Hmmm.....always tempting fate to write them off, but it certainly did not beat half the field, as was predicted.

He is being retired this prep Jamal
Always been a horse that takes a couple of runs to get going anyway. He wasn’t uncompetitive so no reason not give him a couple more

You have to remember people had him written off last spring.
Then he came out and won a Group 1

Not too many 9 year olds shine first-up, in any company, let alone at the top level.

Let's face it he's much more suited to the Hypernion ans Strickland than he is to the Roma Cup, hopefully he shows more next start however.

Six-time Group 1 winner Black Heart Bart is nearing retirement according to trainer Lindsey Smith and will have only one more opportunity to demonstrate that he still has the desire to continue racing.

Racing in Western Australia for the first time since late 2017, 'Bart' finished last in the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m), beaten eight lengths by Vega Magic, another G1 winner who was returning home.

"I didn't like what I saw," Smith said.

"I'm going to give him a really easy week and then we'll trial him next Monday, a decision will be made on his future after that."

Smith, known for training his runners in the heavy sand, expressed that maybe Black Heart Bart was flat from the amount of work he had done leading into the race.

"Maybe he was a bit cooked from all of the work in the heavy sand leading up to the race," he said.

"We missed a trial, so we just wanted to make sure he was rock-hard fit, but maybe he went over the top.

"If he trials well then he can head to the G3 Belmont Sprint, if not that will be enough for him."

Smith confirmed that three-time G1 winner Humidor will make his Western Australian debut in the Belmont Sprint on May 30.

"The 1200m would have been too short, so he can step out over 1400m," Smith said.

"He's been working well and we're looking forward to seeing what he does this campaign."

Won his trial by 5 lengths today
Although he was against a bunch of low grade horses, he looked to still have something to offer

Both Black Heart Bart and Humidor should be retired.  They have both had it

I saw this on Twitter

"Black Heart Bart unfortunately bled from both nostrils today and has been retired. What a grand campaigner. $20,000 Perth Yearling Sale buy who retires with earnings of $4,818,580. 17 wins - 6 x Gr1s.
Thanks for the memories Bart! https://t.co/KwcZ9P1Cy2"

I am not cast doubt on his qualifications, but just asking a question.

What is the criteria for Living Legends to accept horses?
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

We can add Jungle Edge to the list. Think BHB

Just saw a wonderful video of him kicking up his heels in a paddock. No doubt he's loved and will be looked after wherever he goes.
Happy retirement Bart!????

Heard Lindsey on ch78 yesterday, said he felt a bit guilty about running him this weekend.
Didnt specify where he was going end up, but said he had a paddock for life

Bart retires to picturesque cattle farm

Kate Watts

Black Heart Bart will spend the remainder of his days at a Western Australian cattle farm, after connections decided not to send him to Living Legends.

The rising 10-year-old ran his last race at Belmont on Saturday, with trainer Lindsey Smith confirming he had officially been retired.

The six-time Group 1 winner finished his career having won 17 of 62 races with prizemoney of $4,818,580, after being purchased for just $20k in an online sale.

Living Legends confirmed they would be keen to offer a home to the popular galloper, but his connections have decided to keep him closer to them in his original state.

Managing owner Kim Renner, who is a Geraldton builder, said while they were thankful Living Legends had shown interest in Black Heart Bart, they were keeping 'their mate' somewhere they would be able to regularly go and visit him.

"He means so much to us and he's certainly our friend so I've decided to send him to live with a good friend of mine who has a 300-acre cattle farm in Albany," Renner said.

"He'll really enjoy it there among other horses too and it means I can still go and see him more often, there's even a chance that mate's daughter might ride him in shows too.

"I've owned more than 300 horses but he's right up the top of the most special.

"We bought him as a group of five mates and sadly two of those friends have since passed away from cancer and a heart attack, so he's even more special that we were able to share all those moments with him together."

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Great news! Thanks Gay.
Heart warming that the owners want to keep him close by - as you would and should!!!

(I'm all for Living Legends but there was a recent hooha with random Facebook idiots saying Makybe Diva should go to LL so the general public could visit her. As if she doesn't already have the best possible home and an old mare's welfare is less important than tourists. Makes me livid just recalling it.)

I know it is in WA but Albany is about 900km from where Renner lives.

Would be greener than Geraldton.
And closer than living legends.
