Check out the major findings of The Kinsella Royal Commission pre the establishment of off-course Govt run TAB's.

Pay particular note of maximum take-out rates & restrictions on where they could be located LOL

Compare to now for instance Confused

Not to be located within a mile of a pub LOL

Maximum take-out 12.5%

Our current take out across all bet types , including co-pooling rorts & rounding down dividends is 21 to 22%

10% difference - no wonder no bastard can win !

& these days stand alone TABs are almost a thing of the past. You almost have to have a Pub / Club to offer a retail bet.

I wonder why they put that restriction in early days. Only kidding - I know why LOL

The Commission recommended that specific conditions for the administration of agencies within the T.A.B. system included the prohibition of the following: broadcasting except for announcement of scratching, results, and dividends

No broadcasting of betting odds and off track betting closing off 10minutes before a race and that low deduction rate, although it crept up over the years, were the reasons on course punters had it all over the mugs in the TABs. They were the days alright Clap

No need for a Royal Commission when the corporates can pay off the politicians and anyone who lays down the rules.

Punters - Absolutely no chance...

A few had it all over a  certain " bunch of mugs " in the TAB on a day in the mid 60s that changed a few rules I suspect Bob. 😂😎

Race clubs and on course bookies both promoted those restrictions in betting odds and the closure of the TAB 10 minutes prior to the race in order to retain on course attendances. Move on 50 years to 2023 and outside of big race days tracks are deserted and on course bookies are akin to dinosaurs, relics of the past. Is racing the better for that ?  Prizemoney is at record levels and unfortunately corporate bookies, who are clones of each other,  rule the roost but as a major sport it ranks way down the food chain compared to its glory days. How many under 20 year olds could tell you who won last year's Melbourne Cup or who J McDonald might be? Back even in the early 2000s most would know of G Boss and Makybe Diva, let alone those 20 year olds in the 1970s , who knew of R Higgins & G Moore.

Because the future of racing is in the hands of those 20 year olds it is a worry.

well, that's a load of garbage, for a start.  Randwick's TAB is located about one hundred metres from two pubs.  Obviously never read the memo.

Do you ACTUALLY ever read other peoples posts. Or do you just not comprehend things very well ? The only other option is your not too bright.

The whole point of the thread was to point out how far we have gone down the "slippery slide".

As an aside, we didn't have pokies in Pubs back then - & Souths had a half decent team as well

I can assure you those 2 Randwick TABs where not around when the TAB started business in 1964.

Well, I can remember the first TAB in Mullumbimby in 1966 It was straight opposite the middle pub.

Deary me. Allow me too explain it again. The original guidelines presented by the RC stated no TAB could operate within a mile of a School, Church or Pub

We have gone from that starting point to 180 degrees the opposite. You almost cannot have a Retail outlet these days if it isn't in a Pub or Club Confused

Just another examples of societies slippery slide. You know - the good old softly, softly approach. Plenty of them. And now we are seeing the consequences - the poorest demographics getting fleeced when on the grog

And worse - those who claim to represent that demographic putting up brick walls to support the top end of town

Shame, shame !
