Does the stud fee indicate limited faith,$16,500 seems low for coolmore,lameness to cover up lack of ability ?

I got the red flags as soon as I saw to fee, too, mc. Very low for Coolmore. Shows their lack of faith in him and/or trying to attract mares Confused

The reality is that while Justify has done extremely well at stud, Storm Boy's female family is somewhat average.
Ok the 2nd dam Seachange was a superstar in NZ, however given opportunity she's been more than a tad disappointing as a broodmare.  And whilst the third dam has a number of Group winners around her they're they've only been NZ also.

The fee indicates, that he wont be supported by their own mares, and theyll take any mare they can get to him, will deal on the fee etc
They did the same to Aussie Rules etc, had i think 3 seasons here then shipped off, all it is, is them trying to recoup what $$ they can from a bad investment, and who cares about those who send mare to him.

Look at how many stallions stand at Coolmore in Ireland and never see Ballydoyle.

Did Aiden ever train a So You Think ?

Does Coolmore in Ireland have any So You Think broodmares ?

I doubt they have any Calyx or Churchills' either.

He was a superstar as a two year old, breathtaking performances, may be maturity as an entire  - his mind elsewhere perhaps - Perhaps we will see him back racing as gelding if he doesn't fire at stud, given what SC said re his dam line??

I actually have a gut feel he will b a very good sire and outperform his fee but I don't think you can call him a superstar at 2. He clearly showed he was a length behind the best and that only increased as he turned 3.

Storm Boy’s book of 224 leads the way for first-season sires


Coolmore’s Storm Boy has had the largest book of any Australian-based first-season stallion in seven years, with early data showing he served 224 mares across the 2025 breeding season.

Preliminary data started appearing on the Australian Studbook when the New Year ticked over and it indicates that the son of Justify was by far the busiest first-season stallion, with a book of 224.

Those numbers may not be final, but the 224 would be his minimum-size book.

According to the studbook, Storm Boy, who stood at $16,500 in his first season, served 62 mares in September, 81 in October, 69 in November and 12 in December. It is the largest book for an Australian based stallion since Merchant Navy served 247 mares in 2018.

Newgate’s Capitalist served 229 mares in his first season in 2017.

Storm Boy, trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, rocketed to prominence off his win in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2024.

Secured by Coolmore as part of a deal which would have valued him at $50 million had he won certain races, he became one of the most highly rated two-year-olds after winning the Skyline Stakes.

He started $2.60 favourite in the Golden Slipper but finished third behind Lady Of Camelot and Coleman.

Gee that ended well for buyers
Trust in vendors
And Coolmore's ongoing "commitment to local industry"


Merchant Navy punted to Wagga (seroisly Great Family Farm / Angus is a great bloke)  
however he covered 12 mares last season / 43 the season prior (so he is on a flyer) and has 3 stakes winners from 400 foals (3yo or above) as at 29/01/2026 not to mention his North Hem covers.

Good Luck to all involved I think this investment for their mare's is astute and calculated, in no way influenced by spin and froth.Embarrassed

Coolmore always have the small breeder in mind 
Just think - Mull of Kintyre, Magna Grecia, Zoffany there are many more Steak Knife stallions that Coolmore have padded out their Roster with, they are no alone in doing this most farms do it.

So of the people who maybe a bit green to the game need to be aware and guided.
Hope to see many pelican phrased horse in the future, racing at Northam, Loth, Chinchilla, Port Augusta and the Like.

Knowing a little bit about the industry certainly helps if you're into breeding thoroughbreds.

This bloke stood for an advertised $16,500 in 2025 however suggest few of his 227 covers were booked  for more than $11,000 and many for rather less than that.  And one suspects Coolmore sent him 40 or so lesser mares.

If you're a multi it's well worth a punt, otherwise..

Takes exactly the amount of outside covers until the money returns on poor purchase by the farm,

If 

Storm Boy wins the Slipper instant retirement, no Northern Hemisphere embarrassment and he stands for $88:000 and the money is back inside two seasons and you are playing with house money if he is good or bad.

that is the profile they work to   

not many of us here would remember the story of Murphy's Blu Boy, but its a cautionary tale of early 2yo
speculation of future success

The movie about a pelican was called storm boy.  I think he thinks the horses will often carry that type of name but be racing in the bush
