The $3000 stallion behind Melbourne Cup favourite Half YoursThe chances of one among six named foals born in that season sired by a $3000 stallion becoming the 13th horse to do the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup doubles lies somewhere in between the unlikely and the impossible. Maybe so, but just don't call it a fluke. At least not while Grant Dwyer is around. Dwyer's role in the Half Yours story doesn't get as much attention as a Tony or Calvin McEvoy or Jamie Melham do but quite simply, there wouldn't be a Half Yours without him. He was there where it happened, so to speak. "I was holding the stallion while he covered the mare,'' Dwyer said. The stallion Dwyer was holding was St Jean who stands by arrangement at Grant and wife Joanne's Brackley Park Stud at Avenel, 110km north of Melbourne. St Jean took up residency at the Dwyer's farm in 2017. He served 27 mares at a service fee of $3300. After that first season, St Jean's book fluctuated, mostly in a downwards direction, hitting 21 in 2019 and as low as five in 2024. "It's been very unfortunate that either the Victorian breeding industry didn't see what I saw in the pedigree, or they didn't want to breed stayers,'' Dwyer said. "And up until now, he'd had only served mares owned by breeders who purely wanted to race the progeny. "There has never been a yearling sold by this horse." And now with the rise and rise of Half Yours, St Jean has won over his share of converts. But Dwyer, well, he's more of a disciple, a true believer. "I always had faith that the horse would throw something good,'' he said. "I saw things in the pedigree I really liked." The fact that he was a Sadler's Wells line stallion via Galileo and his son Teofilo for one. Or that Teofilo, as Dwyer pointed out, has sired three Melbourne Cup winners, Cross Counter, Twilight Payment and Without A Fight. Then there is St Jean's dam line. "His third dam is Height Of Fashion who was owned by The Queen,'' Dwyer said. "And when she went to stud, she produced Nashwan who won the English Derby so I knew St Jean should breed staying horses." As well-bred as he is, St Jean was also a talented racehorse in his day, both at home and abroad. "He won his maiden by 16 lengths over 2400m in Ireland," Dwyer said. "He won some races here in Australia in really impressive style and was actually an early favourite for the Caulfield Cup but unfortunately he bowed his tendon." St Jean resurfaced in New Zealand in a Group 3 at Ellerslie, ironically on the same day as Almandin won the Melbourne Cup in 2016. St Jean was beaten that time but managed to win the City Of Auckland Cup on New Year's Day 2017 and was elevated to Auckland Cup favouritism only to break down again, this time, for the last time, post his Avondale Cup farewell. It has taken St Jean five seasons to deliver on what Dwyer had almost stubbornly forecast, but some stallions, many of them priced well above what St Jean, never deliver at all. What a satisfying feeling it must have been for Dwyer, present on Caulfield Cup day, when Half Yours burst away from the pack to win one of the great races on the world calendar. "It's unbelievable how you feel,'' he said. "This horse (Half Yours), on that day, is basically changing our whole business around. "We have struggled along. We have been standing stallions at the low end of the market for 22 years – you wouldn't know how good it was to watch that horse win." Dwyer, a Collins St stockbroker-turned-studmaster, says that since the Caulfield Cup the phone has been ringing and we are getting more bookings. "After the Naturalism win, which Half Yours won quite well we put St Jean's fee up to $10,000 plus GST, which is still a very, very cheap service fee for a stallion that has proven that he can get a stakes winner,'' he said. "We don't want to increase the service again this season, even though Half Yours has gone on and won the Group 1 Caulfield Cup. We want to give everyone a chance to breed to the horse at a reasonable fee this season." St Jean is no one-trick pony, there are others, maybe not with the profile of the Melbourne Cup favourite, but they're around. "St Jean has some other horses coming through the ranks like Buzzaroon, trained by Aaron Purcell, who won three 2000m races in succession,'' Dwyer said. "And the Roger James trained The Precursor who ran second at Ellerslie recently. "If one of those two horses progresses to stakes company or Half Your does well going forward, then we would probably increase the service again in the 2026 stud season." For now though, Dwyer is just doing what he had done this time of year for two decades; the seven day a week chores of a busy hands-on studmaster. Only next week, it'll be a six-day week. Thanks to Half Yours – and St Jean. Read all news by Shayne O'Cass |

