Monaco Consul and Divine Rebel are both progressing well, will both aim for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
Marheta is being aimed at the Myer Classic, through the mares races. Edited by Gay3 - 27 Feb 2025 at 1:07pm |

Moroney looking for second Melbourne CupTen years after the success of Brew in the Melbourne Cup, trainer Michael Moroney is hopeful of picking up a second Melbourne Cup – and perhaps his first Caulfield Cup along the way. Moroney has VRC Derby winner Monaco Consul and dual Sydney Cup runner up Divine Rebel heading towards the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Racing manager for Ballymore Stables, Anthony Feroce, told Just Horse Racing that plans had not been made for lead up races to the Cups. However, Monaco Consul will be resuming in Melbourne – most likely in the Liston Stakes (1400m) on August 14. Monaco Consul impressed racegoers with a dominant victory in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick last October, before recording a dour win in the Victoria Derby (2500m). In the autumn, the High Chaparral colt seemed to lose form but a return to Australia saw him record two Group 1 thirds, in the AJC Derby (2400m) and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m). His dour runs in the VRC and AJC Derbies suggests that the 3200m of the Melbourne Cup should prove no issue to the galloper. Divine Rebel showed her liking for 3200m with her second consecutive placing in the Sydney Cup in April. She was second to the John O’Shea trained Jessicabeel. In 2009, she was second to Melbourne galloper Ista Kareem. Moroney’s smart mare Marheta, second in this year’s Queensland Oaks, will be kept to mares races and will target the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Derby Day. Written by Andrew Hawkins |

Interesting news - Monaco Consul is going to head to the 2011 Prix De L'Arc De Triomphe if he runs well in the spring - I'm presuming well would mean at least placing, if not winning, a G1 race.

Yeah I need to see him run well first andy but I did think Xcellent had been flattened by his 3yo year and he came out and ran well in the big one.
I still think he is a 2000m horse and he would be a sensational Turnbull, Cox, Mackinnon horse but hey the trainer knows what he is doing.

Good effort by the Australian-trained Sound to run 2nd in the G1 Auckland Cup at 3200m in New Zealand.

CHAPADA's 3rd in the G1 Turnbull on Saturday may have been an indicator the stable was on the up.

Crikey, her form, jockey & breeding certainly didn't warrant that price but I guess it's what happens with a stable out of form combined with an odds on fav.

Hours before the first 10 horses into the 2022 All-Star Mile field are announced, Michael Moroney is plotting the path for an entrant from left field. Moroney is the new trainer of Bankers Choice, a rapid improver who has won five of his past six starts in New Zealand for Cambridge-based trainer Stephen Marsh. "The owners have retained a share in him but we've bought the majority of him, we have bought him mainly for Australians but there was 20 per cent sold to New Zealanders as well," Moroney said. Bankers Choice will fly into Melbourne on Wednesday, February 23, with Moroney anticipating his Australian debut days later. "Stephen Marsh will look after him until then (the flight) and send him over and then I'll give him one gallop and then probably run him because I'm keen on running him in the Blamey Stakes, which is a ticket into The All-Star Mile," Moroney said. The $300,000 G2 TAB Blamey Stakes (1600m) will be held at Flemington on March 5, two weeks before the $5m All-Star Mile over the same course. All is not lost for Moroney and connections if Bankers Choice can't force his way into The All-Star Mile field at late notice. "I would think the Doncaster Mile would fit him as well because that race is a handicap as opposed to The All-Star Mile, which is weight-for-age," Moroney said. Ross and Corrine Kearney bred and raced Bankers Choice under their Okaharau Station banner and their four-year-old gelding had attracted plenty of interest from Australian buyers prior to the deal being struck with Moroney and stable clients. Bankers Choice is from the first crop of Windsor Park Stud stallion Mongolian Khan and became the first Stakes winner for the Caulfield Cup and multiple Derby winner in claiming last month's G3 Anniversary Handicap (1600m) at Trentham. The runner-up in the Anniversary Handicap on January 15 was Coventina Bay, who then won at G1 level for the first time in last Saturday's NZ$400,000 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m). "Since we bought that form has been franked with Covertina Bay doing what she did. I know that he (Bankers Choice) had a fair pull in the weights (7kg) against Covertina Bay but she ran Avantage to within a neck last autumn, so she's well up to what we've seen in Australia, we've got a guide on that form," Moroney said. "Bankers Choice beat two very good horses at Te Rapa (three starts ago), which included one of ours (Dragon Queen), which came out and won a Group 2 two starts later. "I think his formlines are strong, he looks a really nice horse, very promising and a good addition to the stable." |

I enquired to buy a filly that was beaten by him in trial in late 2020. It didnt proceed - however when I enquired I was told that it will cost u a fair bit as the owners of the winner (Bankers Choice) have already knocked back $750k.....
This must have cost them a fair bit as he was still a maiden then. Rate him highly & believe he could become aa C Cup horse

