Bucketing down here. I had to close the balcony door as it was splashing in so badly. We called off my birthday dinner as I didn't want to drive in it.

When my cousin Bill finally married, at a late age, he inherited three grown up children. He invited us to meet them and told them that we were all teetotal.

About an hour into the meet and greet, the eldest daughter came over and told my brother: "I nearly didn't come when Bill said you were teetotal. I thought you had to be wowsers. I'm now glad I did come. You lot are the funniest, most irreverent bunch of nutcases on the planet."

You see, SC, you don't need alcohol to have fun. Just a good sense of humour.

My mother was teetotal, my father was a six-o'clock drunk. Get as much beer in the body before the pubs closed at six...then go home, smack the wife and take over the television, even if the kids are watching Disneyland. I will add that he never hit us kids.

Now...you have a choice which one you want to be like as you grow up. We all chose to be like her.

The next door neighbours had the same problem. Two of the three kids decided not to drink. The oldest one followed in dad's footsteps. I used to hear them come home, get into the drink and then you'd hear them getting ill a few hours later. A wonderful example of what not to do with your life.

It was par for the course in those days. A lot of fathers drank heavily after work. A lot of wives suffered.
