Voting Yes

At the start of the whole Voice announcement, I didn't know much about the topic and didn't care much. 

Now, I'll be voting yes.

I've done my research. I've read the Uluru statement statement from the heart which piqued my interest to read more. I've read about the historical abuses and genocides, the white australia policy, the stolen generation as well as the continuing child protection policies of today which in many ways is doing the same damage that the stolen generation practices did many years ago. When I went through school, I learnt about Gov Macquarie and the dreamtime and that was about it in the education curriculum. Nothing at all about how badly treated ATSI were and still are treated.

First Nations people, on a national basis, are over representated statistically in regards to youth detention, adult incarceration and suicide. The list goes on for many other attributes as well including education and health. Australia cannot be the pariah of the world and continue to ignore its own indigenous people desire for their rights and need for recognition. The 1901 constitution was a white australia policy in regards to ATSI.

The best way for change is for that group to have a say in its future opportunities and for them to have an inherent ability to invest in tackling the challenges. The Voice is one step in this change, in fact an actual small step in the overall scheme of things, that in 10 , 30, or 50 years will still be trying to correct the current imbalance. 

Don't be scared of the Voice. It's a step in the right direction. There will be much harder decisions to make in the future that are far more complex in nature.

Do your own research, listen to others from both sides of the argument,  read a broad base of data and you will end up with knowing what the right decision is.

You have a chance to make a small step towards change. Don't waste it by not doing your research and instead listening to the wrong people.
