Bob Baffert trained Concert Tour (Street Sense — Purse Strings, by Tapit) proved too good winning by 4 1/4 lengths with stablemate Hozier flying for second over Big Lake with Super Stock in 4th.

The result gives Baffert his eight victory in the event and now even more reason to keep Concert Tour away from California but the win gave the winner enough qualification points to go straight into the Kentucky Derby.

From my correction:

Swiss Skydiver resumes winning the G1 Beholder Stakes at Santa Anita Park and while G1 Kentucky Oaks winner from last season Shedaresthedevil also won the G2 Azeri Stakes.
The winning mares are very tough! It is inevitable that both of these mare will be poised to tackle champion Monomoy Girl sometime this season.

At 24, The Deputy Pulled From Bail Pen By Racetrack Connections

The Deputy Photo by Joe Nevills

Irish-bred The Deputy, trained by Jenine Sahadi for Team Valor and Gary Barber to win the $1-million Santa Anita Derby in 2000 and second choice in the Kentucky Derby, is now safely ensconced in Texas after some maneuvering to rescue him from a “kill pen” on a feedlot about an hour north of Dallas week before last.

When intrepid horse lovers used their Internet monitoring skills to learn that the now 24-year-old stallion had been bought cheaply at a sale in Iowa and transported to the feedlot in Texas, word spread fast and Team Valor CEO Barry Irwin quickly managed to buy him on behalf of his longtime partner Barber and ex-trainer Sahadi.

Utilizing networking through the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, the old connections contacted TAA activist Donna Keen, who was able to rapidly pick up and move The Deputy to her TAA-approved Remember Me Rescue.

“We decided to have Donna quarantine The Deputy for a while, do some diagnostic work including bloods and a fecal and not reveal anything about the rescue until we were certain that he was healthy, as Donna warned us that horses from feedlots can contract diseases quite readily,” Irwin said.

“When the tests all came back negative today and the vet- check proved unremarkable, we decided it was time to tell the story, not to portray ourselves as heroes, but to put an end to the salacious, untrue and unfounded tales that had been circulating online. We want to thank those horse lovers who helped us in our endeavors.”

Donna Keen said “We are thrilled to have been able to help the original connections and to be able to take care of the horse and share him with visitors to our rescue. He is, as could be expected, a bit underweight at this time, but when he fills back up and once again looks the part we look forward to showing him off here in Texas. We are very honored and proud to have been selected as his forever home.”

The Deputy, bought by Team Valor and Barber after he won a maiden race in England at two, enjoyed a brief but meteoric rise to stardom in the winter of his 3-year-old season at Santa Anita, where the dark-coated colt rattled off victories in the listed Hill Rise Stakes, Grade 2 Santa Catalina Stakes (defeating subsequent Breeders' Cup Turf Mile hero War Chant) and the G1 Santa Anita Derby, while running second in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes to the Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus.

As the first starter for a female trainer in the 2000 Kentucky Derby, he was second choice, but bowed a tendon in the race and never ran again.

Barber, who won the Preakness with War of Will, said “I have always had a soft spot in my heart for The Deputy. He was my first Grade 1 winner.”

“He was the easiest horse to be around. All class. He meant a lot to me and my barn,” said Sahadi.

The son of Petardia was originally syndicated to stand at Margaux Farm in Midway, Ky., after which he did stints at farms in Michigan and Iowa.

Hot Rod Charlie, California shipper proved to hot for Midnight Bourbon and fast finishing O Besos  who sits on the borderline of qualification in 16th place with 25 points.

G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks (sic)  (1 1/8 miles) Turfway Park, Florence, KY
Like The King and Sainthood both had troubled trips on the Synthetic surface and finished one-two and IMO will be both at long double digit odds come the first Saturday in May.

G2 UAE Derby (1900m) Meydan Racetrack, Dubai UAE
Godolphin has another fine one here in Irish bred Rebel's Romance who blitzed his rivals by over 5 lengths. Whether he is shipped to US for the Derby is a big question since The Sheikh already has Derby favourite Essential Quality qualified for the Derby.

G1 Florida Derby 1 1/8 miles) Gulfstream Park, Hallandale, Florida
Finally Known Agenda showed his stuff and touted potential winning one of the big prep race. Favourite Greatest Honor who had already qualified ran his usual "come-from-behind" style and finished third.

This Saturday:

G2 Wood Memorial over 1 1/8 miles @ Aqueduct, Ozone Park, NY
Nine starters with only Canadian bred Weyburn who has safely qualified for the big event. Risk Taking, Brooklyn Strong and Crowded Trade all needing points to qualify and rave horse Prevalence who has won some allowances by big margins hoping ti finish first or second to secure a start. Interesting race in NY!

G2 Blue Grass Stakes over 1 1/8 miles @ Keeneland, Lexington, Kentucky
Essential Quality is odds-on here with 9 other challengers several who have qualification points who will want to secure a place in the KDerby. Highly Motivated and Keepmeinmind hoping for an upset.

