Two major rail projects in doubt ahead of 2032 Games - News | InDaily, Inside Queensland

The state government has conceded two rail projects it previously promised to transport 2032 Olympics goers are at risk after major cost blowouts were unveiled.

Major rail projects promised as part of the 2032 Olympics infrastructure plan are in doubt with significant cost blowouts revealed.

The Queensland government has vowed to have mass transit in place by the Games but is relying on its 100-day infrastructure review to come up with the solutions.

Extending Queensland’s Sunshine Coast rail through to Maroochydore and completing the Gold Coast light rail may not be finished in seven years to meet the demand of the 2032 Olympics.

A submission to the state’s Games 100-day infrastructure review has claimed the Sunshine Coast rail extension could nearly double from $12 billion to more than $20 billion sparking concerns it may be too out of budget to complete.

The project –- which was set to connect Brisbane, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast – was recently taken off the federal government’s infrastructure priority list which Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said on Thursday spelled alarm bells for funding cuts.

Stage one currently has $5.5 billion committed by the state and federal governments for completion.

Bleijie said the submission’s figures that Sunshine Coast rail could cost $500,000 a metre are “alarming” but the bigger concern is the federal government deprioritising the project.

“Our commitment is absolutely to have mass transit delivered by 2032 and now the federal Labor government have gone away from that commitment,” he said.

He has written to federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King to demand the rail project be put back on the priority list so it can be completed.

But the government will be relying on the 100-day Olympics infrastructure review’s findings for the best way forward.

“We are absolutely saying we must deliver a transport solution to the people of the Sunshine Coast by 2032 and we are looking at all the proposals put into the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority,” Bleijie said.

Bleijie also revealed stage four of the Gold Coast light rail – Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta – is in doubt with the state government to conduct a second review of the project before continuing with the build.

It will look at the modes, the type of transport and routes.

“If there are other modes of transportation that might be done sooner, we’d rather get on with the job and build things a lot quicker,” he said.

Stage four of the project has long been debated after the former Labor government revealed costs could rise to $7.6 billion.

He said the goal remains to complete the rail project by the 2032 Olympics but further consultation with the community is needed to get on with the job.

The state’s independent 100-day review of infrastructure, including stadiums and transport options, is expected to deliver a blueprint by March.

According to ch 9: The Queensland government has set a deadline for a decision on the Olympic stadium, nominating March 25 as the day to reveal the plans.

Tom, they can’t spend money on a stadium, come on man. Think of how many hospitals or air con in schools they can have.

Now, where’s that sarcastic emoji when you need it😜

Reading between the lines there will be a new Stadium built, most likely at Victoria Park, they're just waiting for the best time to announce it.

Victoria Park (or Roma St Parklands, but that will never happen) makes the most sense if they are to build a new stadium, a new build needs to be central, anywhere else, be it QSAC, Albion Park, rebuild the Gabba or another site, will just replicate the existing problems for both the Gabba and QSAC, not being central enough.  Anyone who has been to the Gabba for anything would understand that.

This is all aside from the real question, would Brisbane have much use for a 50k plus capacity oval stadium? I guess there is the argument that maybe the Heat and Lions would attract more crowds if the ground was central and easier to get to and from but thats a bit of a chicken and egg scenario there.  Concerts and other events doesn't stack up, Lang Park does a fine job on that front, the only other event that draws a crowd is the Ashes test every four years.  I genuinely question if there is a sound case for building a new stadium in Brisbane at present.

9News has exclusively revealed a draft report of that review has now been handed to the government and it recommends building a new stadium at Victoria Park.

Brisbane Olympics 2032: David Crisafulli breaks election promise and announces controversial new stadium

Story by Andrew Messenger and Ben Smee, Guardian – extract of on line story

The Queensland government has announced it will build a new $3.8bn 63,000-seat venue at Brisbane’s Victoria Park as part of plans for a main stadium and other venues for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Breaking an election promise, the state government on Tuesday announced it would build several new facilities.

And the historic Gabba is slated for demolition, to be replaced by residential development.

A long-planned Brisbane Live Arena – which had been slated for the swimming – will not receive $2.5bn in commonwealth funding.

The premier, David Crisafulli, said the private sector will build the entertainment hub project at an old industrial site next to the Gabba.

“A new national aquatic centre will be developed at the site of the existing Centenary Pool in Spring Hill.”

The two large facilities will be just a few hundred metres apart.

The aquatic centre will feature main and secondary stadiums, each with large indoor pools to support elite training and competition. It will have a capacity of more than 25,000 during the Games and 8,000 after they end.

The Brisbane Showgrounds, which is also nearby, will host the athletes village. An earlier plan to build a new facility at Hamilton has been shelved.

Its 140-year-old heritage-listed main arena will be upgraded to a 20,000-seat capacity.

Upgrades to the Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson will include a new 3,000-seat show court arena and 12 new match courts.

There will also be new indoor sports centres at Logan and Moreton Bay, and a new whitewater rafting centre in the Redlands.

“The time has come to just get on with it and get on with it we will,” Crisafulli said on Tuesday.

The government has yet to reveal the individual costs of each venue, but insists it will be able to deliver the entire games within their existing $7.1bn budget.

At a press conference later on Tuesday, the premier confirmed he would tap a number of sporting codes and the private sector to help fund the event.

The Brisbane Arena – estimated to cost $2.3bn – will be entirely funded by the private sector, he said. The land the Gabba sits on will form the basis for a new residential precinct.

