Rusty's comment about Yanks made me think that a thread about travel experiences may be fun.

I have not travelled much, did the Europe thing decades ago, bit foggy in the memory.

Remember French pastries were amazing, went from cake shop to cake shop Smile
Swiss ones pretty good too. Had the best hot dog ever in Vienna, street vendor.
Israelis were the most arrogant, unpleasant people I encountered.
Taiwan motorists are crazy, I nearly sht myself taking a taxi, weaving in and out at speed, cm's to spare.
Po[sih food was spectacular, a simple cafe had better food than the most expensive restaurants here, I would move there just for the food.

Whale, I agree about Polish food. Love that kind of stuff and could happily live on it. Can I ask though were you one of those people like me who felt guilty paying so little (in aussie dollars) at cafes, restaurants etc in Eastern Europe? I've had friends who tell me it's ridiculous to feel bad about it because western tourists support the businesses etc, can leave big tips for staff etc, and I get that, but I still felt bad. I don't think I could be happy being a billionaire.

Didn't feel bad, I thought the price was fair in relation to their cost of living and wages. I have been told that prices in Poland have escalated now and it is more expensive thasn Australia. 3rd hand, someone who moved there because of cost of living, now finds himeslf paying more LOL

There are no decent Polish restaurants in Melbourne IMO, maybe I have an unrealistic opinion because my mother was such a great cook. I don't think so, the little workers cafe in Poland made food that I thought was actually better than hers, so disloyal of me Ouch

Albo didn't cause the escalation of prices in Poland did he?

He gets blamed for it here.

Wow. That's amazing if true re the prices. I was mainly in Slovakia but Poland was the same re prices back in the 90s/ 2000s. One thing I found sad about Eastern Europe in that time was how it was gradually becoming trashy-westernized. I actually had Slovakian/ Polish friends who preferred the "simpler" life under Communism in many ways. I guess you just had a rut you had to follow and it freed up some more appreciation for family, food, nature etc.

Am in Noosa now. Find the usual activities, relaxing by pool, at beach, bush walks, ferry cruises really boring. Sit in apartment a lot looking at laptop. Paid a fortune for the privilege of doing what I do at home LOL
Hastings Street is okay, some good food at reasonable prices, but to pay a fortune for a holiday just to stroll around main strip and eat out doesn't make sense to me. And school holidays, Easter, very expensive. Anyway in this life you have to consider others, sometimes Confused

You could go and take your laptop on a bushwalk at least. But then sometimes it's just nice to be in a different room to home, doing nothing.

do the national park walk Whale - its brilliant. To sunshine beach and back is about 4 hours I think but time well spent. Also go to Bistro C. Go early and get table next to the beach, excellent food and not too expensive

I like the restaurant just near the corner of Hastings and Noosa Drive.

  Laguna Jack's Restaurant and bar.

Very good food, well presented...and doesn't break the bank.

I might have mentioned this before?

My cousin and I planned a trip to see an Irish mate in the early 80’s who was working as a driller in Pagadian City, Mindanao, Philippines.

We booked all flights, Sydney - Manila, Manila - Zamboanga..
Pagadian City - Cebu, Cebu - Manila, Manila - Sydney.

We left out the Zamboanga - Pagadian leg, thinking we’d sort it out when we got to Zamboanga. It was only about 270km by road.

It was just after Marcos lifted martial law. No one would give us a plane ticket or ferry ticket without a military clearance which would take weeks to organise. It was too dangerous to go by road as the New People’s Army was continually ambushing (and killing) people.

At our mate’s suggestion, for US$50 and a carton of Benson and Hedges a taxi driver bribed our way onto the ferry, which took all night to get to Pagadian.

By the time the word got out on the ferry that 2 foreigners were aboard we were well into the trip.

We ended up in the wheelhouse smoking and drinking whiskey with the Captain 😀 And even had a go at steering the ferry!

Some months (years?) later the ferry, the “Red Rose” sank with 100’s drowning 😡

In my youth was doing Europe in a combi, and was at dinner one night, where the restaurant was 90% booked for a circumcision party.
Thank God I’d finished my meal before “festivities “ were commenced….

I went off the beaten track and rode, horse back, from the east coast to west coast of Scotland, over hills and dales, thru bogs and rivers, and ended up going over the Five Sisters Of Kintale, scrambling up on my hands and knees and towing a horse behind me.  Going down the other side I sat down and let him tow me to the bottom.  Tore the bum out of my jods. Cry
animals before people.
