I totally ageee with you. Why this race? Did we have a breakdown rate anything like this prior to internationalisation? It does seem to be the internationals and there must be a reason. The image is terrible and the anti racing groups seem to be recruiting more and more followers each year. I am now anti jumps racing because the death toll is included in overall racing deaths, which makes flat racing look alarmingly dangerous, when it isn’t. Just gives the group a free hit every time something crashes to the ground. They even use stats including horses that break loose and go through a fence. “Racetrack death tally”. Even the whip may need to go. Never thought I’d say that but it’s another easy target for them. |

Sorry ENABLED, that is actually an opinion piece from PETA, but published in the SMHwhich has a stated position that it neither supports nor opposes opinion pieces. Just in the same way as it presents without comment opinion pieces on any number of issues but which represent differing points of view.

Got a link? Pengilly article mentions deaths in recent years without any comment. Fact of racing and more common than some think

Yes, just another unsurprising piece from PETA.
However we've had a colt suffer a shoulder injury necessitating euthenasia after just gambolling in a paddock. And another who for no apparent reason cracked a bone in a hind leg, again in the paddock, which also meant she had to be put down. Conversely we've been partners or breeders of about 50 horses, however not one has so far sustained injuries requiring lethal injection. |

Presume you're asking ENABLED for that link Blinder.
Am almost breathless with anticipation, no doubt attendant with a repeat of his/her earlier but appallingly misogynistic and misleading comments about females and Michelle in particular as posted earlier in this thread.

Most of the news sites aren't attacking the incident. Mind you the photos don't do the race any favours.
https://www.news.com.au/sport/superracing/melbourne-cup-tragedy-as-the-cliffsofmoher-pulls-up-lame/news-story/c63b5761bf4a3cdde4a8903246e6f004
THE horse that exited midway through the Melbourne Cup — the Aidan O’Brien-trained The Cliffsofmoher — has been euthanised. O’Brien confirmed the five-year-old died after fracturing a shoulder early in the race. “Unfortunately these things can happen to a horse galloping around the field at home,” O’Brien said. |

Particularly after a small setback. Youngstar stayed on better than I expected. Waller kept saying she's not seasoned enough, presumably owners insisted?

Yes, nothing like your claim. There were follow ups from the organiser iirc which suggested the story was a beat up. I'll see if I can track that down for you.

I had one that felt NQR but despite all efforts vets couldn't diagnose & I refused their request for "one more gallop' to make it sorer (easier for them to pinpoint). Xrays a hairline fracture of the shoulder which one more gallop would have smashed. He was retired as a pleasure horse having rehabbed successfully.

If she bothered to be professional and train properly like top male jockeys, she would have not needed to use drugs to suppress her appetite which she was busted for.
Look at how well all the jockeys and trainers spoke today. So eloquent and professional. |

There it is, same website: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/aug/14/michelle-payne-newbury-illness-return-to-saddle-horse-racing
Chapple-Hyam suggested there had been too much coverage of Payne’s early departure from a pre-Shergar Cup media event in London last Thursday, when the jockey spent hours with the press but eventually complained of feeling ill and returned to her hotel against the wishes of Ascot staff. “I just think things get exaggerated,” Chapple-Hyam said. “Three hours is a long time and, if you’re not feeling well and you’ve done your duties, there’s no reason why you can’t disappear. If it was a bloke, there wouldn’t have been so much drama. Her brother-in-law [Kerrin McEvoy, who made no appearance at the media event] was ill as well and you don’t see his picture on the front page.” |

Like you for example? All been said ad nauseam on the MP thread, head over there and knock yourself even further into the 19th century. Her MC speech was one for the annals, without a trace of the dull and saccharine cliches of Hughie for example.

The need for drugs in her case was due to the surgical removal of I think her spleen which resulted in her losing the natural means of feeling replete.

And let's get the UK bit right.
She was crook, so wasn't up to riding after running her fifth in a Group race. Same complaint that caused her brother-in-law Kerrin McEvoy to stand down if memory serves.
However she still fronted the media, and the glitterati tents, for up to 3 hours before exiting. "A statement from the Melbourne Cup-winning jockey explained the circumstances, after reports emerged during the week she left a media event against organisers' wishes despite feeling ill.

Odd that he didn't mention the many male jockeys done for the same thing, or the top male jocks caught betting on races, or the many caught doing recreational drugs.
