Gold Coast races yesterday. $2.20 fav went off in barriers. Jockey flew out the back, horse released from barriers and given 5 second check. No trotting up, Passed fit by vet (haha) back in gates, and the runs last.
Stewards report says The start was further delayed when JADENTOM became fractious in the barriers, was removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

Very interesting to see the list of attendee's at yesterday's gabfest re trainers and QRIC........airing of grievances etc.......I bet you could cut the air with a knife......it got a bit heated....I bet it did, I've been to a few trainers meetings with Barnett and Parnell, they were beige fests......now being honest they need someone like Dion Villella from RVL flying squad to perch outside some licensed premises early morn and go in all guns blazing....but they haven't got the money.......cheats need to be caught in the act, supposition and innuendo don't cut it.......go full on, Raceday, quick morning, slow morning, any morning.....just do it...be seen to do it, it's not effen rocket science, they aren't that clever .......just clued to whats going down.......

A few raids here & there shouldn’t cost too much... would help a lot.

And could they keep the horses back a couple of hours after the race for further bicarb testing?

A start would be, forget prizemoney increases, invest in new testing technologies and science, the rumours of a synthetic EPO are no secret, apparently there is a LAB in France that has discovered a test for this, the latest scandal to hit the USA with the alleged positives with the Baffert stable should spark some interest....you would think? Raceday testing is paramount and subsequent mandatory stand downs should people be 'caught in the act' so to speak.......this mouthing off that we can't do much about the penalty appeals and QCAT etc........where's the opposition, the LNP in all of this? they should be going at this like a dog on a bone......but they are useless, if it keeps going the way it is, no one will bet up here.....transparency and good governance, that breeds respect.......when that happens up here, I'll race my horses here, I'm not hopeful that will happen, it's QLD and we are genetically rooted.

And it goes on.

Queensland Police have executed search warrants in Toowoomba on Tuesday in relation to a current investigation regarding alleged fraudulent practices by people involved in the racing industry.

In response to questions from Racenet, Queensland Police media provided the following statement:

"Today investigators from the Major and Organised Crime Squad (Rural) executed search warrants at separate premises and a residence in Toowoomba in relation to a current investigation of alleged fraudulent practices by persons (based in Toowoomba) involved in the thoroughbred racing industry.

"A number of items relevant to this investigation were seized and are subject to further analysis.

"At this time, no persons have been arrested as a result of today’s actions.

"No further information can provided as the investigation is ongoing."

And !!!!!!!!

Headbutt victim Larry Cassidy says this week’s decision to grant Luke Tarrant a stay of proceedings shows how broken the appeals system is in Queensland.

Controversial jockey Tarrant was disqualified for six months after pleading guilty to headbutting and verbally abusing Cassidy at Doomben on April 22.

As well as the seriousness of the physical incident, stewards took into account the breach of the COVID-19 social protocols and the potential for Tarrant’s actions to have an adverse effect on the racing industry.

It was the latest disqualification or suspension for Tarrant who had been making a success of a riding comeback after facing criminal drug-related charges.

Tarrant subsequently lodged an appeal against the heabutt penalty and it ended up at the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) where the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission objected to a stay of proceedings.

But Tarrant’s ban was stayed until the outcome of his QCAT appeal and subject to him filing additional material with QCAT by 22 June 2020.

Cassidy did not want to comment about the specifics of the case but insisted Tarrant getting a stay was another example of a flawed appeals system in Queensland.

“Realistically, it just brings home how broken the whole appeals system is,” Cassidy told Racenet.

“The appeals system, for a person to assault someone, and then be able to ride, it would not happen anywhere else, they would not be allowed back at work.

“Obviously QRIC’s hands are tied because of the legislation and it’s about time the government did something about this.”

The appeals system in Queensland was one of the frustrations that a bevy of trainers spoke out about to Racenet in a wide-ranging piece last month.

The Queensland appeals system firstly involves an internal review with the original decision of stewards almost always being rubber-stamped.

But then appeals progress to QCAT which had a habit of granting stays – and then matters in some cases are not finalised for many months or even years due to the clogged system.

Vastly experienced trainer Kelly Schweidahad this to say last month about the appeals system:

“They said we would be the envy of all the states - they’re kidding, the only ones who would say that are the jockeys, who are the envy of other states because of our 'anything goes' situation,” Schweida said.

“In my 48 years in racing, this is the most ridiculous system I have ever seen.

“A jockey told me about a month ago he had five riding suspensions in the wind. “There is no deterrent whatsoever for a jockey to give everyone a fair go.”

Meanwhile, Cassidy returns to riding at Ipswich on Wednesday where he has three rides.

He has been recovering from an ankle injury which forced him to miss the Stradbroke Handicap ride on Godolphin galloper Ranier.

* Racenet has turned comments off on this story as the Tarrant case is ongoing *

Father and daughter duo dominating in Qld

There are not so many smiles at the Sears place right now

This morning’s coordinated police raids on the Toowoomba home, Clifford Park stables and Charlton pre-training property of trainers Tony and Maddy Sears has sent shockwaves through the Queensland racing industry.

Not because the raids were a surprise – Blind Freddie could see that coming after the recent uproar by certain ‘lily-white’ Brisbane trainers that lead to the widely publicised meeting at Eagle Farm with the QRIC – but because they were conducted not by Stewards of the QRIC Integrity Investigation Team, but rather by up to 12 armed police rumoured to be a mixture of local and federal cops working on what appears to be a joint taskforce investigation.

At this stage we are unable to confirm or deny the involvement of the Feds, but there is strong mail coming through suggesting that any possible Commonwealth Police involvement is inextricably linked to the wholesale race fixing and doping arrests across America earlier this years that sent ripples around the world.

