I can never find it each year so this should simplify the search for me  1. The only horses to be considered are those that ran 1st, 2nd or third in these qualifying races: Caulfield Cup Moonee Valley Cup MacKinnon Stakes 2. Eliminate all three year olds 3. Eliminate the winner of the Moonee Valley Cup and replace it with the 4th horse in that race but only IF the winner is penalised for its win in the Cup weights Edited by Gay3 - 03 Nov 2025 at 1:13pm |

When Tony Arrold put this system together in the late 70's I think, the LKS McKinnon Stakes was run on Derby Day.

It stopped working when the imports started coming in numbers, many not racing in his system races.

The thinking behind the McKinnon was that a lot of Cup horses used it as a ''barrier trial'' splitting the Caulfield Cup and MV Cup going into the MC and only 3 days before it.

With the MV Cup it was considered inferior to the Caulfield Cup but some winners got a penalty. Tony said the couldn't win with the penalty so he replaced it with the 4th horse.
