The Road to the Kentucky Derby continues this Saturday with the G3 Lecomte Stakes from the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

The Lecomte has a strong field with nine entries drawn. The are two particular entries that appear to be above the rest. Pappacap, the son of Gun Runner won the G2 Best Pal Stakes during the summer at Del Mar and followed up with runner-up efforts in the G1 American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar. Pappacap was beaten only by the undefeated Corniche, who will probably be crowned the 2021 Champion two-year-old male.

The other interesting entry is Epicenter has already won a race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Epicenter  was impressive in the inaugural running of the 1 1/16-mile Gun Runner Stakes at Fair Grounds last month, winning easily by 6 1/2 lengths.

The Lecomte faired a major upset with a 28/1 longshot charging down the straight to collar the two favorites. Call Me Midnight (Midnight Lute — Overseen, by First Defence) having his first start of the year after 10 week break stunned Epicenter who over took Pappacap only to get nailed on the wire.

Still it will be interesting what lies ahead for Call Me Midnight when his sire was a two-time Breeders' Cup Sprint winner. Early time in January to making rash decisions but favorites getting done left and right (including the Titans and Packers) gives plenty of thought as we go to the next event which will be the G3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park next Saturday.

While I've plugging the Road to the Kentucky Derby here its worth mentioning that the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (~US$3 million) at Gulfstream Park over 1 1/8 miles should be a memorable clash between 2021 Longines #1 horse Knicks Go, winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic and Life Is Good winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

Knicks Go is retiring after this start but Life Is Good could be seen in UAE or in the G1 Saudi Cup.

Nice program at Gulfstream Park with 7 graded events.

Jibir by the great turf horse and sire Dubawi, from a Monsun mare.  Our German colleague Ticino would certainly approve.

Interesting winner today at Oaklawn Park in the G3 Bayakoa Stakes for older mares.
The winner Miss Bigly (Gemologist out of Miss Puzzle (AUS), by Citidancer (IRE))

Miss Puzzle was bred in OZ, never raced there. Had 2 wins in NZ and then shipped to the US where she had one win in six starts and that is where tomorrow's Super Bowl will be held!!!

Interesting one from the US.

Saturday's winner at Gulfstream Park in the G3 HoneyBee Stakes for 4YO+ mares over a distance of 1 mile is an all international conglomeration which is worth a mention on this thread.

In Italian (GB) as 11/4 favorite won leading all the way.

Now the breeding:

In Italian (GB), Chestnut Filly, by Dubawi (IRE) out of Florentina (AUS), by Redoute's Choice (AUS). Foaled Mar 18, 2018 in Great Britain.

Florentina - won the G3 Gold Coast Guineas back in 2011!!!!!!

Thanks Brudder.  And great to have you back.

That dam was a Gp3 winner in Oz, is sibling to a couple of other stakes-winners, and is intensely inbred to Danehill and outstanding broodmare Dancing Show (from the Best In Show female family).

Alluring Angel (GB)  (Fastnet Rock (AUS) out of  All of Me (GB), by  Teofilo (IRE))

ALLURING ANGEL (GB) was urged along while well off the pace, went around the turn in the two path, swung five wide into the stretch then tipped further out, rallied outside into the final furlong and closed with a rush to get up late.  Won by 1/2 length in 1:02.45!

Saratoga Aug 5th Race 1
Restricted Starter Handicap  3YO F&M 7 furlongs on dirt (~1400 metres)

Well Spent  (Hampton Court (AUS) out of Cryptic Message, by Cryptograph)
Bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm

Well Spent  (6/5) broke out then hit the gate and stumbled awkwardly, recovered to race just off the pace under restraint, drafted inside around the turn, was asked while cutting the corner into the stretch then hugged the fence while making a brave bid inside of three opponents at the three-sixteenths, was driven through under a strong-hand ride to take the lead into the final furlong, shook clear under two pops of a right-handed crop outside the sixteenth-pole then was placed back under a brisk hand-ride to the wire while best. Won by 3 lengths in 1:24.99!

