Frankie Dettori joins World Pool for his final season
International racing legend becomes ambassador for global pool driven by Hong Kong Jockey Club

Friday 24 February, 2023
– World Pool, the globe’s largest commingled horse racing pools created
and powered by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, has joined forces with
Frankie Dettori for the 2023 season, the legendary jockey’s final year
in the saddle.
The partnership will see Dettori
provide regular blogs and content ahead of World Pool racedays in 2023,
starting at The Saudi Cup meeting this weekend where all six Group races
on Saturday will be commingled globally.
World Pool ambassador
Dettori said: “I’ve got a lot of different places to visit on my final
year in the saddle, so it’s great to be working with World Pool who have
also increased their reach to other countries and racetracks in 2023.
From The Saudi Cup to Dubai and then onto all the major days in the UK
and Ireland, it will hopefully be a very exciting season for all of us.”
Michael Fitzsimons, Executive Director Wagering Products of the Hong Kong Jockey Club,
said: “Having Frankie on board as a torchbearer in the final year of an
incredible career is absolutely brilliant for World Pool. It’s a huge
year for Frankie and it’s the same for World Pool after a record
breaking 2022, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be partnering with a
global icon who has done so much for the sport of horse racing.”
Speaking about his rides at The Saudi Cup on Saturday, Dettori said:
“I’ve got rides in four of the big Group races, including in The Saudi
Cup itself. The prize money is fantastic and hopefully we can come away
with some of it.
“I’m looking forward to getting back on TRAWLERMAN
in the Red Sea Turf Handicap. Winning the Ebor at York on him in the
summer gave me a great thrill, so hopefully he’s in the same kind of
form for this. If Subjectivist is still the same great horse he was when
winning the Ascot Gold Cup two years ago, then we might find it tough
to win, but he’s been off the track for a long time.
“In the Saudi Derby I’m teaming up with Bob [Baffert] on HAVNAMELTDOWN.
He’s a horse that ticks a lot of boxes, but this is his first start
over a mile and that’s the only thing we can’t be sure about. He’s got
plenty of speed, likes to be at the front and should run a big race if
he stays."
ELITE POWER
comes into this off the back of five wins and he is just a very tough
sprinter. I’m confident he’s a good horse, but it’s hard to assess his
chances against plenty of unknown opposition.
“I’d love to win The Saudi Cup in my final year, and COUNTRY GRAMMER
is a very solid contender. He never runs a bad race, has plenty of
experience and proved he handles conditions when second last year. The
Saudi Cup and Dubai World Cup have always been his targets and he
couldn’t have felt better when winning the San Antonio Stakes in
December.”
World Pool has extended its reach in
2023 with last Saturday’s Lightning Stakes Day at Flemington the first
Australian meeting to be part of World Pool. The Saudi Cup makes its
debut this Saturday and, for the first time, World Pool will be in
operation at Newbury Racecourse in the UK with two races added to the
World Pool season on Lockinge Stakes Day on 20 May.
Irish Derby Day is also set to feature
amongst 18 UK and Irish events on 2 July, a day which will also include
the Deutsches Derby at Hamburg-Horn, marking the first World Pool race
from Germany.
In 2022, World Pool betting turnover
hit a new high of HK$6 billion (approx. £622m), up from HK$4.8 billion
(approx. £498m) in 2021, across the 21 racedays that were commingled,
while Derby Day at Epsom recorded the single highest day of turnover
with HK$66.1 million (approx. £6.8m). https://worldpool.hkjc.com/frankie-dettori.aspx

Had an excellent stint at Santa Anita Park and also winners at Keeneland just recently.
I reckon he may just postpone his retirement for anudder season and enjoy the SoCal (Hollywood) lifestyle.