Aussie mission for Roch 'N' Horse Smart sprinter Roch 'N' Horse will take aim at Group One assignments in Australia and will transfer to Michael Moroney’s Flemington barn later this month. The daughter of Per Incanto has raced out of Moroney and training partner Pam Gerard’s Matamata stable with good effect, with three wins and four placings to her name from just 12 starts. The progressive five-year-old went within a whisker of beating Levante when second in the Gr.1 Telegraph (1200m) at her most recent start at Trentham in mid-January and is being considered for a tilt at the Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 26. “She is going to come over on February 23. Unfortunately the planes to Melbourne out of New Zealand have been held up a little bit because of delays caused by Chinese New Year,” Moroney said. “The one that comes to Melbourne originates in Singapore and that is the earliest we could get her over. “We have got her in the Oakleigh Plate but we are not 100 percent sure we are going to run in that. We will just see how she travels. “The other thought pattern is we give her a trial up the straight (at Flemington) on the Friday and go straight to the Newmarket (Gr.1, 1200m) on March 12. “Then we would probably give her a bit of a freshen and head to the Sangster (Gr.1, 1200m) and the Goodwood (Gr.1, 1200m) in Adelaide. “They would be the three or four possible races for her.” Moroney has respect for the quality of sprinter in New Zealand at present, headed by top mares Levante and Entriviere, who ran 1-2 in Saturday’s Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m). “From what I have seen, I think the sprinters in New Zealand have been reasonably good this year,” he said. “There are so many sprint races on here in Australia, they are going to be reasonably spread and in the handicaps Roch 'N' Horse gets in quite well. “I think she will be pretty competitive over here in those sort of races.” Moroney said the feedback from the Matamata stable was Roch 'N' Horse, who races in the colours of breeders Little Avondale Stud, had taken a week to get over her Trentham exertions. “She has bounced back really well now, and she was having her first bit of fast work this morning (Tuesday).” Moroney and Gerard had also considered sending promising three-year-old Sassy Merlot across the Tasman for the Gr.2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) but weren’t prepared to take the risk of gaining a start. “We were just worried we would get on a plane and come all the way over and that is the main race for her because she is good over 1400m and if you miss the field then you are in no man’s land a bit,” Moroney said. “We decided there are more options for her in New Zealand. She hasn’t won a stakes race yet so we decided we would like to try and do that.” A well-held second in the Gr.3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) behind exciting filly La Crique, Sassy Merlot will step out in the Listed Mufhasa FastTrack Stakes (1400m) at Ellerslie on March 5. Meanwhile, Moroney was delighted with the manner in which four-time Group One winner Tofane had come through her win in the Gr.1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday. “She came out for a trot and canter this morning. She looked well. She has been pretty bouncy,” he said. “We are safely through the first bit, she has eaten well and done everything right. At this stage, all going well, we will forge onto the Futurity (Gr.1, 1400m).” – NZ Racing Desk |

Moroney 'making good progress'Trainer Mike Moroney is ‘making good progress in hospital’, his stable has confirmed. Ballymore Stables released a statement on Thursday updating the industry on Moroney’s health after he was hospitalised with acute pneumonia and a collapsed lung. "Michael's breathing is still assisted by a ventilator and he is undergoing physiotherapy and treatment for that,” the statement read. “He is communicating with the teams at Ballymore Stables' Flemington and Matamata bases, discussing racing and training programs. “Michael and the team are most grateful for the numerous well wishes received from all corners of the globe over the past fortnight and also for the continuing support from clients, family and friends. The videos sent have been well received and have provided a great tonic.” The stable has continued to train winners despite Moroney being in hospital, with War Machine claiming the Bendigo Guineas. Sassy Merlot took out the Easter Stakes in New Zealand as well. “We would also like to thank the staff at Ballymore Stables, in particular Flemington Assistant Trainer Glen Thompson, Racing Manager Anthony Feroce and Training Partner Pam Gerard in New Zealand for keeping the stables running like clockwork and continuing the excellent season Ballymore is experiencing on both sides of the Tasman,” the statement read. “Both stables are currently lying in 10th place on their respective Melbourne metropolitan and New Zealand seasonal premierships and have produced six wins during Michael's enforced absence. “Michael has been receiving regular video updates on the horses and is excited to be back at the track and races soon. In the meantime, he is doing a great job promoting racing, turning his medical team into racing fans by encouraging them to watch the Ballymore runners.” |

