Eh, the Williamsā€™ do that. Both of the past 2 WA Derby winners are bred to run all day. They started out in sprints and worked their way up in distance as they got fitter and more mature. IIRC they did the same with Delicacy.

Without wanting to take this thread off track anyone who have looked at the careers of past great horses this has been the pattern for well over a 100 years, it also allowed for the longevity of their racing life with many winning TOP class sprints on the way to middle and 2 mile success at Group level.

Before the European and Japanese second class citizens started taking all our prized stamina races.

Obviously the past 2 Derby winner did not start their careers this late over a sprint trip.

She certainly outclassed that mob.

Wonder how long it will take for her to be up and running over her proper ground ?

Does it matter if she starts short? She ran away and hid from the field in her first out. Looks to me like a trainer who knows how to spot a horse and how to get one ready to go.

Itā€™s not at all the same as a horse who runs at 1100 over and over without success. The really good ones run fast as well as long.

Also itā€™s not just distance, itā€™s learning how to race. Trials help, but theyā€™re not races. Short races let you get the basics down before getting to the work of balancing, settling, and explosive speed in a longer race.

I call this #Australasianism

The very reason our stayers struggle against the Japanese and the Europeans.

Do they use shorter races "to educate" ?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankel_(horse)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldikova Started at a mile, worked up the ladder to 2100m before dropping back

The Ur-example: jumps racing. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thistlecrack
Not only did Thistlecrack start at a short distance (3100m) for chasing, he started on the flat and worked his way up in distance to 3400m over obstacles.

Turning 5 shortly and still hasn’t been beyond the mile.

according the info from the website of German Racing and Breeding Organisation (Deutscher Galopp) Reliable Man returned to the "Röttgen Stud" near Cologne, after a 3 year stay at France. There he covered more than 100 broodmares each season.

Reliable Man has a couple of nice ones in the 2021 Karaka sale:

Full brother to Hypnos   https://www.nzb.co.nz/sales/21kaa/54
Colt from the immediate family of Bonneval   https://www.nzb.co.nz/sales/21kaa/17
Full to SW De La Terre and SP Aalaalune     https://www.nzb.co.nz/sales/21kaa/200
Full sibling to Gr-3 placed filly, half to 2 other SWs from a solidly producing Danehill daughter   https://www.nzb.co.nz/sales/21kaa/314
Full to Melbourne SW/Gr-3 placed colt, 3x winning filly: https://www.nzb.co.nz/sales/21kaa/483
Filly out of a half-sister to the dams of Libertini and My Emotion.  She's in Book 2 so probably has some sort of physical issue, but could be a good horse for someone: https://www.nzb.co.nz/sales/21kbb/679

Hello,
recently "Reliable Man" was mentioned in a topic, but I can't find it at the moment.

In the case, you are interested, he had recently a Groupwinner in Europe.

Ardakan (Reliable Man-Alaskakönigingin by  Sternkönig), bred by the above mentioned Stud, won the "Premio Guido Berardelli" Gr.3, in Italy.
