Top Ranked set to miss Cox Plate

Top Ranked will miss the Cox Plate and his career is in doubt after pulling up short in a gallop at The Valley on Tuesday morning.

At around 6.30am near the 150m mark the Epsom Handicap winner went amiss in his near hind leg.

Top Ranked did not complete the gallop with his rider dismounting and vets immediately on the scene.

The grey walked back off the track and to the stalls and eventually departed in a horse ambulance at 7.25am, almost an hour after the incident .

Trainer Annabel Neasham was on hand at The Valley to watch Top Ranked gallop, but declined to comment on the severity of the injury until getting further clarity from vets.

Top Ranked was seen as one of the leading chances for this year's race, sitting at $13 in Sportsbet's market that sees Anamoe as a $2.20 favourite.

Hugh Bowman had been booked to ride the son of Dark Angel in the Cox Plate, having ridden him to victory in his two starts this spring.

Top Ranked was a G3 winner in Europe but enhanced his credentials for a future of stud last start in the G1 Epsom, where he claimed the race in a thrilling dead heat with Ellsberg.

Cox Plate contender Top Ranked has suffered a tendon injury after pulling up short in a gallop at The Valley on Tuesday morning.

Racing Victoria confirmed the diagnosis on Monday night, after the Annabel Neasham-trained galloper was examined at U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital.

Top Ranked was galloping at The Valley when he went amiss in his near hind leg near the 150m mark about 6.30am.

The Epsom winner was quickly attended to by vets and walked back to his stall before leaving the track almost an hour later by horse ambulance.

“Following examination at U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital, it has been determined Top Ranked has sustained a tendon injury to the hock," an RV statement read.

“The horse is not expected to race again this Spring, but the injury is not life-threatening.”

Yep Covetous was there, covering HUGE books of 50 or 60 mares off the back of St Covet,
when we had a much more diversified industry.

He had just four starts on our shores before injury curtailed his career
Last year, Basil Nolan at Raheen Stud in Queensland decided to take a punt on gorgeous grey Dark Angel stallion Top Ranked (IRE), who came to Australia and joined the Annabel Neasham stable for Australian Bloodstock.

He had just four starts on our shores before injury curtailed his career, but it was enough for us to see he was a genuine elite performer with wins in the Group III ATC Bill Ritchie (1400m) and the Group I ATC Epsom Handicap (1600m) before his unfortunate withdrawal from the Cox Plate.

Top Ranked received a warm welcome at Raheen Stud last spring covering 109 mares at the modest fee of $7,700 and his foals are earning high praise.

“He was an elite G1 winning racehorse by one of Europe’s best sires in Dark Angel, a stallion that has already enjoyed success here through Harry Angel, so we were thrilled to have the opportunity to bring a horse of his quality to Queensland,” said Basil Nolan.

Top Ranked is one of 17 Group I winners for Dark Angel and all of them are brilliant sprinter milers.

It’s a renowned speed sireline, although Top Ranked has plenty of stamina in his female family making for an intriguing mix that brings some quality outcross blood into the local Queensland broodmare pool.

“We’ve been really happy with his foals and he’s had good support again this spring,” added Basil Nolan.

It takes a wise man a lifetime to grow a tree and a fool five minutes to kill one.

I just saw this picture in the latest stallion book to come out for QLD based stallions, I noted his feet as you did Gay3, not a pretty site, and ruins his overall appearance.
His weanlings that went to the MM sale just gone mostly looked good types.

Raheen Stud has announced the sad passing of promising young stallion Top Ranked (IRE), who was euthanised on Thursday following a short illness.

The Group 1 Epsom Handicap winner had made an immediate impact at stud, covering more than 200 mares across his first two seasons while displaying strong fertility. His first yearlings are set to be offered at sales in 2026.

“About five weeks ago he went lame behind and our vet’s advice was to stop covering mares to allow him the chance to rest and recover, but sadly the condition continued to deteriorate,” said Basil Nolan.

“On Thursday, we took the tough decision to put him down with the autopsy revealing an issue with his kidneys.

“We have 20 mares in foal to him and the last mare he covered has also tested in foal.”

The striking grey was trained in Australia by Annabel Neasham for Australian Bloodstock, winning eight of his 16 starts and leaving a strong impression on those who worked with him.

That is very sad, being grey can have a down side, they seem to get cancers, I wonder if his Kidney problem was genetic or acquired?
They at least, have a few of his progeny coming on.