Racing mourning Mike MoroneyAustralasian racing is in a prolonged state of mourning following the news that one of its finest ambassadors, Mike Moroney, has passed away. For while there have been trainers to have prepared more winners and others who have toiled for longer, few, if any, have been as popular or admired as the New Zealand-born horseman, who would proudly call himself a true Australasian upon opening up stables in Australia shortly before the turn of the century. Moroney, who trained 2000 Melbourne Cup winner Brew among his 54 other Group 1 victories, passed away in his sleep on Thursday morning. Racing was always in his blood, as Moroney's grandparents bred the 50/1 1960 Melbourne Cup winner Hi Jinx. His own racing journey beginning in earnest in his hometown of Matamata in New Zealand about 12 years later. As a 16-year-old, he began working for legendary NZ trainer Dave O'Sullivan, with whom he ultimately enjoyed a training partnership before taking out his own trainer's licence in 1982. Moroney's links with the O'Sullivan yard would continue through his career as he would ultimately win the Melbourne Cup with Brew, whose mother was O'Sullivan's ground-breaking 1989 Japan Cup winner Horlicks. O'Sullivan's son Paul was the original trainer of Brew, before a failed sale to Asia saw him snapped up by Moroney on behalf of clients. A few years earlier, Moroney had tried to get a foothold into Australian racing on the back of Asian investment in the early 1990s, but eventually settled on an Adelaide stable to complement his Matamata stable in New Zealand. Within two years, he was offered up to 70 boxes at Flemington and Moroney, who won his first Flemington feature in 1997 when Second Coming took the Victoria Derby, jumped at the chance to train at Headquarters and from the historic Chicquita Lodge stables. His final star galloper was four-time G1 winner Tofane, who Moroney ranked among the very best he had trained. "She's right up there within the top four," Moroney told Racing.com's The Wrap in February 2022. "I've always said Xcellent's the best horse I've trained and another good mare called Happyandunoit, who ended up in the States, won three of four Group 1s there." Pentire gelding Xcellent only raced 13 times for eight wins, including races like the New Zealand Derby. Possibly his best performance came in Makybe Diva's third Melbourne Cup in 2005 when he came from near last to finish third. Happyandunoit, who was by Australian stallion Yachtie, won three of her only four races for Moroney in Australasia late last century before she was sold to the US. She ultimately won six races there, including three at G1 level before she was retired in 2001. Other great horses he would train were Victoria Derby winner Second Coming, Thousand Guineas winner Shizu, dual Zipping Classic winner Sound and the likes of Geelong Cup winner Emissary, who ran second in the 2022 Melbourne Cup. The 2022 Spring Carnival was also notable for Moroney for the G1 Champions Sprint boilover victory of Kiwi mare Roch 'N' Horse, who, at $21, nosed out $1.75 favourite and world's leading sprinter at the time Nature Strip. Moroney's last Group winner came just last Saturday on Blue Diamond Day when Coeur Volante took out the Mannerism Stakes. |

Tributes have flowed for champion trainer Mike Moroney following his sudden death on Thursday. The New Zealand native was remembered as a 'wonderful father and very proud grandfather' in a statement released by Ballymore Stables confirming Moroney's passing. "One of the stalwarts of New Zealand and Victorian racing, Michael not only had a special knack with horses, but with people," the statement read. "He was loved and respected by his staff, his owners, his beloved partner Karen and his family. He will be remembered for his kindness, his willingness to share his time, expertise and his passion for the sport of horse racing. "He was a wonderful father and very proud grandfather, a member of a tight-knit family and circle of friends. He was a much-loved member of the racing community and an outstanding conditioner of horses with a host of Group 1 wins, premierships and well-deserved awards. "It is fitting that Ballymore's base has been Chicquita Lodge; it is part of the fabric of Melbourne racing history as is Michael with the stable's blue, black and red silks carried to victory in so many major races. "Michael's family thank everyone for their support during this difficult time. Ballymore Stables will continue with normal racing operations under the expert guidance of Glen Thompson and Anthony Feroce." Moroney's brother and respected bloodstock agent Paul said: "Rest in peace brother. You left us too soon. I will never forget the bond and times we had as brothers both in life and our chosen passion and professions. Love you forever." Country Racing Victory and the Australian Trainers’ Association also both released statements mourning Moroney. “The ATA is deeply saddened to hear the passing of Mike Moroney. Not only a brilliant horse trainer, but he an incredible person who was willing to help others out at any time. Mike made a lasting impact and will be sadly missed to racing. Our thoughts go out to his family,” the ATA statement read. Former legendary race caller Bryan Martin said: "Good man, elite trainer. Very sadly missed, condolences to his family and friends." Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Gai Waterhouse said: "With great sadness, Adrian and I send our condolences to the family of the late Mike Moroney, who passed away today. A great man and trainer loved by all." Leading jockey Jamie Melham said: "He was a fantastic trainer and person and an absolute gentleman." The Melbourne Racing Club said: “Today, we've lost one of our sport's finest ambassadors. Our thoughts are with Michael's family and friends”. |

Very sad today as he was one of my favorite trainers
In his interviews he was always up front, no nonsense, and he was magic with a stayer. A bit like Bart in that he did not care about stats and his RTI, but setting a horse for a particular race. We have lost a good one! My sincere condolences to his family and friends!
