Topic: Personal Relationships of PoliticiansPosted: 22 Mar 2021 at 10:25am |

With all the recent talk and sexual exposes in federal parliament it appears political leadership in Australia may have taken its toll on the personal relationships. From the
end of World War 2 to 1983 (38 years) the ALP had five leaders and the Liberals
had six leaders. None of those leaders were ever divorced, or to the best of my
knowledge, separated from their spouse. On the other hand since 1983 (the last 38
years) the ALP have had ten leaders and the Liberals seven leaders. It is of
interest that of those ten ALP leaders six have been divorced or separated from
their spouse and of those Liberal leaders three have been divorced not once,
but twice. I pose the
question is the pressure on politicians that much greater over the last 38
years than in the prior 38 years or is Whitlam Government’s passing of the “no fault divorce”, as part of the Family Law Act of 1975, the
reason divorce amongst politicians, and for that matter in the general community,
no longer considered as “shameful “ as
it was in those early post WW2 days ? |

Not confined to politicians Bob. Marriage is on the nose generally.

PT, as marriages are " on the nose " it follows there will be less divorces. I believe "try before you buy" has gained in popularity over the past 20 years or so, meaning no marriage or divorce is officially recorded.

I think it runs parallel to organized religion being on the nose and people choosing a less formal more flexible commitment arrangement.
Maybe a count of people in legal de facto relationships and legal severance of those should be included to get a more accurate number.

The number of divorces is only useful as a percentage of marriages. The obvious does seem to be happening though with less marriages there are no less less divorces but they are lasting nearly 2 years longer than they did 20 years ago, still failing but lasting longer with more committed people doing it. 1 in 3 still end in divorce.

LOL, BB must be the last of the "blame Whitlam" brigade, these are not things peculiar to Australia, divorce law changes would have mirrored trends elsewhere in the developed world, marriage as a legal protection is virtually redundant, de facto relationships are now well under the umbrella of the law, it really does not make a lot of difference in legal terms.

I thought there was a thread on this. It has come up a number of times most recently in the case of Beetrooter Barnyard who was complaining about the stress of politics and away time on marriage, and who can forget old mate Kevin Andrews was handing out his special relationship counselling vouchers. Might have got mixed up in other threads. Still hasn't gotten rid of the vouchers 7 years on.

That is Porter's solicitor. Not sure setting an attack dog like that on Louise Milligan will play well.

Max, I am not blaming Whitlam, I think the changing of the Family Law act was well over due, which would be one thing his government actually got right.
![]() I agree although marriages are in decline, de facto are on the rise and whether or not breakdowns of those relationships are recorded as "divorces" or "separations" would skew statistics of the number of broken relationships due to divorce.

PT, if one wanted to troll over the love lives of all politicians in Canberra we could go on for days, that is why I confined my initial post to party political leaders, for every Kevin Andrews there would be more Liberals, ALP and Independents in Canberra in the same boat.

Marriages are more akin to business partnerships than romance novels would allow, certainly a lot of people kept out of marriage, or if divorced, swore not to marry again, because of fear of getting burnt financially, but the law has caught up with that dodge, and now people in de facto set-ups have similar redress, albeit perhaps not as easily as through the Family Court. And of course the child support laws apply regardless of marital status of the parents.

Hey Bob, you were the one who dragged Whitlam into it as an option for the cause of ''the problem''

I'm not surprised politicians have high divorce rates, they are in a "theatrical" profession, and the partner would be hard pressed to detect where the acting stopped, and the "real" person began.

Where did that Kangaroo Court website, come out with that on Rebekah Giles when she acted for Brittany Higgins and Sarah Hanson Young in their recent defamation cases. Thought so, waited until it could bring her outburst to public's attention when she was acting for Porter from the conservative side of politics.

People call their defactos partners these days so you are sometimes unsure if they are talking about a business partner or a defacto.

PT, where did I use the words "the problem" ? I suggested the removal of " no fault " divorce was a possible reason, not a "problem ".

I'm old fashioned I guess I still prefer married. One daughter had her partner split after three years after she spent most of her inherited money (less than 1/4 left). Only because he didn't like the west and liked the good life. Which meant she had to spend more. And she loved it until they split. Even then he didn't want her to come back home. We apparently dragged her down. Nice to know he had such a high opinion of anyone living where they can afford to buy a house and still live. Although today I don't think that is even possible out here. A house of a friend went for over $900,000 and one across the road went for over $1 million.
They would of still split up if married I guess but maybe she wouldn't of been in the mess she was. She's back on her feet now due to a good job and good friends. And yes she back out west!

If you log onto YouTube you will see many "theatrical performances" by one Paul J Keating in parliamentary Question Time and he nicely fits into the category of the former leaders of the ALP I mentioned in my initial post.

Very interesting woman Rebekah Giles. She's had more than 100 operations to fix injuries she sustained in the tsunami. |

Yes she will appreciate that joke...not. As long as you do not take short odds , like the $1.24 Redemption did yesterday when she suggested for a lazy $4,000 she could pick up just under $1,000 in two hours..... "Forum GWS v St.Kilda, total points, under 156.5, odds $1.24 LOL Thank you They will struggle to even get to 100 today. $4000 x $1.24. basically a grand profit in 2 hours." Redemption has not posted since. |