St Jean has no Sir Tristram – Nureyev – Nijinsky – Roberto –
Halo – Blushing Groom etc in his
pedigree St Jean's own Vuillier dosage and Pedigree profile indicate
a marked predisposition for stamina and middle-to-long distance racing,
particularly given the strength of his Pedigree profile, which suggests strong
staying power beyond 2300 metres. His dosage is well below the mark considered
optimal for G1 winners over 1600-3200 metres, implying he can impart
substantial stamina and closing speed to his progeny. His sire line, through
Teofilo and Galileo further reinforces this stamina influence, with a similarly
low Vuillier dosage and even more
pronounced staying profile. However, the dam, Oriental Fashion (by Marju), presents a
dosage and Profile which falls into the range associated with preference for
distances from 1400 to 2200 metres. This blend suggests that St Jean's foals
could inherit versatility, with a leaning towards middle distance and classic
trips, but with the right mare, could excel over longer journeys. Given St Jean lacks notable stamina and speed influences
like Sir Tristram, Nureyev, Nijinsky, Roberto, Halo, and Blushing Groom in his
pedigree, these lines represent valuable outcrosses. Broodmare sires descending
from these sires could introduce missing elements of speed, toughness, or
versatility. For instance, mares by sons or grandsons of Sir Tristram or
Nijinsky would inject proven G1-producing stamina, while Nureyev and Blushing
Groom lines could add turn of foot and adaptability. Roberto and Halo bring in
toughness and a strong record in classic and G1 races globally. In summary, St Jean appears to be an underutilised source of
stamina and closing speed, best matched with mares carrying influential speed
or classic lines missing from his own background, particularly those with low
Vuillier dosages, or those carrying the aforementioned
sires. This approach would maximise both the genetic outcross and the
likelihood of producing versatile, high-class performers suited to a range of
distances, with a strong bias towards classic and staying trips. Half Yours is a case in point, as he has Nureyev, introduced
through Desert King, the sire of Makybe Diva, and Sir Tristram, through Tristino. I found one other Desert King
broodie with a St Jean foal for no wins. La Gazelle Half Yours dam, also has some speed influences in her pedigree being VAIN and SHOWDOWN, and Sharp edge, who was a speed influences as well i think.despite the speed, the overall pedigree profiles of Half Yours, is heavily stamina inclined, La Gazelles 1/2 sister Ficiticious, by Blevic is also the dam of another St Jean winner in Jugan, and a bro of Fictitious, is MOUDRE, winner of the G3 2500m Queens Cup, and Heatherlie Hcp Edited by Take2 - 04 Nov 2025 at 11:49pm |

And this is what gelatis me. The stallion is an unknown, but now has had a good horse, and whats the first thing they do? Put the fee up... They will price themselves out of people looking at the stallion just like the owners did with Rebel Dane...

With St Jean now 15 yrs old, and prob in the twilight of a maybe blossoming awakening to His potential, the stud jacking up service fees on the back of one horse (as many others do)jumping on when the horse has actually bolted, is rather lame. Prob should have backed their judgement of him when they aquired him in providing the right mares.on the hiked fee, It would make more sense for them to actually get up and do some research on his genetics and advertise for mares compliant with whatever they find, at a discounted price, or again, do the research, and get out an buy some compatible mares. Zabeel presences in Mares spring to mind, Teofilo - Zabeel presences (not strictly a "cross" in the norm) = at least 5 SW from limited numbers (11 named) on my db, stretching it out to the Sir tristram presence like Half Yours has, i have 24 named 12 winners 6 sw incl 3 G1's Mme Germaine Vuillier said " it's the Mare that makes the stallion, and not the Vice Verce". so go figure

Looking at all named progeny of St Jean comes up with the following
32 Foals 12 winners one G1 winner, One SW (same, Half Yours) St Jean with the following Sires as suggested above
Zabeel one foal one to
race one wnner Sir Tristram 5 foals 5 to race 2 winners one G1 Winner (Half
Yours) Nureyev 5 foals 2 winners One g1 winner as above Halo 4 foals one winner some real pedigree research might help getting another G1 Half Yours has some close rellies, incl Peach Melba, who is from Her 1/2 sis Chouquette, and by St Jean, is a 4yr old |

St Jean could barely miss as a sire.
Look at the sires in his dam line. No wonder his owner had faith.

