Topic: The Peter Moody Experiment. Posted: 19 Jun 2019 at 3:45pm |
MOODY EXPERIMENT OFF TO A FLYING STARTJune 18, 2019 4:12 pm Former champion trainer now bloodstock specialist come media personality Peter Moody was all smiles on Tuesday as the first stage of a three-year European experiment paid off. In 2017 Moody paid 22,000 guineas for a foal by Kendargent from the Gold Away mare Vital Body at the 2016 Tattersalls Foal Sale, and on Tuesday at Ballarat that horse – now named Caffrey – won on debut for trainer David Brideoake. “Most people buy the tried horses out of Europe and more are looking at their yearlings now, but I wanted to try a bit of experiment and buy some of their foals,” Moody explained. “I bought six – the Kendargent, two Sea The Stars, a Camelot, Champs Elysee, and a Big Bad Bob. This bloke (Caffrey) is the most forward of them so far but they are all big strong horses, it just comes down to ability now as it always does.” The most that Moody paid for any of the foals was 70,000 guineas for a Camelot x Mohican Princess filly which is a half-sister to two European Group 3 winners; even with a strong pedigree the most expensive of Moody’s sextet cost just a fraction of the cost of tried horses that are currently being imported from Europe to Australia. “That was the idea, to see how the young ones would cope out here. To see how they grow out and develop under our conditions,” he said. “So far so good, but let’s see how these other ones go as they get to the races.” Despite doing plenty wrong, Caffrey was a 3.25L winner of the 1200m Spicer Thoroughbreds maiden at Ballarat, a race he was sent out as $2.25 favourite for. I thought the main reason everyone and their dog brought in Europe, was to negate the period of time between purchase and racing, so in other words buying tried horses.
Isn't this negating that advantage?

I reckon his all up costs 'till say 4yo will be a heck of a lot less than buying any semi proven European horse of similar age. Many of these we never hear of after their 1st couple of starts & many others are lucky to win a city race, so it's certainly an experiment well worth undertaking

People hve been paying $250k or more for a "promising" maiden winner with a Gp3 5th placing to its name.
Which is clearly nonsense, however they cover themselves by selling 80% or so at cost plus 25% to established clientele.

The prices people are asking for tried horses anywhere in the World are ridiculous these days. Had someone quote me 300K for a provincial goat recently. 2-3 weeks earlier was quoted a similar price for a metro winner with form around a Gr1 winner. Problem is, someone will probably pay that price for the former.
Good luck to Moody with this endeavour I say

Nothing different. People have imported mares in foal and grown foals here for years, just sadly most end up back OS from the yearling auctions.

One has one A! Race!! Wait till they all hit the track and see after 3 years? Already at least 1.5 years of cost have been spent. Self promotion at its best so far? But if he can convince enough mugs? He may fluke a nice one in the many that get tried? Who knows maybe the at Ballarat is ok? I didn't see or do form on race

The experiment is going well.
Cernan was impressive given he was wide throughout but won the race comfortably when Linda asked him.
Cernan and Caffrey are winners. Shepherd was beaten a head. And they have only had 5 starts between them.

Meech was great on this horse today imo. Settled two out rearward, then moved out three wide as Tontonan said. But in moving forward she flushed another out so was able to gain cover for quite some distance and let the other bring her into the race before she pulled further out to make her winning run.
