Seven instances of a Slipper winner in his 1st 4 removes Heart

Hiding in Plain Sight!

Tara Madgwick - Sunday March 22

When Guest House headed to the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in the Newgate Farm draft in 2025, he was a nice colt, but certainly nothing special, a solid middle of the road fellow, but in winning the Golden Slipper he’s shot to the top of the class, so let’s take a closer look at what the stallion syndicates failed to see.

Newgate were the leading vendor by aggregate at Magic Millions 2025 selling 53 yearlings for $18,575,000 with a top price in their draft of $1.7million for a Snitzel colt from Fashion Faux Pas (USA).

The average price for yearling sold in their draft was $350,472, which tells you pretty much where Guest House fit into their picture given he sold for $270,000.

22 yearlings in that draft sold for less than him and 30 sold for more.

Guest House sold for $270,000 at Magic Millions.

Looking at the picture from a Home Affairs perspective, the Coolmore young gun sired the sale-topper at the Gold Coast when his filly from Sunlight made $3.2million and he had 47 yearlings in total average $383,298.

Again, Guest House fit somewhere just south of the middle and if you click on this link you can see the full list of Home Affairs yearlings sold at MM 2025 with images, so you can see what average looked like as opposed to expensive.

He was purchased by Mick Price Racing & Breeding Pty Ltd/Roll The Dice Racing/Rogers Bloodstock and has now banked $3.3million his big ownership group.

On the pedigree front, Guest House was also somewhere in the middle being the sixth foal of Flamboyant Lass, a very fast Group placed daughter of Golden Slipper winning sire Stratum from an old Gooree Stud family.

At the time of the sale she had five foals to race for three winners and now she is six for six, although Guest House is her first stakes-winner.

Back in the day, Mr Cojuangco made a habit of bringing out mares from North America to add to his Aussie broodmare band at Gooree Stud and one of those was Palm Beach Deb (USA), who smashed it out of the park when her ninth foal was Tempest Morn.

A tiny chestnut with the heart of a tiger, she won the Group I SAJC Australasian Oaks and STC Ansett Australia Stakes (now the Vinery) and was also second in the G1 AJC Australian Oaks, Queensland Derby, Queensland Oaks and  South Australian Oaks.

The third dam of Guest House is Vain Deb, a useless half-sister by Golden Slipper winner Vain to Tempest Morn that duly made her mark at stud producing six winners headed by the classy G3 winner Pasikatera.

These names are all dear to my heart given they were trained by Gai Waterhouse during the era when I was a part of that team and there was a morning that still sticks in my mind all these years later.

I went out to gallop Tempest Morn on the course proper during that memorable autumn when she was a superstar and thought to myself, this job does not get any better than this!

Here we are 25 years later and this family has smashed it out of the park again with a colt whose pedigree is packed with Golden Slipper influences.

Guest House has a double cross of Golden Slipper winning sires Vain and Canny Lad and we can also throw in three more Slipper winning sires Stratum, Flying Spur and Luskin Star to the mix.

He also has a 4 x 4 double cross of Danehill, who sired a Golden Slipper winner in each of this first three crops – Danzero, Flying Spur and Merlene – and then added two more in Catbird and Ha Ha.

Every racing nation has an iconic race for the breeding purist and the winner of the race invariably has a pedigree offering a history lesson in past winners and while the UK has the Epsom Derby and the USA has their Kentucky Derby, for Australia it is undoubtedly the Golden Slipper.

It takes a wise man a lifetime to grow a tree and a fool five minutes to kill one.

How far can this boy go?

He looks like he hasn't yet tapped the full potential of his abilities.  Very scopey and if you trust my eyes he looks a guineas horse.  But at the same time, he is a big, strong 2yo and he will have plenty coming up behind who may eclipse him.

Flash in the pan, or great 3yo?

I would love to know what the knowledge here sees.

His pedigree suggests optimum distances at Group 1 level of 1200-1400m, and 1600m only is class rather than breeding gets him there.

And though Mick Price is an extremely successful trainer, as a general rule not many of his train on beyond their 3yo days, and for the most part his superior horses produce over sprint distances at 2 and 3.  Not much has changed since Michael Kent came on board.

So it remains to be seen if they initially aim for the Guineas next Spring or more likely target the Everest and/or Coolmore.  Perhaps we'll know more if he runs in the Sires Produce.

Mick has already said they will target the Coolmore, no shock there.  They are considering the Sires depending on how he pulls up.

Question wasn't so much about whether he would get out in distance too much (probably phrased incorrectly, also mentioning Guineas), it was more a question of whether the smart folk here think he can go on with it at 3.

This crop seems pretty weak to the eye but he does seem progressive. Hard to say if he will be competitive in the spring as I suspect there will be a lot of ones will establish themselves later in their 2yo season that maybe haven't had a start yet.

Yes he's by Home Affairs, who is by I Am Invincible.

Now to the question of training on.

If IAI is any guide, that sire has about eight performed sons at stud.  Five didn't train on at 3.  Two didn't train on as Autumn 3yo's, and only one trained on as a 3yo and beyond (Hellbent).  Home affairs is one of those who performed as a Spring 3yo but he failed miserably as an Autumn and Winter 3yo.

So if the above is any guide, Guest House might well train on as a Spring 3yo but would have to break the mould to perform beyond 2026.  Though there's always exceptions to the general rule.

The trend continues: Vinrock the IAI colt is suddenly retired to stud after apparently failing to come up as an Autumn 3yo.

Yes but thats I Am Invincible, not home Affairs.

Plus I also believe these front running 2yo types are often not that good, rather they just have a bit more race smarts and ability to settle. See it quite often that the ones that train on are those ones, but not always.

Home Affairs beat nature Strip in a lightning in the Autumn. What more could you expect. Nothing went right dor nature Strip that day admittedly and he shouldve won but he still beat Eduardo handily even if you ignore nature Strip.

With a huge weight advantage in late Summer.  How about the Newmarket Hcp and UK disasters?

He was asked to carry 56.5 as a 3yo, he deserves some relief from criticism for that, not sure on the UK but perhaps he didn't handle the travel?

He was barely a 1200m horse. Asking him to run up a hill at ascot was always too much. Artorius was far better suited to that. He shouldve been in thr 1000m race.

Our horses have all had to carry weight over there Afros.  But as I posted in the wrong thread.  Hellbent just got the HK Derby winner so I might yet eat my words on sons of I am Invincible having distance issues!

Coolmore rolls $30 million dice and buys Golden Slipper winner Guest House

Coolmore has bought Golden Slipper-winning colt Guest House in a quickfire sale worth tens of millions of dollars, less than a week after the colt’s career-defining Group 1 victory.

A son of Coolmore’s resident stallion Home Affairs, whose champion first season sire status appears certain after his maiden Group 1 win, Guest House will be raced by the Australian arm of the international breeding giant after a deal was reached late on Thursday.

The existing owners of the Mick Price and Mick Kent Jnr-trained Guest House, headed by syndicator Roll The Dice Racing, will remain as members of the new partnership overseen by Coolmore.

Guest House will continue to race in Roll The Dice’s royal blue, red dice and seamed colours under the terms of the deal.

Good on Roll the Dice, they played the game and won big time.

I'm sure that will pay for a few more yearlings and training fees.
