Dalasan is back at happy hunting ground for Epsom Handicap tilt by Mitch Cohen Macdonald and co-trainer Andrew Gluyas have sent their star entire to Sydney to contest Saturday’s $1.5m Epsom Handicap (1600m) instead of waiting another week for the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield. The last time Dalasan was in Sydney he left a substantial impression on Randwick with a pair of Group 1 placings in two of Sydney’s biggest races. Dalasan finished a close up third in the $3m Doncaster Mile on April 10 before finishing less than a length behind English champion Addeybb and Verry Elleegant when third in the $4m Queen Elizabeth Stakes a week later. “When you look at his runs at Caulfield they aren't as good and it was either running in the Epsom or the Toorak. “With his form at Caulfield, we thought we would take him up there and it sounds like there is a good chance of the (wet) weather hitting later in the week. “He handles all track conditions so that won’t worry us.” Light showers have been forecast by the Bureau Of Meteorology from Wednesday onwards in Sydney with the track rated a Good (4) on Monday. The key booking of Australia’s leading jockey James McDonald is set to provide Dalasan with another boost in the Epsom. The son of Dalakhani arrived in Sydney last week with two Victorian starts under his belt after a mishap at Morphettville that saw him escape from his handlers resulting in a delayed start to his spring preparation. Dalasan showed no ill effects from the incident, finishing eleventh in the Listed Chautauqua Stakes at The Valley first-up before an eye-catching eighth in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield. Macdonald will weigh up heading back down to Melbourne after the Epsom. “We haven’t really decided what’s next but obviously the Cox Plate is there,” he said. “He would need to win an Epsom to get into that (Cox Plate) you’d think but there are other options whether it be the Mackinnon or Cantala Stakes.” |

Found a few better on the day, but very good again in the Epsom Hcp.
Another G1 placing, gee I’ll be cheering for him to crack it for a G1 win someday.

Connections probably will, but is MV really the track for him? All his best performances on spacious tracks like Randwick, Flemington & Morphettville. I’d be making sure he’s on target for the Cantala-Mackinnon double.

Leon on Racing.com after So You Can won was asked whether he goes to Melbourne for the Cox Plate or stays in Sydney.
He said he would wait a few days but ultimately it would be the owners decision. He’d just spoken with James McDonald and he was full of praise for the horse.

In-form jockey Daniel Moor has been locked in to ride Dalasan in next week's Cox Plate (2040m). Co-trainer Leon Macdonald reported that his five-year-old had recovered well from a narrow defeat in the G1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) - his fourth minor placing at the elite level - and had galloped at Rosehill on Tuesday ahead of a float trip to Flemington later in the week. While he confirmed that several jockeys had enquired about the ride, the veteran horseman said Moor was given the nod based on his recent form. In the space of a week, 37-year-old Moor won the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and the G1 Moir Stakes, as well as the G2 Stutt Stakes. "He's really good," said Macdonald, who trains in partnership with Andrew Gluyas. "He's still up in Sydney - he's going to gallop at Rosehill in the morning (Tuesday) and head down to Melbourne later in the week." Dalasan is rated a $51 chance in Sportsbet's Cox Plate market, which is headed by Zaaki ($2.90) and Caulfield Guineas-winning colt Anamoe ($5.50). |

South Australian star Dalasan has made a habit of running good races without winning at the highest level, and Saturday's Doncaster Mile was another excellent run according to co-trainer Leon Macdonald, albeit without being victorious. "He was good. He's a horse that's never ever races out of Group 1 company, it's a very difficult thing to do," said Macdonald, who trains in partnership with Andrew Gluyas. The five-year-old will back up this weekend in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick and has drawn the inside barrier. "It's a bloody sensational field," Macdonald said candidly. "He ran very well in this race last year and got within a length of the favourite Verry Elleegant, he could be going just as well as he was last year." Macdonald isn't put off by the prospect of yet another soaked Randwick track, despite Dalasan seemingly preferring a better surface. "I don't think he's well suited if we get a lot of rain again, I'd like to see him on a drier track to be honest, having said that he does get through it," Macdonald said. "It's a wonderful track Randwick, watching the race last week the track didn't look to race that badly. "I remember back in 1997 when Gold Guru won the Australian Derby the mile-and-a-quarter barrier was about eight inches underwater, and they ended up racing that day." Connections are then keen for Dalasan to contest next Saturday's G3 JRA Plate at Randwick (2000m), before returning home to South Australia. "He'll go around and then come to the JRA (Plate) next week," Macdonald said. "The horse is well, he's ready to cop it, it's not going to hurt him, he'll probably get a well-earnt spell after it." Macdonald has previously touted the Sydney autumn may signal the end of Dalasan's racing career, but a lack of stud options have forced the veteran trainer to rethink those plans. "We think we'll go on because of the fact he hasn't got a home," Macdonald said. "I don't think he's personally ever going to get one. "He's going to get some little stud like Rebel Raider got, five grand a go, if you do pay, and get some second-rate mares and maybe throw some good winners, it's not what being a stud is about. "A lot of them don't even get a chance to get really good mares." Instead Dalasan will be reset for a possible Melbourne spring campaign, where again he will again contest G1 races. "Because he hasn't won for a while his rating has dropped a bit, he might get into a race like the Toorak Handicap well," Macdonald said. "Those sorts of races suit him very well." |

What would be wrong with heading to Queensland with him.
It's a shame he will not find a good stud to ply his rightful trade, He was a very good 2yo and won the Ascot Vale Stakes at 3. WHilst that is not group 1 level it is still a high level and he has lovely pedigree and is clearly sound and tough. |

My thoughts exactly! How are the Hollindale and Doomben Cups not on this horses agenda??
His run in the Doncaster was actually really good & whilst out of his depth in this years QE Stakes, it would be very short sighted of connections to ignore the Queensland winter.

They're sending him to the 2000m Group 3 at Randwick next week, or at least that was reported through the week.
They're still chasing the elusive G1, why not go to Brisbane for the Hollindale, Doomben Cup and Q22?

Their focus on winning a G1 backfires because he's not quite at that level, at least at the big carnivals. His last 6 races- Cox Plate, MacKinnon, Canterbury Stakes, George Ryder, Doncaster, Queen Elizabeth.. all a bit beyond him.

He has still only had the one start at 2400m for a nice second behind a potential superstar in the South Australian Derby.
Why he has never attempted a Tancred is beyond me.

When I say this the dimwitted Jamal has no idea what I am getting at. If this guy was trained in Europe by a 3rd ranked European trainer he'd have a far superior record if probably less prize money. The vast majority of his racing would have been at 2000 - 2400.

No Djebel you do not get it. The horse is not good enough to be in Europe full stop. Stop posting garbage. Stop getting emotional over Dalasan. The horse isn't that good. Simple.

OK. I am going to give you the benefit of a little doubt. Tell me how many times Subjectivist, Stradivarius and Trushan have raced below 2000m ? How often have the same 3 horses run at trips of 1600m and less. How often did Enable or Torquator Tasso run below 2000m ?

Djebel - those horses you mentioned from Europe. Yep fine. However not every horse is going to run a longer trip. Why do you think most horses will run a longer trip based on breeding. Some do and some are unable to. Its just how it is.
Yep I see you're point in regards to those horses form Europe you mentioned but again mate not all horses will get out to a longer trip. See where I'm coming from.
