Hello to our astute pedigree people, and thinking maybe Take2 is over the scanning by now, but on the off chance he is not... I have a friend going to NZ tomorrow to inspect some yearlings for clients overseas, so I mentioned we have some great knowledge here on the forum and if anyone felt inclined to share some views on possible stars in Book 2 it would be most appreciated.

Hi GAJ.
I'd be looking at lots by young Snitzel sire Sword of State. He was a star 2yo in NZ and has already sired a first crop stakes winner this season in Australia. Lot 633 stands out on pedigree however there's a number of others that come up pretty well.

And one out of left field, Lot 579. Young Invincible Spirit stallion, oldest 3 and sire of a last start stakes-winner in NZ. Lovely female family, and the dam has produced a Listed winner since the catalogue was printed.
Real miler/middle distance/stayer aptitude.

And lastly Lot 675 by Super Seth and first foal of a stakes-winning Sebring mare. Won't be cheap however.

Well maybe he simply doesn't know how to walk, however he's clearly throwing a leg far more recently than has yours truly.

Sent a text to Trent Busuttin re Lot 579. He replied with " Will have a good look and refer back when I've seen him mate".

Ok will be interesting, hind movement also seen not ideal, but the old clydes were always close behind and it gave them strength.

About a week ago I analysed the 1.009 sales lots at Karaka.
I correspond by e-mail with an Australian and on 31st December he asked my opinion. He had a short list of nine, my list was 17, and we matched on only one. After reviewing the two lists I e-mailed on 4th January a short list of six with another six possibles. I live in Ireland. |

Not sure sure of the "astute" part Gaj, maybe opinionated, I never had a look at NZ this year, (first time in a while) however, if I was off to NZ now, with the dearth of "Good" staying types in oz, and seeing as how the kiwis have a fixation of rubbing our noses re that fact come cup time, I would be checking out all the middle distance staying type pedigrees, and having a good look at them. Trouble with that is, it requires patience, which few have, as Bart often lamented, just finished Classic sale, now waiting on Adelaide, will throw my hat in the ring after I have a look

One thing I've particularly noticed when playing videos of some in Karaka 2 is that the majority aren't pumped up like many yearlings being offered in Oz, which means you can better see the lot for what he or she actually is and ultimately might need in a be developmental sense.
A case in point is Lot 675 which GAJ had reservations about. Possible conformational/movement faults aside, imo he looks entirely unlike he might have done if reared and offered in Australia. Dare I say it, he even exhibits ribs in his walk through.

True, SC, Do you think sometimes in Australian studs when these faults in youngters are apparent at an early stage the farrier intervenes, albeit for the sale ring no doubt, not to mention spit and polish and as you say a pumped appearance can detract from the structure in some. Nature made them that way and they learn to live with their faults and grow to compensate, but hoof issues are a different story.

I wrote that one other year SC, it's very noticeable & I would think, helpful to the youngsters going forward.

Hi Glencoe, He surely is a nice type and moves well too, the better informed would be best to critique his pedigree. I like to The Autumn Suns, have had two here at the farm and both have great natures. I am told they don't race well as colts, but when gelded go well. But have not done the sums on that info.

Just had a look at the first 100 lots, and have a few I like on type/looks. Lot 77 a filly Colts 24,30,71,76,78 and 94. (94 was a bit upright in the pasterns but still had so much to like.) The Proisirs in general were nice types and Satono Aladdin had many that looked nice too. |

77 okay but lack of heel in front?
64 excellent but why do they present on grass? 78 another terrific type but rear heels this time? 94 just like his half-brother Grunt. 10th foal but you wouldn't know it.

Yes you can find things to pick at on most, but just the overall impression of balance and quality is what I was seeing in these.

Evaluation's a very personal thing of course.
For better or worse I for one seem to automatically look for possible faults (particularly feet) rather than overall strengths, which is why I almost always seek a second opinion and then realize I perhaps couldn't see the wood for the trees.

Tuxedo from the mare Ball Gown won at Gp3 level in NZ today and looked up his pedigree to see he was by a son of High Chaparral from the most quintessential of bottom line sires, ie O'Reilly, Savabeel, Pins, Pompeii Court and Battle Wagon respectively! So looked to see if Ball Gown had one in at Karaka and sure enough she did, interestingly this time by Super Seth, a grandson of High Chaparral. And almost needless to say a Zabeel cross top and bottom with this one. Have a look and see what you think, though it's annoying there's only side-on video. |
