Yes, a freak stayer and would have won or at very least been competitive in the arc.

True... not many races around for a mare like her that wants 2400m, but all the more reason to go to the Arc. If she had gone and won that she would be considered one of the greats.

I think they thought she'd be weighted out of most races with the Tancred basically being the only race for her.
The handicapper proved that wrong over the next few seasons with Makybe Diva.

Her owners were pretty conservative with her. They initially weren't even going to run in the Melbourne Cup. Then when it rained they were considering scratching her. You can't knock them for looking after her but it's so rare to get a horse like her it seems madness to retire them to stud when she's four and dominating the 2400m+ races.

She was a superstar.
I think she had more ability than Makybe Diva. I have no doubt Ethereal, Makybe Diva and Winx were capable of winning Arcs. Hopefully Verry Elleegant is given her chance.

Ethereal. Picture: Racing Photos Ethereal and the Arc that got awayAndrew Eddy@fastisheddy 1:20pm Springtime in Melbourne always spurs glorious memories for the trailblazer Sheila Laxon. Her heart starts racing and her spine tingles when she thinks of Ethereal and those great bursts of finishing speed she produced nearly two decades ago to create Australasian racing history. Such intoxicating emotions were rekindled just a few months later in 2002 when Ethereal went to test her greatness earned in those two Melbourne spring handicaps in the Tancred Stakes (then called the BMW) at weight-for-age at Rosehill. Little did Laxon know before the race what she was about to see and what she was about to feel in the ensuing weeks and months. The 2002 Tancred Stakes was to be Ethereal last race and it was a race that, in some respects at least, trumped even her dual Cups triumph of the previous spring. The mare would put in a run at Rosehill that day that what prove, in hindsight, to be the grandest of finales. Right up there with Makybe Diva’s some four years later when she claimed her third Melbourne Cup and was retired moments later. Laxon said this week that she believed Ethereal’s Tancred win in 2002 was ultimately the best of her career. It was not just because of the extraordinary manner in which the then four-year-old won the race, but also because the racing world would never see her do it again. So, included in those range of emotions Laxon feels when she thinks of the great mare and her BMW win, is an overwhelming one of what could have been. “Peter Vela (owner and breeder) said before the race (Tancred) that if she wins that she can go for the Arc (Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe), but then he changed his mind and decided to retire her,” Laxon recalled from her training base on the Sunshine Coast. “I think if he had his time again it would have been very different because the horse that ran seventh in the Melbourne Cup behind her and beaten quite a long way was Marienbard and he went and won the Arc, so that truly would have been a fairytale ending.” Ethereal beat Marienbard nine lengths in the Melbourne Cup and nearly 11 months later as she began her career as a broodmare, Marienbard held off the top Irish galloper Sulamani (who won features on three continents) as well as the champion derby winner High Chaparral in one of the world’s great horse races over 2400 metres at Longchamp. Ethereal never got to Paris, but of all the Australasian mares (with the exception of Winx) to have been eligible for it, she may well have had the best chance of winning it. Ethereal was an extraordinary stayer and a most underrated one. The Kiwi mare only went beyond 2000 metres four times in her life and she won them all at group 1 level. She came to notice in 2001 when, in just her second run in Australia, she stormed to victory in the Queensland Oaks (2400m) from 10th on the home turn before that spring she held off a late-charging Sky Heights to win the Caulfield Cup (2400m). Just 17 days later she produced that mesmerising final sprint out in the middle of a sodden Flemington track to chase down and ultimately deny Give The Slip the Melbourne Cup (3200m). Then, after a few lead-up runs in Melbourne, came the Tancred (2400m) in the autumn. “It was an amazing win,” Laxon gushed of the mare’s 21st and final run. “That for me was her best win because she came from an absolutely impossible situation. “She was buried away for a run and she had Universal Prince on her outside and she had to wait and then come around him and to beat him was phenomenal. “I could watch that win over and over again and never get tired of it.” Laxon was born in Wales but grew up in England where she was a champion junior showjumper. She then moved to New Zealand as a rider where she married trainer Laurie Laxon. She later went out her own as a trainer, where she will be forever credited with officially being the first woman to train a Melbourne Cup winner. Instead of chasing the Arc, Ethereal retired to the breeding barn with a record of 21 starts for eight wins and more than $4.7 million in stakes. But she never quite reached similar heights as a mum. From 12 foals, nine were named and while some enjoyed multiple success, only listed winner Seraphim earned black type. These days, Laxon trains with John Symons on the Sunshine Coast and while she is dealing with lesser quality gallopers than to her champion of 20 years ago, she never gives up hope of finding another Ethereal. “I dare say I won’t, but I’ll still keep looking,” she said. |

