Without being terrible. QLD studs have an very good record with first season sires. Hope he doesn’t end up another Adraan. The chance he was given is not dissimilar but with much greater numbers.

Most unfortunate.  Looked fine when we recently attended the Widden stud parade.

Has had his problems: missing a season here earlier on due to an injury in Ireland, and again sustained an injury last season in Oz which caused him to miss the 2022 NH season.  Plus has had very poor fertility from Day 1 down-under.

World champion racehorse and high-class sire Rock Of Gibraltar dies aged 23

Son of Danehill's 16 top-flight winners included Mount Nelson and Society Rock

Rock Of Gibraltar, the world champion miler who would make even bigger global headlines during the start of his stud career, died at the age of 23 due to heart failure on Sunday night.

The son of Danehill, who was bred by Joe Crowley, Anne-Marie and Aidan O’Brien, wrote his name into the history books when becoming the first horse to win seven consecutive Group 1s in the northern hemisphere, breaking Mill Reef's 30-year record.

He won at the Curragh on his first start at two for O'Brien and concluded that season with successes in the Grand Criterium and Dewhurst, having also landed the Gimcrack and Railway Stakes - the latter from stablemate Hawk Wing.

As a three-year-old he added the 2,000 Guineas, Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Prix du Moulin to his CV.

He rounded his career off with a second in the Breeders' Cup Mile, retiring to Coolmore for a private fee in 2003 and would shuttle to Australia, Japan, Chile and Brazil as well as continuing to cover small books at home in recent years.

While Rock Of Gibraltar was famed for his prodigious racecourse talent, he was to end up being part of an infamous dispute between John Magnier and Sir Alex Ferguson.

The then Manchester United manager had been given a half-share in the colt, who first appeared in his red colours winning the Gimcrack. Ferguson believed he had ownership rights to Rock Of Gibraltar’s stallion career and initiated legal action with Magnier and Coolmore.

With Magnier and his associate JP McManus being major shareholders in the club, the argument took on a public dimension before reaching what Ferguson described as "an amicable settlement" in early 2004.

Rock Of Gibraltar has sired 256 stakes performers to date, including 77 worldwide Group winners and 16 at the highest level.

They included Eclipse and Criterium International winner Mount Nelson, Golden Jubilee Stakes and Haydock Sprint Cup winner Society Rock plus Irish 1,000 Guineas and Garden City Stakes heroine Samitar and Hong Kong Cup scorer Eagle Mountain. He had been making a name as a broodmare sire in the 2020 and 2021 Guineas winners in Kameko and Poetic Flare.

Coolmore's Castlehyde Stud manager Paddy Fleming said: “He was healthy and looking great right up to the end. He was a fantastic racehorse and a very good sire who will be missed by all the staff here.”

FIORENTE at only 15yo Cry

The winner of the 2013 Melbourne Cup, Fiorente, has died.

The 15-year-old stallion passed away after a battle with illness.

Fiorente was brought to Australia from Ireland by legendary trainer Gai Waterhouse in 2012.

He finished a narrow second in the 2012 Melbourne Cup behind Green Moon but went one better the following year.

Fiorente was ridden by Damien Oliver when he won the Melbourne Cup.

Waterhouse was saddened by his death.

"I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Fiorente," she said on Tuesday night.

"He gave me the greatest joy of my racing life winning the Melbourne Cup in 2013. He was the most beautiful horse to train, so talented and handsome and he took everything before him."

VRC chairman Neil Wilson said: "The VRC extend our condolences to the connections of Fiorente including trainer Gai Waterhouse and Widden Stud."

"His 2013 Melbourne Cup win will always be remembered at Flemington through the sheer joy and emotions that the win provided.

"His legacy will always be a part of Flemington and will continue through his daughter Lunar Flare who has secured her spot in the 2023 Lexus Melbourne Cup."

Fiorente retired to stud in 2014, covering 186 mares in his first season.

"We're all devastated," said Phil Marshall who has worked with Fiorente since his retirement to Sun Stud then Widden Victoria.

"Fiorente was unbelievably tough, but at the same time an absolute gentleman.

"The staff who knew him well are understandably shattered; he will be greatly missed not only by us but by the whole industry.

"Throughout his career, he was able to produce horses with the same bravery and tenacity, which he had in spades."

Fiorente leaves us as the sire of 148 winners, 15 stakes performers with progeny earnings of $15m including Group 2 winners Lunar Flare, Stars Of Carrum and Hawkshot.

Dual G1 winner Trust In A Gust has been lost to the Victorian breeding industry after Glen Eden Stud announced the passing of their stallion on Tuesday.

The 10-time winner and earner of over $1 million in prizemoney claimed back-to-back Group 1 victories in 2014 when claiming the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and Toorak Handicap at Caulfield.

The son of Keep the Faith who was a $45,000 Inglis Premier yearling purchase would also become a pinup for the Vobis Gold scheme with lucrative wins in the Vobis Gold Eureka, Carat and Star.

The 12-year-old retired to stud in 2016 and covered close to 300 mares in seven seasons.

"Trust in a Gust was a true champion in every sense of the word. His exceptional racing ability combined with his undeniable presence made him a favourite among breeders and racing enthusiasts alike,” breeder Adam Sangster said.

“We are immensely proud to have bred such a remarkable stallion at Swettenham Stud with his dam, Subtle Breeze, still playing her part as a nanny on the farm."

Trust In A Gust sired a winner as recent as last Thursday when the Robbie Griffiths and Matt de Kock trained Tempest Charm saluted at Kilmore.

Racing.com 26 May 2023:

David Brideoake loved the progeny of stallion Good Journey so much that he ended up using him privately at his family farm run by his son Tom for the final years of his career.  That's not surprising as Good Journey provided the trainer with two Group 1 winners in Western Australian Derby winner Grand Journey and Galaxy Stakes victor Griante.

When Good Journey was retired from commercial use in 2018 at the age of 22 by South Australian stud Cornerstone Stud, Brideoake arranged for him to go to his Roycetown farm at Violet Town, where he served a handful of his mares until 2021.  Sadly, last month at the age of 26, Good Journey passed away, but Brideoake said he's still got a few flagbearers for him to race.

Leading that charge is three-year-old filly End Journey, who will attempt to make it three wins from as many starts when she runs in the Schweppes Handicap (1000m) at Ladbrokes Park Sandown Hillside on Saturday, which is the same course and trip she won over on May 3.

Brideoake said End Journey is Good Journey's last filly and that's why he gave her the name.  "She's one of the last Good Journeys. He was such a good stallion to me. It's another notch for him getting a filly like her late in his career," Brideoake said.

"He was 26 years old. I think he was the last son of Nureyev to have covered horses in the world. I've still got a few boys, but this is the last filly."

This fellow was almost doomed from the start in Oz.  A top class Gp1 winning son of Nureyev and half to the multiple Gp1 winner Aldebaran.
Was in attendance when paraded at Ealing Park after his arrival in 2003, however he was imported by a breeding consortium which wasn't accepting outside mares.  Suffice to say he didn't serve many in his first seasons and didn't set the world on fire.
Then went to Lindsay Park where available to all but only attracted ordinary mares.  The first of his stake-winners didn't appear until 2008 and most were post 2010.
Great to see Brideoake looked after the fellow on his dotage.
