He is a tough one to price - SA Derby certainly doesn't add to the commercial appeal so he is essentially relying on an Underwood Stakes win, Cox Plate placing and hype (which is not unjustified). From a sire that didn't work here, albeit with limited opportunities, and from a black-type family that isn't instantly recognisable to the average Aussie breeder.

I could draw a parallel with Adelaide, who started at $22K when retired to Coolmore. Maybe $16.5K if they want to guarantee a strong book. What is also interesting is where he ends up - would be great for the new Widden Victoria and given the strong relationship between Anthony Thompson and Danny O'Brien.

No question in my mind Robbo: he'll need to stand in Vic to enjoy strong support.

Perhaps an advertised $16,500 to a high of $18,700 tops.

Russian Camelot will stand at stud in the New South Wales Hunter Valley.

The Herald Sun has established Widden Stud is the frontrunner to secure the dual Group 1 winner, retired last month after a small tendon tear running second in the All-Star Mile at The Valley

Widden’s roster includes champion sires Zoustar and Nicconi.

Russian Camelot’s managing owner John Wheeler would not be drawn on the identity of the “Australian stud”.

“He will be going to an Australian stud, but I really want to leave it to the stud master to make the announcement, which he will do imminently,” Wheeler said.

“We’re very happy, it is sorted through, and delighted it has reached a conclusion.”

Russian Camelot won the South Australian Derby and Underwood Stakes last year.

He placed in three Group 1 races last spring, including the Makybe Diva Stakes (second), Caulfield Stakes (second) and Cox Plate (third) before running eighth in the Melbourne Cup.

“You always hope in your life that you might find a stallion,” Wheeler said.

“He’s yet to be successful (as a stallion), but if he is successful, there’s no reason to think he won’t add something to the Australian thoroughbred industry.

“We’re very happy we’re staying as substantial partners with the stud and we’re very happy to see him placed where he’s going.”

The owners and champion trainer Danny O’Brien have all “retained an interest” in the horse.

Russian Camelot amassed $2.39 million for connections, winning four of 11 career starts.

I thought this was very lazy journalism - it is in the public domain that Widden is setting up in Victoria so to assume that he will be in the Hunter is ill-conceived.

Ha ha ha ha ha. The Herald Sun and lazy journalism. Who'da thunk it. RC to Widden Vic has been unannounced news for some time.

It's entirely probable ex Herald-Sun racing writer Matt Stewart was the journalist's mentor.  Embarrassed

Is there much of an opportunity for this type of pedigree structure to work in Oz. I think it might be doubtful

Widden Stud has announced dual Group 1 winner Russian Camelot will stand at their Victorian property.

And in a further boost to Victoria’s breeding ranks, he will be joined by talented three-year-old Doubtland.

Russian Camelot, who was retired after his second placing in the All-Star Mile due to a tendon injury, will stand for $22,000.

The northern hemisphere bred star won the Group 1 SAJC Derby at just his fifth race start last year, and then took out the Underwood Stakes in the spring.

He ran third in last year’s Cox Plate behind Sir Dragonet, before taking on the Melbourne Cup.

His career finished with four wins from 11 stars and just over $2.3m in prizemoney.

“I have no doubt he will have a significant impact on our industry for years to come through his stud career," trainer Danny O’Brien said when announcing the horse’s retirement.

Doubtland was a standout two-year-old, claiming the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes, before claiming the Group 2 Danehill Stakes as a three-year-old.

He also finished fourth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

The son of Not A Single Doubt will stand for $16,500.

The talented duo will be joined Nicconi and Star Witness at Widden’s Romsey property, along with the likes of Magnus and Bel Esprit.

Thanks Gay.

Confirming what almost everyone involved in the industry knew, apart from the Herald Sun's racing and breeding "journalists".  Wink

Talking to some stud staff tonight, and no one wants to go down there and sort out a new stud.
Hope some Vic people are keen.