G1 Santa Anita Derby over 1 1/8 miles @ Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, California.
Bob Baffert sends Medina Sprint in this one but with Life is Good out the event has attracted 10 runners. Many of these entered now that on they have a chance to qualify even though they are on the periphery of qualification, including Roman Centurian, The Great One, Dream Shake and Parnelli.

Weyburn finished 4th, and is in doubt for the KDerby. The event was won by 72/1 outsider Bourbonic who started last and lagged behind the field but finished all over the leaders and caused a boilover. You can't get a juicy price for Todd Pletcher trained horses and anudder one owner by Calumet Farm.

G2 Blue Grass Stakes over 1 1/8 miles @ Keeneland, Lexington, Kentucky

Essential Quality did start the 3/5 odds-on by had to pulled all stops to beat Highly Motivated in the best race of the qualification process.

G1 Santa Anita Derby over 1 1/8 miles @ Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, California.
Bob Baffert sends Medina Sprint ....

Medina Spirit did start odds-on at 4/5 but was soundly beaten into second place by Rock Your World (11/2) who won on the turf last start.

Road to Kentucky Derby qualification ends this weekend as we have the last events.

G1 Arkansas Derby 1 1/8 miles

The last major qualifier for those in the bubble.
Hozier (26) needs to come 1st, 2nd or 3rd
Get Her Number (29), Caddo River (32) and Super Stock (37) needs to come 1st, 2nd
Baffert sends undefeated Rebel winner Concert Tour (10) who has already qualified for some extra fine tuning and cash.

G3 Lexington Stakes 1 1/16 miles
Only 20 points for the winner in what is considered a "Wild Card" event.

Proxy (22) is the class of the field would only need a second place to get in but his connections may not go to the KDerby unless he wins while Jeff Ruby 3rd place finisher Hockey Dad (27) needs to win to get in.

Only 20 points for the winner in what is considered a "Wild Card" event.

Both Proxy (22) and  Hockey Dad (27) failed with 18/1 King Fury winning on the slop but if anything we might see him later at Pimilco or Belmont Park.

Every once in a while you get a rare occurrence of an event that's worth noting.

This Saturday the G1 Apple Blossom Handicap was supposed to be match race between Two-time Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Monomoy Girl and last year's G1 Preakness winner Swiss Skydiver.

It was even better!

Odds on 3/5 Monomoy Girl halfway down the straight looked like she would get up! But it was not  meant to be. Instead she out kicked not by Swiss Skydiver but by the former Mexican Three-Year-Old Champion of 2019, Letruksa!!!!

Letruksa (Super Saver — Magic Appeal, by Successful Appeal) won her first seven career starts, including six at Hipodromo De Las Americas in Mexico City. The streak was highlighted by blowout scores in two legs of Mexico's Triple Crown for 3-year-old fillies in 2019—the G1-Mex Clasico Esmeralda and G1-Mex Clasico Diamante.

Last year Letruksa won the G3 Shuvee Stakes at Saratoga, G3 Rampart Stakes at Gulfstream Park, and this year in January G3 Houston Ladies Classic at Sam Houston Race Park. Last start she was a close second in the G2 Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

Draw for the Kentucky Derby is on today. A field of 20 will draw. Whether they all start is anudder question...

There have been many defections in the two since the last qualifying event took place.

Churchill Downs will be about 25% full for the day. One of the biggest eyesores is that the dispute between the Las Vegas casinos and Churchill Downs where its been about 1 1/2 years since the signal has not been sent is that those that punt only on the day will have to take odds from the casinos and not from the mutual pools coming into Louisville.

Ah butt we are in the Smartphone, internet VPN era so gone are the days where you could be escorted out of a track or casino for using your phone!!!

Medina Sprint winner of the Kentucky Derby has been found to have tested positive for the corticosteroid betamethason.

Possible DQ on the cards.

Betamethasone is a Class C drug that is allowed in Kentucky as a therapeutic. However, state rules require at least a 14-day withdrawal time and any level of detection on race day is a violation. The threshold was changed to zero from 10 picograms in August.

Bob Baffert's trained Gamine was also DQ from 3rd place in the Kentucky Oaks last year with a much higher dose.

Baffert: Kentucky Derby Winner Medina Spirit Tests Positive For Betamethasone

Trainer Bob Baffert announced Sunday morning that Medina Spirit, winner of the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on May 1, has tested positive for betamethasone, a corticosteroid, and faces a possible disqualification from the race – the first medication DQ since Dancer's Image lost his Derby victory in 1968 after a disputed positive test for the anti-inflammatory phenylbutazone.

If the drug is confirmed in a split sample it would be Baffert's fifth medication violation since May 2020.

Speaking from his barn at Churchill Downs, Baffert said his assistant, Jimmy Barnes called Baffert yesterday while he was en route to the airport in California for a flight to Kentucky, notifying him that he had been served by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission after the post-race sample came back positive for 21 picograms of the medication.