Some sources suggest that the FBI phone taps and raids uncovered evidence of cross-Pacific links between the dopers, including a number of Australian purchases of many of the unregistered and illegal substances being manufactured and sold by crooked pharmacists and vets in the United States, including the near 50 arrested and charged by the US Federal authorities during their investigations. This information of course was passed on to and shared with the Australian Federal Police, who are believed to have been, and still be, conducted covert investigations and surveillance operations on the local buyers, particularly in the NSW and Victorian harness racing industries.

Whether this broader investigation is related to today’s raids at Toowoomba is merely conjecture at this stage, however what we do know at this is stage is this.

  • 8 armed plain clothes police executed search warrants on the home and stables of co-trainers Tony and Maddysen Sears
  • A large quantity of items were seized included phones, computers, files and what are believed to be surveillance cameras and recordings
  • A further 3-4 police officers executed a raid on a property linked to the Sears at Charlton, about a half hour north-west of Toowoomba
  • No arrests have been made at this stage
  • The raids DID NOT relate in any way to Ben or Mark Currie, and were not conducted at the Currie’s homes or stables (just to put that false rumour presently spreading to bed)

There is very strong mail that this police operation was neither the first nor last that will be conducted by police in the racing industry, with hot whispers that the next mass visits made by officers will be to a much higher profile father and child training combination based approximately 130km to the South-East of the Downs.

Watch this space.

Mass Exodus From the Toby and Trent Edmonds Stable Suggests That All is Not Well in Paradise

Toby and Trent Edmonds to target Sydney features

Usually when a trainer wins Queensland’s biggest Group 1 race the Stradbroke Handicap, and trains the winner of another Group 2 the Magic Millions Roses the next week, owners start flooding through their doors, but Trent and Toby Edmonds amazing run of feature race success appears to have had the opposite effect, with large scale owners removing their horses from the stable in droves.

Leading owners AQUIS and Mark Sowerby, the disgraced former businessman and one-time thoroughbred representative on the Racing Board who is linked with Blue Sky Bloodstock, have reportedly moved, or an in the process of moving, and large number of horses from the Edmonds stable, for reasons at the moment unstated, if not unknown.

It has become common knowledge over the past 24 hours that star juvenile Wisdom of Water has been transferred to the Mick Price and stable in Melbourne, but what is less known is that over the past week Sowerby has progressively been removing his large number of horses from the Edmonds barn and transferring them to other trainers, in particular to the stables of little known Northern NSW trainer Edward O’Rourke, a young horseman who came to prominence by virtue of a short-lived partnership with Michael Freedman, and is now training on the Murwillimbah track currently prepared by the disappearing man Mick Goodie.

The reasons for the mass exodus from the Edmonds stable of horses owned by well-connected leading Queensland racing identities is unknown at this stage, but the cynics around the tracks are suggesting that the Fungs and Sowerby may know something that others at this stage don’t, and that some highly explosive news may soon be about to hit the headlines.

All we can say at this stage is that we have been suggesting certain things in our articles for weeks, and that wethinks that when we published our exclusive story about the mass-scale easrly morning QRIC visit paid to the Edmonds Gold Coast stable a fortnight ago, Trent Edmonds did protesteth just a tad too much.

As always, watch this space.

History suggests that a LNP government is most unlikely to improve the situation.  Quite the reverse in point of fact.

Not that any Government of any persuasion can be held significantly responsible for a failure of Racing authorities to get it right.

Do not disagree SC, but just saying there needs to be a clean out. Today, we have a positive to Ice from a John O’Shea horse from this time last year. He was stabled at the Gold Coast. Was it one of the stables who are having a hot run of form? Seems that the stewards are totally inept at anything except giving careless riding reprimands. OuchOuch

Look, I agree, but we have to do something, Hinchcliffe is useless, a man way out of his depth, the incoming wont be any better, but the hope is, he will accept the right council.....how does it go? If you surround yourself with the best people, they bring out the best in you.......fingers crossed, because we will end up like NZ if nothing changes.

13 Queensland trainers charged after statewide investigation

Ben Dorries

There is major breaking news in Queensland racing with 13 trainers charged by stewards for allegedly procuring substances or preparations after a statewide investigation.

There has also been a jockey and a stablehand charged in relation to the matter - bringing the number of Queensland participants charged on Wednesday by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission to 15.

Those charged are trainers Darryl Hansen, John Zielke, Jared Wehlow, Ricky Vale, Benjamin Williams, Christopher Tapiolas, Ian Shaw, Toni Schofield, Steven Royes, Kevin Miller, Darryl Gardiner, Kristy Best, and Trinity Bannon as well as stablehand Andrew Minton and jockey Mark Barnham.

Of the trainers charged, 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic winning trainer Hansen (who won the MM with Le Chef) probably has the biggest profile in racing.

"The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) has today charged 13 thoroughbred trainers, one stable hand and one jockey from around the state with allegedly procuring substances or preparations in breach of the applicable legislation," a QRIC statement said.

"The alleged breaches are as a result of a state-wide investigation into the alleged procurement of substances or preparations in breach of Australian Rule of Racing 256(2)(a)(iii).

"A person must not have in his or her possession or on his or her premises any medication, substance or preparation which has not been registered, labelled, prescribed, dispensed or obtained in accordance with applicable Commonwealth and State legislation.

"The participants have been notified and Stewards have requested submissions in writing or at an inquiry on a date to be fixed."

Integrity issues have repeatedly flared in Queensland racing in recent times.

In May, a band of trainers led by Group I winner Rob Heathcote spoke out to Racenet and complained they were not competing on a level playing field and insisting the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission wasn't doing enough to stop doping and cheating.