Crisafulli flagged that many other projects will be delivered in a public private partnership.

“I don’t fear that. I embrace that. And if there’s an opportunity with the stadium, well, that should be looked at,” he said.

He said the government had received “multiple, multiple” offers from the private sector for an arrangement to build the Arena, with government providing land and planning approval.

“And that, to me, makes a lot of sense. It makes a lot of sense, not just for taxpayers, but indeed, for people who want to get who want to see cities become world class cities,” he said.

Crisafulli said the state was not going to ask the Commonwealth for additional money than its $2.5bn commitment, and private sector investment isn’t required to keep within the $7.1bn budget.

Timeframes are also tight.

An indicative timeline prepared by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority suggested the main stadium would need to have a investment case finished in months, with planning approvals complete by the third quarter of 2026 to make it in time.

The project would need to be built in just four years with “practical completion” set for 12 months before the opening ceremony.

It’s estimated cost of $3.785bn does not include “associated precinct and transport infrastructure costs”.

As I've posted previously, I'm not sure there is a genuine economic argument for a new oval stadium in Brisbane when its legacy will be to be half full for Brisbane Lions fixtures and a couple days of Ashes tests every 4th summer.

But as they say, bread and circuses...

I think Qlders might find that after the olympics the new stadium will also be used for rugby and soccer internationals and pop concerts. Summer season pop concert tickets will sell in the $200 - 1000 per seat range depending on the artist. Got market something to the corporate box holders and ground advertisers

Lang Park already exists for all of that, maybe it needs a lick of paint but its still a good stadium, the smarter (and probably cheaper) option for more long term use would probably have been to put money into Perry Park and/or Ballymore, Dolphin Oval and the Sunshine Coast Stadium, football have been pushing for years for money to turn Perry Park into a 17k Stadium or the Roar to play it, Rugby would also like to improve Ballymore, Dolphin Oval and Sunshine Coast would both make sense to me as it would allow both regions to attract more events with a better Stadium.

It shows the political influence of other sports compared to Football considering Football actually has the highest participation numbers of all Sports in Qld.

Who did Brisbane beat to host the Olympics?

Pretty sure it was a walkover.

In which case, there’s no need to waste money on new stadia.

If they must, they should be spending it in places where there’s some potential for future use.

Spending anything on Ballymore is just burning cash.

It’s impossible to get in and out of.

It’s just a nice training facility.

I note Qld govt is not including things like transport infrastructure in the Olympic costs.  I am betting gross costs will be about $20 billion before taking into a/c revenue from ticket sales etc.

Rusty, that is all SE Qld Stadiums, in terms of getting to and from.  The Gabba is a nightmare, you've got buses and thats it, Robina (last time I went) had bus and train access although for whatever reason both left from the same location so it created a log-jam of people leaving at the same time.  If you hadn't looked at the map you'd think the Gabba was half way to the Gold Coast rather than 2.5km from City Hall as the crow flies.

Lang Park is the only one that isn't too bad, at least the patrons leaving have multiple options, buses, Milton Station, head to Caxton Street or even walk into the City.

I just think $3.8 billion for a Stadium thats post-Olympic legacy will be hosting Lions games, Heat games and international cricket at under 50% capacity is crazy, but I guess in typical LNP fashion they've got to look after their developer mates.

Like I said, bread and circuses.

Lets be honest Australian football and cricket are two big hitters in the Australian sporting landscape, cricket have already landed some blows on Brisbane with the Gabba clearly now the 5th seed of the 5 main venues and surely the AFL are also making their moves behind the scenes, a new oval stadium of some description for Brisbane was always going to happen once the new Adelaide Oval and Perth Stadium were opened.

I think they absolutely need a new stadium to host the Olympics. Existing venues just do not cut it - not modern enough, too small, transport to/from is poor etc. Options for use after the games are actually secondary IMO. It’s more about hosting an event like the Olympics required something world class.

That said, whether Brisbane should be hosting the games is the more important question for me and my opinion is it’s a no.  Don’t think it’s big enough to warrant an event of this nature. Sydney or Melbourne yes. Brisbane no. Just my opinion though.

So to summarise: Unnecessary expense for an event that I don’t think is suited to a city like Brisbane. But IF people insist on going ahead with it then absolutely a must to spend the money and do it properly.

Victoria's Jeff Kennett has outlined three options for future olympics that have not yet been awarded.  1. Offer them to a country rather than a city to make better use of that countries existing sporting facilities eg tennis would be in melbourne, 2 hold all the games in athens although that would require a complete rebuild and, 3 hold the games in melbourne - who woulda thought he would suggest no 3 eh !

Of course you need modern infrastructure to host the Olympics, that’s obvious. And the fact that no other cities wanted it doesn’t change that. Imagine if they had have actually wheeled out QSAC as the venue for the games! Would have been a monumental embarrassment. But I’d have been more happy if the whole thing had never happened. Can we do a Victoria and change our mind like they did with the Comm Games?

Embarrassing for who?

It’s the most corrupt organisation in the world, who demanded bigger and better stadia, which is fine, when countries were willing to outdo each other for the glory.
But, everyone has woken up, and no one wants it.

I don’t care if they run the 100m final at Indooroopilly.

That all may be true but like it or not, the event still remains a massive showpiece and opportunity to display the country and city to the world. Do it properly or don’t do it at all (my preference). If you’re looking to discourage people from visiting then sure, let’s serve up two weeks in dilapidated gelati hole venues. Maybe they can run the marathon from Woodridge to Redbank Plains.
