We had an old friend visit us two days ago. She'd recently toured the USA and spent some time at the scene of Hurricane Katrina.
Would you believe that 17 years later the affected area remains a disaster zone with no reparation whatsoever apart from a couple of streets funded and redeveloped by a couple of movie actors. And little surprise give the victims were almost exclusively black in a Republican run State Government. Thankfully in Australia not even the current "do-nothing" Federal Government led as it is by an "I don't hold a hose" mellifluously empty vessel can ignore the suffering in Lismore and surrounds and hopefully if very tardily act accordingly. |

Yes you have to wonder where the money goes when you hand over donations thinking they will end up in the hands that most need it, not always the case, or not often the case. The recent fundraiser I went to were distributing the funds they made directly to the people, I know it won't go far but would be of some help for basic day to day items for a few. |

Looks like Byron's main street is under water. Hope PT's doing alright. As well as anyone else up there copping it right now.

Yes I heard the CBD was flooded at Byron, hard to believe, and Ballina is copping it badly, highways cut all over the place, don't know how food supplies will go in the coming days? All down the coast are going to be hit.

I doubt we'll 'see' PT around for some weeks He was most surprised to receive my Sat. phone call as local towers had been hit by an arsonist. On top of that, no internet at all or phone unless he goes up the street to a certain spot & his TV went to god in the previous flooding

Hope PT is OK, some much rain over the last day, our town had 431ml, lucky we are on a plateau though it has degraded some bridges and roads, flash flooding etc, a haven for our friends at Lismore and Ballina, so many people in our area open their homes and pantries to those in need. Such wonderful people about when a crisis happens they come out of the woodwork.

Yes hay on the way and a few other things sent up by the ATC, very welcome. I saw some friends last evening that have been working at the evac centre when the first flood came, I had a very restless night after hearing the events that took place and still feel sick to the stomach about what people are going through. Two people at the Evacuation centre took their lives after they lost everything in the floods, one young man said he was going back to try and find his dog but was later found in the shower room cubicle, so very sad and helpless he must have felt. Our friends have a young 20 YO son who in in the ADF stationed at Darwin, a number of them came down to stay at Casino the help with various tasks, this particular young man and another had to go from house to house in Lismore checking on the possibility of persons in their homes, they together found 140 drowned. They had to paint a large D on the doors so that the relevant people could collect the bodies. Apparently they were all face down. Now I wonder how many others wre recovered if these two young men found that many? This has not been out in media circles. The other interesting point made was by Aboriginal people whose families have lived in the area since day dot and the stories passed down revealed that there have been even larger floods in Lismore in times gone by.

That is a wonderful gesture. Sharon Pepper lost all her fencing, round yard, shelters, many thousands of dollars worth. Hard to imagine how high it came at her place to do that. She was very active in the clean up at the local Bowling club, helping the elderly get it happening again. She is a trooper. Her Very pregnant daughter was rescued off her roof in town during the floods also, very lucky. |

no I tend to turn in early and not watch much live tv. Why has nothing been reported of all those deaths gaj. Leaving people in the dark doesn't help turn the sceptics around to having to do something for that town to get them all onto higher ground.

It was confronting to watch, nothing mentioned about the deaths. One of our good friends was interviewed and it was very emotional to see. It is a mystery why people were not given more notice of how bad the rain would be, the system came and just hovered over the catchment for so long. We went to an 80th birthday party yesterday, many of the people were from the local area and were all aware of the many losses of lives, but still no mention in the news. People that live there in the Lismore district know it it is flood prone and are usually prepared, but this was different.

Don't know AA, people are still in shock, I imagine the Gov is quietly taking responsibility for the lack of responders to the area. You can see just by looking at it and how quickly the waters rose up how could everyone be saved. We see catastrophic events overseas on the news but when it is close to home it makes you understand the fragility of life.

The rain just keeps coming in our part of the world. Another rain event of note looks to be coming this way. Since the devastating floods in the Northern Rivers we have had only 15 days in 2 and half months without precipitation. Apart from that only about 5 days of sun. Our district is waterlogged and horrid. We have had multiple people bogged at our place and now have to leave one of our cars without 4WD at the top of our driveway and commute with Mr Deere. Please let us have the sun again, the horses in mud, can't put the in work crew out in the day paddocks, too slippery. Having a big vent I know... But we are not the worst off by far.

Really feel for you and your community GAJ. Down here we've had a few rain-free days every few weeks - but not enough to dry out the mud. Only took about 30mm this week and the ground is totally saturated slop again. With the growing season over, it's going to be a hard winter for a lot of us but even worse for your folk. Hope your weather (and hence your luck) improves soon. PS. I've started buying Norco milk as I heard the company was trashed by your floods but are still supporting their workers. Highly recommend it to people who want milk that tastes like milk!

YES please support Norco, an Australian owned company, totally wiped out their factory in the floods at Lismore, but somehow they are keeping all their staff on the books and paid, God bless them the bottle is half full. The local Macadamia farms which supply 40% of nuts in this country are at a stalemate, the ground is too wet to harvest the nuts, they have had some good years but this one is not looking good.

I hope it does get cold because I got a new cover for my doona which has been in a bag for 20 years, because I would wake up in a muck lather if I ever used it. It needs 7 degrees or lower.

THat's my trouble also tiazolteotl. I go to bed cold and snuggle down and then wake up half way through the night too hot and have to kick everything off. Then can't get back to sleep which isn't the best way to get through the night.
We haven't had any storm water through all this and that started with a plumber before december last year. He's took the rain off the roof away from the house but our lawn is no longer a lawn - just about all mud now. He's says nearly one in two houses they are working on this year has a similar problem and they don't have enough hands on deck to fix the problems. Mind you he hasn't yet billed me for any of this time but when we finally get the problem fixed I'm not looking forward to the bill. I'm over at Mums and they don't have that problem but still the lawn is sodden and you sink in quite deeply. The wind here is a worry also as she has a ghost gum way to close to the house.

Ohhhh, trees are a worry. Ground so wet and all this wind. There is a big gum just across our fence in neighbours paddock and its our house it falls on if it comes down as her house is way the other side. We have ask her can we get rid of it but she wont agree. Gums shouldnt be grown near houses.
