Cool Archie to miss spring, Doncaster Mile looms large

Cool Archie, a shining light of the Brisbane winter carnival, will be a spring absentee.

Co-trainer Chris Munce confirmed the Group 1 JJ Atkins winner would have an extended spell after a busy juvenile campaign that netted an impressive sequence of victories in Queensland.

The son of Newhaven Park resident Cool Aza Beel stamped his claims for Australian two-year-old of the year honours with five straight victories and more than $1.6 million in prize money.

Beaten at his first four appearances, Cool Archie swept all before him in the latter stages of the season, winning the Dalrello Stakes, Champagne Stakes and BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes before signing off in style in the JJ Atkins.

Munce said the Doncaster Mile at Randwick would be a primary three-year-old focus for Cool Archie.

Cool Archie is listed as a $15 chance for the Golden Rose and the Caulfield Guineas but Munce says the colt is unlikely to be seen again until a summer cameo.

Cool Archie injured in summer carnival blow
Queensland summer carnival headline horse Cool Archie has been injured and will not contest his planned comeback race at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Chris and Corey Munce's Group 1-winning colt was set to add much-needed star power to the summer carnival when resuming from a break to tackle the Listed $200,000 Gold Edition Plate (3YO) over 1200m
However, Chris Munce told Racenet that the young colt, who won five races in a row during the Queensland winter carnival including the Group 1 JJ Atkins, would not be an acceptor.
Cool Archie, who was due to be seen for the first time at the races as a three-year-old, had an issue after trackwork on Tuesday.
"I wasn't happy with how he pulled up this morning and he has been sent off for scans," Munce said.
"Martin Harley had been excited, galloping him on the course proper at Eagle Farm this morning, but then the colt pulled up with an issue.
"He is obviously a valuable colt and we don't want to jeopardise anything with him going forward.
"It is disappointing for the whole stable.
"That's all the information I really have at the moment and we will know more in the coming days."
Cool Archie had been the $2.80 favourite for the Gold Edition and his absence on Saturday is a blow for the carnival.
It will be a bigger blow if the exciting colt, owned by Max Whitby, ends up being ruled out of the entire summer carnival.
Before the injury setback, Cool Archie had been the $3 favourite for the Gold Coast Magic Millions Guineas next month.
Cool Archie was crowned Queensland two-year-old Horse of the Year at the Queensland Thoroughbred Awards and many thought he should have scored the Australian 2YO title, which was won by Golden Slipper champion Marhoona.
Cool Archie's five-race winning streak included races from 1000m-1600m and on a variety of track surfaces, finishing with a thumping Group 1 triumph.
Last week, Cool Archie won a specially organised trial after the midweek races at Ipswich.
The Ipswich Turf Club had come to the rescue after it had been intended that Cool Archie have a Brisbane trial weeks earlier, but terrible weather in Brisbane had put an end to that.

'He could have been anything': Star colt Cool Archie retired

Freakish Group 1 star Cool Archie – one of the best young horses Queensland has produced in many years – has been retired.

Owner Max Whitby confirmed to Racenet that the colt, who went on an incredible five-race winning spree culminating in the Group 1 JJ Atkins in his two-year-old season, had run his last race.

Cool Archie was set to be a summer carnival weapon before trainers Chris and Corey Munce discovered the talented colt had sustained a leg injury.

"I officially retired him on Monday," Whitby told Racenet.

"We got exhaustive vet checking done and got various medical opinions.

"The bottom line is that we didn't want to diminish his two-year-old record, which we all know speaks for itself.

"I would have loved to have got him back as a three-year-old, but it was not to be.

"I could have put him in the paddock for a year, but he would have been a four-year-old.

"He has an injury to the upper part of his knee, a very hard part to get to.

"I was hanging in there with him for a while, I thought maybe he could come back.

"But the injury was very significant, not life-threatening or anything, but definitely career-threatening.

"I couldn't wait until he was four to start racing again and then if he had come back and if he had failed, it would have done damage to his reputation.

"It's a bit sad, because he could have been anything."

Whitby has had a long association with Chris Munce, dating back to when Munce rode Savabeel (Cool Archie's grandfather) to Cox Plate glory for Whitby in 2004.

Hall of Famer Chris Munce told Racenet that Cool Archie was the second best two-year-old he had had anything to do with, only behind Dance Hero who Munce once rode to Golden Slipper glory.

"I've always said that Dance Hero is the best two-year-old I have been associated with, this horse runs a clear second to him," Munce told Racenet.

"To go from a maiden to a Group 1 in one preparation and to do what he did was extraordinary.

"It wasn't your typical knee injury he suffered, so at the end of the day it wasn't worth the risk racing him on."

Whitby indicated there were multiple studs interested in Cool Archie as a future stallion.

"I've got probably five or six studs interested," Whitby said.

"There is one prominent New South Wales Stud that is well advanced in negotiations with me."
