the nostalgia links to Bart Cummings in his breeding & racing colours will make me cheer for him anyway.

He's capable of running top half in the Cup, especially in a down year like this one which means a collect of $160k, so why not?

A defence of his Sandown Cup or dropping back to the WFA Zipping after that I would imagine.

Quick Thinker and Duais are confirmed non-acceptors, so is up to at least 25th now.

He probably needs 2 or 3 more to fall away to be considered safe, there is a few ahead of him that could come out for form reasons such as Explosive Jack, Dawn Patrol and King of Leogrance but I guess it's a wait and see with them.

Is the Derby still ballot exempt? The current favourite for that race is amongst the Cup nominations.

Jamal, if you quote the above post again it'll be removed. I'm sick of telling you Angry

Jamal, whilst the VRC Derby isn’t ballot exempt, Forgot You has paid up for the Melb Cup entries so far.

If he wins or runs a place in the VRC Derby he’ll pass the Ballot Clause & leapfrog a lot of horses up the Order of entry

He has to also contend with horses behind him winning the Geelong Cup, Moonee Valley Cup and Lexus and gaining a penalty to move past him.

He did his trick again yesterday of surging at the top of the straight and then waiting.

I think his form in Melbourne is far superior to his clockwise form, I think he is better on a dry track, and he needs the 3200m to perform at his best.

If he makes the field, and he gets a dry track, and he can draw a gate to do no work early he will be strong at the end of the 3200m.

Not a winning hope but he could scramble into a top six spot.

He's now 23rd in the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup but surely some like Johnny Get Angry, Explosive Jack and Knights Order will come out as they are nowhere near the form needed to win a Melbourne Cup, so maybe he won't even need to run this week.

Speaking of So You Think's - I wouldn't wouldn't surprised if GOOD IDEA snuck into the Cup with the current rate of attrition. Another one in Dato's colours from one of their G1 mares FAINT PERFUME.

I don't think he can Jamal, but I've had a little bit on him because I'd rather he lose with mine on him than win without it.

Unlike you I prefer to light a candle rather than curse the darkness.

I have a little bit on him as well but that was months ago. I got odds at 200/1. Happy to email you the evidence tooof the bet. It was a "cup of coffee" bet. Hopefully (if he makes field) he can run past a few in the race. The trip shouldn't be a problem.

Was ridden too far back, had no chance to run on well. Having said that, does Snowden pull him out of the Melbourne Cup? Or do they press on?

I wonder what's happened? Showed promise without winning a few years ago, hardly wins actually. Maybe at the end of the day just not good enough? Snowmen doesn't really train many stayers either.

The problem with this horse Jamal is the Cummings polish and breeding. Just not good enough. Typical Australian stayer.
