Rising Star for So You Think
Tara Madgwick - Saturday August 31
Astute Kiwi trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman have a great record in Australia when they bring over classy three year-olds and exciting prospect Quick Thinker showed he can be a real star this spring with a dominant win in the Group III ATC Ming Dynasty Quality at Rosehill on Saturday.

Second on debut last April, Quick Thinker won the Listed Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie over 1600 metres at his second start before heading for a spell and the son of So You Think was having his first run since then on Saturday.

Connections feared 1400 metres on heavy ground might not be ideal for the son of So You Think, but under a col ride from Hugh Bowman his class shone through.

Quick Thinker settled back in the field and surged to the line to win by two lengths and has now two of three starts earning over $100,000 and has his sights set on all the major spring goals for staying three year-olds.

"Hughie won this race for us on Lion Tamer a few years ago and he went on to do good things so hopefully this guy can do the same," co-trainer Andrew Forsman said.

"He looked a little bit in trouble coming to the top of the straight and he had a lot to do but won with authority in the end and I think that's a sign of a good horse."
Quick Thinker is majority-owned by OTI Racing and director Terry Henderson was on hand to greet Quick Thinker after his win.

"I think he might be a special horse," Henderson said."He really has impressed all the way through and I know Murray and Andrew had a great opinion of him.

"He just hasn't put a foot wrong so far. I wouldn't have thought today would be his day because a wet track over 1400m, I would have thought he needed the 2000m.

"To see him hit the line like that is very exciting."

Quick Thinker as a yearling

Quick Thinker as a yearling

Quick Thinker was a $100,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Coolmore draft for De Burgh Equine and was bred by Bowcock Bloodstock. He is a half-brother to Group III placed The August from stakes-placed Al Maher mare Acouplamas, who comes from the family of Group I classic winners Blackfriars and Larrocha.

The current two year-old from Acouplamas, a colt by Zoustar, made $1,075,000 at Magic Millions this year for KBL Thoroughbreds when bought by Yu Long Investments/ RIFA Mustang.

He is one of 19 stakes-winners for So You Think, who went close to siring a new Group I winner on Saturday when So Si Bon finished a game second in the Group I MRC Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

The best son of the late great High Chaparral (IRE), So You Think stands at a fee of $38,500 at Coolmore this spring.

1800 Gloaming Stakes in 3 weeks
2000 Spring Champion Stakes 2 weeks later.

3 weeks to the Victoria Derby 2500m.

Be interesting to see what they do between the Champion and Derby ?

Good trainers will keep it up to him in the 3 weeks. Why are you worried about a 3 week break between races?

Well, I am not myself but it is an Australasianism to run them into the ground every fortnight.

Our "pattern racing" is constantly being changed, not necessarily upgraded.

Lion Tamer - had a more traditional Australasianism campaign 1400m, 2 weeks 1800m, 2 weeks 2000m, 3 weeks 2040m, 1 week 2500m.

“She needs to run, so I had to choose between the two race, just to get some mileage into her.

"She will go to 2000m more likely in the Turnbull or Hill Stakes.

"I think when you do train at a place like Rosehill you need to get that race mileage into them.

"We can’t be going into the Caulfield Cup underdone, so she needs to run every two weeks from now on."

Just saw the vision of Oppie being s#2t on by a passing bird during the interview.

The comment that the Thoroughbred Weekly presenters should have said was that the bird had backed Zebrowski, and was irritated at Opie's winning ride.

Last year AJC Derby winner resumes on Saturday over 1400m.

Where do we see him fitting in this autumn?

Holds entries for the QE Stks (outclassed?) & Sydney Cup (is he really a 2 miler?)

He beat Zebrowski twice in the Tulloch & Derby, and he didnt really frank the form in the spring with only mediocre efforts in Melb staying races.

Murray Baker is a wily old genius.  But my gut feeling is Quick Thinker is a G2/3 horse for the Sydney carnival (like. Sky High Stks or Neville Selwood Stks) and maybe a Doomben Cup in the winter.

Forsman quite bullish about him in interviews. Personally think he's in the Sydney cup up to his ears. What makes you think he isn't a 2miler

Depends on what weight he gets in the Sydney Cup.

The Chosen One is in career best form and he is a proven 2 miler, loves randwick and loves the wet tracks Sydney gets.

I would assume being an ATC Derby winner gives Quick Thinker at least 56 kilos and that gives him a hope, but I would still rather back the stable mate.

Desperately needs some wet tracks.  If it’s going to be a dry Sydney carnival, connections might as well save him for the Qld winter.

Yep that's right. He clearly likes the track wet. Doesn't like it firm. QLD carnival could be a good choice

Got soft track conditions to suit yesterday & still didn’t aim up.  Think it would be wise to redirect him to some weaker races in the Qld winter.

Probably reached his peak career performance in the ATC Derby last year and hasn't been able to find that form again. It happens to a lot of Derby winners over the years. Just has no zip at all.

I should know better than to doubt a wily old Kiwi like Murray Baker!

Strong win by QT today.

Probably still prefer the likes of Southern France, The Chosen One & Realm of Flowers, but QT is in the mix for sure.

Mate was very zippy yesterday, almost overraced in the run and had a very sharp sprint when they straightened.

Pardon My Dust - thats good to hear you were happy. Good to see Quick Thinker win. I wonder if the week back up will harm his chances for the Sydney Cup?

Backed up last year from the Tulloch to the Derby, so that is the least of his worries.

This is shaping as a very good edition of the Sydney Cup.

From memory we should see Quick Thinker, Rondinella, The Chosen One, Favorite Moon, Realm Of Flowers, Sound, Platinum Invader, Paths Of Glory, Selino, Sir Charles Road, She's Ideel, Miami Bound, Southern France, Shraaoh and Spirit Ridge.

Some in form horses, some suited at the 3200m and some who will look to be well weighted.

On a slow or worse Quick Thinker gets his chance.

Paths Of Glory was a great run on Saturday Rachel didn't give it much of a chance taking on the Waterhouse duo out in front. Can win the Cup with a decent sit.

Will Quick Thinker be getting a weight penalty for the Sydney Cup for winning the G2 Chairman's Quality (2600m)? If yes - has a penalty or no penalty been announced?

I am not sure he can run the 3200m PMD, however I do know that that is the way to ride him.

Maybe not push on during the race as Rachel did, but I mean you need to get him to break well from the gate and put him into the first five in running.

If he draws a gate and can run the 3200m, he is a chance, but this looks like being a very strong Sydney Cup.

Fair enough. I saw him win a Wyong Cup sitting back in the run on the fence but the field really bunched at the 400m and he got a great run through so he was in the right position to win. I wont be backing him either way.

Is a different horse on soft and heavy tracks and I noticed there is rain forecasted for Melbourne from Wednesday through to Saturday.

But surely Quick Thinker could win the Caulfield Cup? Does love the wet track though. Doesnt go as good on a dry track. Strange things can happen in Caulfield Cups sometimes.

Unfortunate news this morning, with Quick Thinker found with a tendon issue on morning check-up. He will be scratched from tomorrow's Caulfield Cup. Most disappointing for all connections, including and Murray Baker.
