Inner Melbourne local council Stonnington  has once again come under fire for sending hundreds of thousands of dollars of ratepayers’ money overseas in foreign aid.

The Friends of Baguia charity, which supports people in East Timor, has received Stonnington community grants and assistance to the value of $116,755 in the past 15 years.

It follows controversy this year when it was revealed the council had sent $90,000 offshore and spent $65,000 nationally as part of its disaster relief policy.

Some of the causes included $50,000 to Victorian bushfire relief, $15,000 to victims of the Indonesian earthquake, the Pacific tsunami and Typhoon Katsana, and $5000 each for Greek bushfires and Myanmar cyclone relief.

Councillor Marcia Griffin said she was outraged ratepayers were footing the bill for foreign aid.

Stonnington Ratepayers Association president Dean Hurlston said ratepayers were “alarmed” at the aid bill.

Stonnington Mayor Steve Stefanopoulos, who is of Greek heritage, said the council was proud to provide venues to host Friends of Baguia fundraising efforts.