Her son IMPERIUM is 2nd favourite for the 3200m NZ Cup today.
ETHEREAL herself turned 20 on Thursday, she was foaled 16th Nov 1997. Would nice to see one of her offspring win a black type race, particularly one over 3200m |

Hallo,
Regarding Habibti, her Grandson Morshdi (Slip Anchor - Reem Albaraari by Sadlers Wells) won the Derby Italiano, Grosser Preis v. Baden Gr. 1 (Germany) , 2. Irish Derby Gr. 1, 3. Newmarket Stakes
He was purchased for the German Stud Friedrichsruh, unfortunately he turned out as infertile. He was gelded and was later sent to Dubai, returning back to racing, according my informations
Regards from Germany,
Ticino

I think she would go well with Street Boss.
reasons being: Etheral has:
Swaps - related to Iron Liege
Khaled - Blushing Groom
Turn-To - My Babu
Northern Dance - Halo and Machiavellian
Wilkes - Worden (a bit further back)
but unlikey to go due to not being commercial enough

In the case of Habibti, we should note that her pedigree featured a cross of Sun Princess. Eight Caat's best progeny featured a similar cross.
It is hard to assess the success of a broodmare when we do not consider the mates that she has had.

Habibti left 2 maiden winners from 10 to race (I've just researched her for a story!) but two of her daughters left stakes winners; one the Italian Derby winner you are thinking of and the other a Gr2 or 3 winner in NZ.
An interesting case, given that her useless half sister was so good at stud. You'd expect the much better racehorse with the better sire (who turned into a decent broodmare sire) to be the better broodmare. not the slow hack by the handicapper! :D Breeding - it's the art that keeps us all guessing... |

Even Habibti has done a resonable job hasn't she ?
She was certainly a slow starter but I think she finished with an Italian Derby winner and plenty of quality broodmare daughters ?

I think it's mostly perception and hype - people generally expect too much from their champions. But for every Habibti, there are plenty of Personal Ensign, Dahlia, Tracy's Element....

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to buy any of Ethereal's progeny on face value(subject to seeing them) not many Champion mares go on to be champion broodmares and their progeny is usually grossly over valued in the yearling ring anyway, I believe most Champion mares I have seen are too masculine(the very thing that makes them champions on the track) to make good mothers, just if she was mine I would be breeding like to like and there has never been a better sire of stayers than Zabeel,

don't get me wrong JP, you could get a very good horse but the cross would be dangerous in my opinion. Whatever Zabeel was as a racehorse, the fact is he gets mainly staying types and not many Melbourne cup winning mares have golden slipper winning progeny. You may get a Cox Plate horse or you may get a champion hurdler but then i guess breeding these two you would not be heading for the Blue Diamond.

Zabeel has had quite a few who couldn't stay, I am no breeding buff and don't pretend to be, it's just observation, Peruzzi was overall quite disappointing she never lived up to her promise, they thought when she was a good sprinter because she was by Zabeel that she would be even better over ground and she wasn't she was at best a Gr3 sprinter, Don Eduardo won the Derby but from memory it wasn't a vintage Derby and he is the sire of Swift alliance isn't he? not sure of SA's female line but doubt there would be much stamina there and Don Eduardo is no Zabeel!!
....anyway there are exceptions to every rule

I remember peruzzi was a speed machine, and don eduano has a pretty good sprinter so anything can happen
However in the end I agree it's best to breed like to like. |

Well shiner if you split the genes and try to put speed into a stayers pedigree you usually get a horse who can't stay but is too slow to win at sprint distances either, better to strengthen the good genes than try to take pot luck and mix them up,
Kinda like cutting a holden and ford in halves and joining them together ie the front of a holden and the back of a Ford or vice versa you will not have the best of both it is a lot more likely to inherit the worst characteristics of both and finish up with something to slow to be any good for anything Bloody silly Gerry Harvey must have sent twenty or more Danehill mares to Zabeel and none of them can stay, and not fast enough to win over sprint distances either, they are restricted to 1800/1900 as their min/max distance the best are Landlocked and Zagrub another is Slacksmith If you are going to send a sprint mare to a sire like Zabeel best it have weak genes so Zabeel's genes can dominate the union |

Zabeel was an oustanding miler.
Ethereal was a highclass racemare. You have more chance of getting a 4000m plodder from breeding 2 1200m maiden class gallopers. |