Baffert insisted Medina Spirit has never been treated with betamethasone.

“I don't know what's going on, but there's something that is not right,” Baffert said.

When asked whether he would publicly provide Medina Spirit's veterinary records, which he said would not include betamethasone administration, Baffert said he would provide them to the commission.

“it's not official till the split sample comes. Usually we wait for that, but I wanted to get in front of it,” Baffert said.

A split sample typically is requested by the trainer and, if it confirms the original finding, a hearing is conducted with stewards.

Last November, in the wake of his fourth medication violation in 2020, Baffert issued a statement saying, “I want to raise the bar and set the standard for equine safety and rule compliance going forward.”

Betamethasone is a commonly-used corticosteroid which is typically given by intra-articular joint injection. Corticosteroids are effective at reducing pain and inflammation in joints as a result of osteoarthritis or other problems. In 2020, Kentucky pushed back administration times for corticosteroids from seven days pre-race to 14 days pre-race as part of a series of new medication rules aimed at improving equine safety. In 2021, stewards have issued rulings in three cases of corticosteroid overages, all of them for dexamethasone.

When Baffert was asked by a reporter about the typical use of betamethasone, he replied, “It's a…um…I don't know, it's an anti-inflammatory … You're gonna have to talk to the vet.”

Baffert-trained Chalatan and Gamine both tested positive for lidocaine at Oaklawn Park on May 2, 2020, resulting in a 15-day suspension for the trainer and disqualification of both horses (Gamine from an allowance race and Charlatan from the G1 Arkansas Derby) – sanctions that were ultimately reversed by the Arkansas Racing Commission. Baffert was fined $5,000 instead.

Gamine then tested positive for betamethasone after a third-place finish in the G1 Kentucky Oaks on Sept. 4. She was disqualified and placed last and Baffert was fined $1,500. A fourth positive test came when Merneith was found to have dextrorphan in her system after finishing second in a July 25 allowance race at Del Mar. Baffert received a $2,500 fine for that violation.

Several hours after the press conference, Baffert released the following statement through his attorney, Craig Robertson:

BOB BAFFERT STATEMENT
Yesterday I was informed by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission that MEDINA SPIRIT allegedly tested positive for 21 picograms of betamethasone.  I want to be clear on three points.  First, I have seen it reported that betamethasone is a “banned” substance.  This is not true.  Betamethasone is an allowable, therapeutic medication.  Second, and more importantly, at no point in time has anyone in my barn or any of my veterinarians ever administered betamethasone to MEDINA SPIRIT.  I do not know how betamethasone could have possibly gotten into MEDINA SPIRIT, but I do know it did not come from me.  Therefore, I intend to thoroughly and transparently investigate the matter to determine how this could have happened. We will have the split sample analyzed and DNA testing performed.  That will be the first step in the process.  Lastly, as I have stated in the past: there is a broader issue in horse racing concerning the regulation of allowable medications at 21 picograms – which is a trillionth of a gram – that the industry must address.  I would ask that everyone reserve judgment until all facts and circumstances are thoroughly investigated and discovered.

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

“ Lastly, as I have stated in the past: there is a broader issue in horse racing concerning the regulation of allowable medications at 21 picograms – which is a trillionth of a gram – that the industry must address.  I would ask that everyone reserve judgment until all facts and circumstances are thoroughly investigated and discovered”

As many times as he has been "done" for stuff similar to this, you would have to find it hard to believe he would be stupid enough to risk a K.D. disqualify .  He would surely know his horse would get tested after his previous caughts?
animals before people.

A new report is that it is an ointment used for dermatitis which the horse was being treated for.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/may/10/bob-baffert-medina-spirit-kentucky-derby-horse-racing-cancel-culture-disqualification  ;

While I have met one person that knows Baffert and said he is a very nice guy I have to say his image gives me the creeps, all too Tom Slick.  The Fox cancel culture interview is a farce especially given Baffert's track record. The BS on cancel culture for everything - no further comment of a political nature so as not to offend any rabid Trump supporters reading.

Some years ago I saw a list publlished in the IHT of the big US trainers and their drug offences over the previous 10 years. The two with zero offences were both European - Graham Motion (Aninal Kingdom trainer) who started his training career as assistant to Jonathan Pease - the British trainer who was based at Chantilly; and Christophe Clement, the older brother of Chantilly's Nicolas Clement.  I think that does say a lot.  Bill Mott had 1 offence (or 2) was the third cleanest.  Of course 1 or 2 really can be just one horse having an unusually slow rate of metabolising a drug or a one off mistake. Double digits - no way.
I have lived in Silicon valley for 4 years and have no interest whatsoever in US racing - its style is so different to Europe or Australia and nothing positive in my view - especially in treatment of horses and the joke of stewarding these issues here. Time difference allows me to watch OZ racing with help of VPN and that is my Friday evening - especially in COVID.