The Melbourne Cup carnival has received an almighty
boost with confirmation from the world’s leading jockey Frankie Dettiori
that he intends to ride over three days of the Flemington spring
carnival. On the 30th anniversary of his first Melbourne Cup ride,
Dettori, who is on a world-wide tour in his final year of riding,
confirmed he will again attempt to win the Melbourne Cup while he will
also be at Flemington for Oaks Day and for Champions Day. “I have
achieved all there is to achieve in horse racing and have had a
fantastic career, but the Lexus Melbourne Cup has always been one race
that I would love to win,” Dettori said. “I am looking forward to
returning to Melbourne to ride at the carnival for one final time and
hopefully I can finish my career with a Melbourne Cup win.” Dettori,
52, has ridden more than 250 G1 winners across a glittering career, but
he’s never been able to secure a Melbourne Cup in 19 attempts. Victoria
Racing Club (VRC) chief executive Steve Rosich said the club was
ecstatic to be welcoming Dettori to Flemington for the 2023 Melbourne
Cup Carnival. “Frankie Dettori is one of the best jockeys and
personalities the sport has ever seen and the VRC look forward to giving
him a fitting farewell at Flemington at the Melbourne Cup Carnival,” he
said. “The Lexus Melbourne Cup is a race that jockeys across Australia and the world want to win, and this year will be no different. “’Preparations
for this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival are well underway and racegoers
can look forward to another week of world-class racing, hospitality and
entertainment.” Dettori had his first ride in the Melbourne Cup in
1993 aboard Drum Taps, the same year that international raider Vintage
Crop made history becoming the first international horse to win the Cup. He
has since had 17 attempts to try and win the feature and has come
agonizingly close on three occasions – Central Park (2nd in 1999), Max
Dynamite (2nd in 2015) and Master of Reality (2nd in 2019 but relegated
to 4th). The 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival will carry more than $30
million in prizemoney across four days of racing beginning on November
4.

Magnificent rider for decades and would certainly add spice to the carnival, but can only win on favorites these days. Wonder if he might flatten half the Melbourne Cup field as he did on one about 7 or 8 years ago?

Frankie D. bolted in with a 19/1 long shot Honey Pants in the G3 Las Cienegas Stakes.
Sat patiently on then go the dream run on the rail and then Frankie was the difference in the head bobbing victory!

Frankie won SIX straight at Santa Anita Park on Saturday and just missed out on Baffert trained Imagination by a neck in the G1 Santa Anita Derby!

Retirement tour in the US continues. Usually at this time he would be at Epsom Downs but the last two days he has been giving fans a blast in the US.
On Friday night at Penn National sweeping the $400,000 G3 Penn Mile Stakes and the $150,000 Listed Penn Oaks. Then on Saturday he won the $104,000 Jersey Derby at Monmouth Park on Twirling Point.

But nearly two years later, retirement is no longer on the table for the
legendary rider. He has a visa that will allow him to stay in the U.S.
for three more years and the last thing on his mind is easing into
retirement.

It appears that Frankie is going to retire yet again.
From TDN:-
Frankie Dettori to Retire at the Breeders' CupBy Emma Berry Frankie Dettori left the Del Mar backstretch on Wednesday morning after riding his Breeders' Cup Mile mount Argine and refused all interviews as he departed the stable area. “There will be plenty of news tomorrow,” he said. But tomorrow appears to have come a day early as by lunchtime the legendary jockey had posted a statement on social media to announce his retirement from American racing after the Breeders' Cup meeting. He will also be in action across the two days aboard Wimbledon Hawkeye and Aspect Island for James Owen and the Gredley Family. Following Saturday's Californian farewell, Dettori will however take a “few rides” in South America. His statement read, “Following the Breeders' Cup on Saturday, I will be retiring from race riding in the United States and concluding my career with a few rides in South America, something I've always wanted to do. “It has been an honour to compete at the highest level of this sport for over four decades. I'm deeply grateful to my family, the owners, trainers, stable staff, and of course the supporters who have made my career possible. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this incredible journey. Ciao, Frankie.” The Italian-born Dettori, 54, enjoyed his best days in the saddle through a long and successful career based in Britain. He left home to work for his compatriot Luca Cumani in Newmarket at the age of 14 and rode his first winner, Lizzy Hare, at Goodwood on June 9, 1987. Through a longstanding retainer with Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation, he went on to become recognised as one of the best jockeys in the world, with his long list of major victories including 44 European Classics, six Arcs and 15 Breeders' Cup wins. Dettori initially announced his intention to retire in December 2022 and rode for the final time in the UK on British Champions Day in October 2023. In the week leading up to his swansong he revealed a change of heart and stated his plan to continue riding in California, where he has largely been based for the past two years.