Bearing in mind too Take2 few would have had the start or trainer expertise of progeny from $100k stallions.
I do agree with QuizAbout tho', very premature to raise the fee, especially by that much

It might have been more profitable to raise the St Jean's fee to 5k.
I doubt he will get 100+ mares at 10k.

Thanks Gay for taking the time to start this thread on St Jean. Given I’ve been singing his praises for the past 2 years, shoukd have done it myself.
Not to sure there’ll be a massive uptick in broodmares visiting, but at now he’s on the radar.

I usually pooh-pooh stallion fee rises in these circumstances, but I can see reasons for it. They're a small stud, right? So the influx of 100+ mares and nonstop phone calls from every Tom, Dick and Karen would be a lot to handle. They'd need more staff, more facilities, more space and, oh, yes, more vets He's 15, too, so the increased 'work load' could take its toll. And what would the racing industry actually do with 100+ St Jeans (possibly from unsuitable mares)? They're not going to be up and running as 2yos. How many people are prepared to be as patient as HY's connections? So IMHO setting his fee at $10K is not unreasonable (how much would one of the Big Boys rack up the fee?), and I'm sure if you had a mare of the right breeding, they'd be encouraging.Good luck to them and to St Jean!

I’m only guessing, Glencoe! Though I think it’s reasonable for them to weed out some tyre-kickers and wannabes.
No doubt you’ve known a lot more stud masters than I have, but the few I’ve met were very busy, hardworking people and (understandably) a tad grumpy!

Such sad news Tragic Death of St Jean Tara Madgwick - Thursday November 27 This year’s Melbourne Cup provided the ultimate fairytale result when Australian bred stayer Half Yours claimed a memorable victory for champion jockey Jamie Melham and popular trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy, but there has been a tragic twist to this story. ![]() Half Yours was a game changer for his sire St Jean (IRE) - image Grant Courtney Half Yours was bred in Victoria and sired by the little-known stallion St Jean (IRE), whose star was on the rise with the emergence of his famous son as the nation’s best stayer. St Jean’s owner Grant Dwyer had been riding the high of spring success and deserved recognition at last for the 15YO son of Teofilo, but is now facing the tragic loss of his much loved horse. ![]() Vale, St Jean (IRE) - 2010 - 2025 Grant Dwyer issued the following statement on Thursday- It is with great sadness that I wish to announce the passing of our beloved Stallion St. Jean, a mere 3 weeks after his gelded son, Half Yours, won the Melbourne Cup. After covering a mare, Memory Lane, on Monday the 24th of November, St. Jean was returned to be fed in his paddock where he had lived happily and safely since the autumn of 2017. On the morning of 25th of November it was discovered, that for reasons unknown, St Jean had run into a fence post overnight, breaking it off at ground level and shattering his near side front leg around the elbow region. Dr Duncan Pearce BVSc MVS MVSc attended to the Stallion, X-Rays were taken, and we were advised that nothing could be done for the horse. The Stallion was then humanely euthanised. St. Jean was the first Victorian Stallion to sire a Melbourne Cup winner since 1973 and his achievement created a real buzz around the Victorian Breeding Industry. His death was very untimely as breeders were only starting to recognise what an incredible pedigree this stallion had. Bookings had started to pick up and he was due to cover a mare by Desert King that afternoon which would have given the same cross as Half Yours. He was due to cover five mares by Desert King this season and had bookings of 35 mares in total. I lament the fact that more breeders did not take the opportunity to breed to this stallion in the first few seasons at stud at an incredibly low price, when the opportunity was afforded to them. |
