From TDN:- Wootton Bassett to Stand for New Australian Record Fee at A$385,000A published fee of A$330,000 (inc GST) was the previous record, first set by Redoute's Choice when he stood at Arrowfield Stud in 2007 and 2008. Earlier this year, Newgate Farm announced that Extreme Choice would match that fee in 2025, a significant increase on the A$275,000 (inc GST) he stood for in 2024. Wootton Bassett returns to Australia having made an excellent start with his first crop of two-year-olds bred in the Southern Hemisphere, headed by G1 Golden Slipper runner-up Wodeton and State Visit, who filled the same position in the G1 Inglis Sires'. That first crop was conceived when Wootton Bassett stood for a fee of just A$71,500. “Wootton Bassett is the hottest stallion in the world at the moment and he is already making an undeniable mark on the breed in Australia,” said Coolmore Australia's Tom Magnier last month, confirming the son of Iffraaj's return to Jerrys Plains. “What is most exciting about him in an Australian context is that he has 100 unraced two-year-olds from his first crop and every trainer we speak to seems to have a good one. We're just excited to have him back again, as we see him as a champion sire of the future in Australia.” In Europe, Wootton Bassett is responsible for 11 Group winners from his first crop bred at Coolmore's Fethard base. They are now three-year-olds and include the top-level winners Camille Pissarro, Henri Matisse, Tennessee Stud and Twain, with the first-named pair due to appear in Sunday's Poule d'Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp. |

While he is a top 10, maybe top 5 stallion in the country that just seems far too high. When you have other stallions that are better around the 200k mark, not sure why you'd go there. I guess he is far easier to breed to than them which might make his colts more appealing but still. Snitzels and I Am Invincibles and to a lesser extent, Zoustars and Written Tycoons all seem to have more $1,000,000+ progeny at the sales. Even the returning Too Darn Hot for 100k cheaper is more appealing to me.

Wootton Bassett AU$71,500 in his first two seasons of 2021 and 2022, AU$93,500 in 2023, and by fee on arrangement last year, when the going rate was believed to be around AU$275,000. Now AU$385,000 ![]() |

Interesting race career too. Proves my point that you don't need to be that good a racehorse to be a successful sire. I'd back Storm Boy to beat the Bassett if they could meet at their peak.
Which in both cases was definitely as 2yos.

Still yet to get a stakes winner here (they will eventually come i am not naive). It is different gravy having to compete against our sprint sires having years of success here. $385k is ridiculous but he is an outcross to everything and seems to at least overseas be able to throw 1200-2400m. Nothing he has done in Aus so far warrants 385k. Ole Kirk was more impressive as a 2yo sire.

Still yet to find that elusive stakeswinner. Feel he is in a similar boat (in Aus not overseas) to justify where the hype, not the performance is dictating his price.

Oh yeah he is a terrific stallion, but I feel 385K to me means it will basically be coolmore themselves sending all their mares to him. Surely very few people not at Coolmore take that offer up when you have so many other great stallions at far better prices. I mean Zoustar is so proven at this point and 100k cheaper. Same goes for I am Invincible.

I just read the Coolmore press release and it said he got choke which led to pneumonia. I’ll look into it later and will be doing research! I never knew that choke could cause pneumonia but it kinda makes sense.

Yes a great shame.
Forgetting his somewhat humble beginnings, a hugely interesting stallion for a number of reasons, ie: 1. His record on the UK/Ireland/France Sires List isn't exactly brilliant, eg 117th, 50th, 40th,14th, 10th, 27th, 9th and thus far leading this season. 2. He's sired approximately 23 stake-winners which is excellent but hardly stellar, however more importantly 3. Two-thirds (15) of the 23 stakes-winners have been Gp1 winners, albeit 4. 80% (12) of the 15 Gp1 winners could only win once at that level. Just shows you why Gp1 winning progeny are so important in determination of stud fees. Reminds me a tiny bit of Street Boss in Australia. This bloke has plenty who can't raise a gallop as reflected by his standing on the Sire lists, ie 47th, 71st, 60th, 49th, 40th, 40th, 24th, 15th, 7th and 36th. Very ordinary indeed, however he too is able to get can get an outstanding one and stands for $66k. Sorry if there's any errors in the above.

Esophageal Obstruction (Choke) in Horses
What is choke?Takeaways
Esophageal obstruction, also known as choke, is common in horses. It occurs when food or foreign objects block the muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach (the esophagus). The obstruction can be caused by rapid ingestion of feed material (bolting), improper chewing due to dental disease, swallowing a foreign body, inadequate water intake, eating when heavily sedated, or the presence of esophageal disease such as megaesophagus, abscesses, cysts, and other conditions. Studies have shown that Friesians have a higher prevalence of esophageal disease, particularly meagaesophagus, than other breeds. This can make them predisposed to choke. Anecdotally, American Miniature Horses are also overrepresented among cases of choke. One of the most common complications from choke is aspiration pneumonia, which develops when feed material and saliva make their way into the lungs, causing secondary bacterial infections. The longer the obstruction is present, the higher the risk of aspiration pneumonia. Another potential complication from choke is trauma to the esophagus. This can range from mild (ulceration) to severe (perforation). It is important to note that horses can choke on a variety of feedstuffs and treats, especially if they are prone to eating rapidly. Although it is a common belief that beet pulp causes choke, research has shown that it is no more likely to cause choke than other types of feed. What are the clinical signs of choke?Choke is usually characterized by nasal discharge that contains saliva and food. This often appears as a green, frothy discharge from the nostrils. Other clinical signs may include excessive salivation, coughing, gulping, trouble swallowing, sweating, extension of the head and neck after eating, and restlessness. Choke is a serious condition that can result in life-threatening complications. Contact your veterinarian if you think your horse may be choking. While you are waiting for them to arrive, keep your horse as calm as possible. Do not let your horse eat as this can worsen the obstruction and do not attempt to resolve the choke yourself. How is choke diagnosed?Choke is diagnosed based on clinical signs and physical examination, including an oral examination. A nasogastric tube may be passed to determine the location of the obstruction. Additional diagnostic tools such as endoscopy, ultrasound, and radiography may be required for more complicated or recurring cases. How is choke treated? Some cases of choke in horses resolve on their own, especially if the horse is sedated since sedation promotes relaxation of the esophagus and other muscles. Medical management of choke is focused on removing the obstruction while minimizing potential trauma to the esophagus and preventing aspiration pneumonia. Esophageal lavage(s) with warm water are often used to break up the impaction. Broad spectrum antibiotics may be prescribed for cases with aspiration pneumonia. Esophageal obstructions may require surgery under general anesthesia in severe cases, but surgical management is rare and carries a high incidence of complications. Affected horses may need to remain off their normal feed for a day or more after the choke is resolved. Feed should then be reintroduced gradually per your veterinarian’s instructions. A wet pelleted feed is typically offered before forage because it is gentler on the esophagus. Horses that experience recurrence of choke may require permanent dietary modifications. What is the prognosis for choke? The prognosis for choke is generally good in cases of simple esophageal impaction that are first-time occurrences with no associated complications. The prognosis is often poor for cases in which the obstruction is due to functional or morphological abnormalities and cases that experience complications. How can choke be prevented?Horse owners can help prevent choke by:
It is difficult to prevent choke in horses that become affected due to anatomical problems or diseases. Avoiding recurring incidents may require veterinary interventions such as advanced diagnostics and surgery. |
