Check the results at the Sapphire Coast today.  Wonder if they swab or look for swelling or puncture marks on horses' necks on Cup day?  Shocked

Big day for Ritchie Lamming 3 winners @Sapphire Coast on their feature day and a nice third in the Bega Cup.
Interesting Easy Beast has won the feature sprint there 3 years in a row and looking at the results he won it with another horse the year before, good record.

Victorian trainer Richard Laming suspended for three months

Cranbourne trainer Richard Laming has been given a three-month ban for presenting a horse at the races with prohibited cobalt levels.

Laming, who pleaded “guilty” to the presentation charge at the Victorian Racing Tribunal, was also fined $1000 for failure to provide ”proper” stable treatment records.

The decision, Laming‘s third major suspension in 11 years, relates to the horse Iam Ekstraordinary, which contested a 1200m Ballarat maiden on May 23, 2018.

A pre-race urine sample from the gelding, which ran fifth on that occasion, detected cobalt in excess of the prescribed limit.

In an earlier hearing, related to the matter, the 38 year-old horseman was found “not guilty” of administering the prohibited substance.

In its decision handed down on Friday, the VRT panel said Laming‘s stable practices, in relation to record keeping, was “careless, inadequate and displayed indifference”.

“They have been rightly described as ‘shambolic’,” Judge John Bowman’s decision reads.

“There was a real lack of checks and balances in your system.

“This is not a situation of one slip made in otherwise a well-run and carefully operated stables.”

While Laming‘s guilty plea worked in his favour, the 38 year-old’s track record did not.

“You have been a licensed trainer for most of your adult life,” the decision reads.

“You do not have an unblemished record. You already have had a substantial disqualification, namely three years, in relation to a prohibited substance (EPO). That was imposed in November 2010. You also received a two months suspension in September 2018.

“Accordingly, you are entitled to little or no discount in relation to your record.”

The VRT deemed Laming‘s “careless and slipshod stable practices” as bad for the image of racing.

Iam Ekstraordinary was also disqualified from the May 23 race and placings amended accordingly.

Tho' I'm loathe to defend him, his horses appear to be very fit so the Heavy 10 (by meeting's end) would have suited perfectly.

This thread should probably be pinned, it's added to so often Big smile

A parkland surveillance of Richard Laming’s Cranbourne stables indicated ‘’activity consistent with drenching of a horse’’ the inquiry into an alleged race day stomach-tubing of Jamaican Rain heard on Tuesday.

The hearing before the Victorian Racing Tribunal had its first sitting in the County Court on Tuesday after a ‘’view day’’ on Monday at Laming’s stables, where it is alleged that in November, 2019 the trainer illegally stomach-tubed or attempted to stomach-tube mare Jamaican Rain, who was listed to race that day in a group 3 race at Flemington.

Laming faces two charges out of the raid while stable hands Marnu Potgieter and Zeyaur Rahman each face one charge of being a party to the alleged stomach-tubing or attempt to do so.

The inquiry before a three-person panel chaired by Judge John Bowman, heard that Dion Villella, the manager of the Compliance Assurance Team, set himself up in a surveillance position in parkland behind Laming’s Cranbourne stables where he said he observed  stomach-tubing equipment – a bucket, a funnel a twitch and a tube – taken to a location near Jamaican Rain’s box.

Brendan Murphy, QC, for RV stewards, told the tribunal that Villella then called fellow steward Mark Stevens to re-enter Laming’s property after an earlier stable visit that morning, where he is alleged to have later seen ‘’a large amount of discharge liquid dripping from the horse’s right nostril’’.

The tribunal heard the equipment could not subsequently be found, aside from a bucket, which lay outside a window and contained a ‘’yellow, cream-coloured liquid’’.

Murphy said horse-bed shavings were found on the window-sill.

Damian Sheales, who is representing all three defendants, told the tribunal that all three deny the charges that Jamaicain Rain was illegal stomach-tubed or that there was an attempt to do so.

The hearing continues this afternoon and is due to run until Friday.

Richard Laming's hearing into alleged race-day treatment was adjourned sensationally on Wednesday with Racing Victoria making a sudden application to the Victorian Racing Tribunal to postpone proceedings.

Brendan Murphy, QC, who was appearing for RV, applied to the VRT late Wednesday morning for the matter to hold over until Thursday, citing the potential that the tribunal could be put into 'a difficult position' and claiming it would be 'very dangerous to ignore the circumstances'.

"I am making application that the matter be adjourned until tomorrow, but I will not indicate the basis of that application," Murphy told the tribunal chaired by Judge John Bowman.

"In our professional view it would be very dangerous to ignore the circumstances and it would put the tribunal ultimately, I would have thought, in a difficult position."

Murphy's application came after the hearing, which was into its third day, had reconvened following a break to permit Laming's barrister Damien Sheales to hear an audio recording made by RV's manager of the Compliance Assurance Team, Dion Villella.

The recording was made when Villella was making surveillance of Laming's property in November 2019 after an earlier stable inspection made with fellow steward Mark Stevens.

Laming was subsequently charged, as were his stablehands Marnu Potgieter and Zeyaur Rahman for the illegal race-day drenching or the attempt to do so of mare Jamaican Rain, who was later withdrawn from a race she was entered for that day at Flemington.

Sheales, who is appearing for all three defendants, told the tribunal: "Mr Murphy has told me no more than he has told the tribunal. The adjournment is only until tomorrow and if the case is proceeding, we intend to proceed tomorrow."

Judge Bowman granted the adjournment, with the hearing due to resume at 9:30am (AEDT) on Thursday.

This is disgraceful. “No comment” from RVL is woefully inadequate when so much money is spent on this “CAT” team surveillance & legal costs. Why bother if they can’t get it to stick!

Dion Villella was one of the laziest and thickest apprentices ever to enter a racecourse. His riding would have given PMD a brain aneurysm. Speaks volumes for the sad state of stewarding in Vic over the last 15 years.

Was Deon around when the little bald bloke Saundry was head of the RV? I can't recall Deon being involved with the alleged Bullying of Kate Goodrich, God RV have a lot to answer for, Saundry bolted to NZ, Bailey bailed to SING, there's just no accountability at that joint, how the hell do they hold their heads up......it stinks.

If the racing media have any self respect they will be hammering Racing Victoria until they provide answers. There should be no let up.

This has such a bad stench it really should be taken out of racings hands.

I am definitely not a Laming fan. Have seen too much of his crap behavior over the years, even as recently as last month @ Trios in Crimebourne. However, this whole situation needs to be put in the open by RVL or they will be getting another Nikola Gobbo situation.
RVL needs to make sure they are not left looking to be the ones who need investigating, but it sure looks smelly. OuchOuchOuchOuch