While I usually post about TBs...

This time its about the animalistic instincts of Chad Brown (current top trainer at the Saratoga meeting).

Brown was arrested Aug. 17 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on a Class A misdemeanor charge of criminal obstruction of breathing.

According to local reports from Brown's Thursday morning arraignment in Saratoga Springs City Court, assistant district attorney Kayla Potter told Judge Francine Vero that Brown pushed a woman down a flight of stairs at his home, pinned her to the ground, and tried to choke her before throwing her out of the house.

Brown's attorney, Joseph Gerstenzang, told the judge the woman who was attacked broke into Brown’s house in the middle of the night and Brown was defending himself. Gerstenzang, who entered a not guilty plea on Brown's behalf.

Career changing move....

Let's get serious now....

The draw for the "Mid-summer Classic", The G1 Travers Stakes over 1 1/4 miles at Saratoga!

Eight entries but one for the ages!

1. Cyberknife - G1 Arkansas Derby, G1 Haskell Stakes LS
2. Rich Strike - 1st Kentucky Derby, 6th Belmont Stakes
3. Ain't Life Grand - G3 Iowa Derby (it would be really grand if he could provide the upset)
4. Gilded Age - 2nd Curlin Stakes (finished well from far behind by Medaglia D'Oro)
5. Artorius - 3 starts only - Curlin Stakes winner at Spa in a canter
6. Epicenter - 2nd Kentucky Derby, 2nd Preakness Stakes, G2 Jim Dandy winner LS
7. Early Voting - 1st Preakness Stakes, 4th Jim Dandy winner LS
8. Zandon - 3rd Kentucky Derby, 2nd G2 Jim Dandy, G1 Blue Grass winner earlier

All three placegetters from Kentucky Derby will be competing!!!!

A complete blinder!

As a bit of diversion I'll post here about an event that was held at Aqueduct Racecourse in NY yesterday on opening day of the NYRA fall meeting that was transferred from Belmont Park because of construction of the infield tunnel.

The event was the GI Lonesome Glory Handicap Hurdle over 2 1/2 miles (~4,000m)

Usually I don't mention these kind of events but there was an association with Australia that hit my eye and I wanted to share here with my plebes.

The winner by nine lengths was the 41/1 Irish-bred longshot Noah and the Ark.

OK so whats the big deal? Well lets have a look at the breeding of the eight-year-old.

Noah and the Ark (IRE) - Vinnie Roe (IRE) out of Well Water (IRE), by Old Vic (GB)!!!

So there you have it good ol' Vinnie Roe has a winner in the US. For those in OZ a few will remember his trips and races in OZ, especially coming 2nd in the 2004 G1 Melbourne Cup to Makybe Diva after winning the G1 St Leger at The Curragh.

Watch his son rip this field here:

TJ, you didn't follow up what this boy did this weekend so I thought I'd just complement you here.

Nations Pride bolted in the third leg of the NYRA Turf Trinity, GIII Jockey Club Derby at Aqueduct over 1 1/2 miles (~2400 meters). Dettori rode him like he knew he had something left. Had him nicely placed near the rear as they went around the track the first time and them when they entered the final stretch he just blasted away and won by 6 1/4 lengths and set a new record for the distance of 2:24.14 eclipsing the old mark set by Pebbles (GB) in the 1985 Breeder's Cup Turf (in that race she defeated Strawberry Road (AUS)). He is by Teofilo (IRE), sire of two Melbourne Cup winners. Maybe Melbourne Cup would be a better choice than the WS Cox Plate?

2022 Preakness winner Early Voting retired. Obviously something went a miss during the Travers Stakes in August at Saratoga when he finished barely crossing the finishing line. Another shot career of only 6 starts. Off to Coolmore (Ashland) for his next career with his fee undetermined...
