WA RSL has banned Welcome To Country & flying of Indigenous Flags at both Anzac Day & Remembrance Day Ceremonies. Seems reasonable to me. These two days should be to commemorate those fallen soldiers & not be used as a platform to push agendas unrelated. They have 363 other days per year to do that. And NRL football games

Gee you are slipping oneone, where is your outrage over Adam Bandt firing up the easily triggered lunatics on the right over the 250th anniversary of Cook's landing in April? PS, it would also have been a no brainer for Bob and his ''I hate Greens'' thread.

That welcome to country ceremony gets old after awhile. Fat old blokes wandering around in smoke, waving branches. If they were well built young stunners it would make for better viewing.

PT - just not sure what an Indigenous Welcoming Dance has to do with the commemoration of our fallen soldiers. As i said, they have another 363 days to do that as they please

Sorry oneone, I just thought you might escape the Sad Threads this is destined for by making it just another Indigenous bagging thread.

Hardly bagging Indigenous folk PT - neither is the RSL. Just that there is a time & place for most things. What has a Welcoming Dance got to do with Anzac Day. Australian soldiers were made up of many, many nationalities. Maybe they could do a few more before NRL games now they are not going to sing our National Anthem. Who knows - Izzy might turn up

You can't reverse one apparently. My AFLM thread caught fire after being condemned I put in a semi official requested for a reprieve but Whale is a hard man when administering the rules.

Oh i see - so now you are suggesting the Welcoming Dance Celebration replace our National Anthem ? It is totally irrelevant to the occasion. They can do it a hundred times a day as far as i'm concerned - just not at Anzac Day / Remembrance Day official functions. It has no more relevance to those days than the Greek Australians wanting to perform the Zorba - or Australian Chinese wanting to perform a Dragon Dance. Its actually just a distraction to what the days are all about

The Kiwis do Haka's at every festive or ceremonial opportunity and most sporting events. I dont think they are as dismissive of or hostile to their Indigenous people though. |

Not sure you can reasonably compare the two. The Haka is said to have originated from a native football game in 1889. Whilst it is widely used these days for all sorts of occasions it is still basically a war dance. Our indigenous Welcome Dance has no where near the history that the haka has (1976 - Ernie Dingo). It has also never been as widely accepted by all Australians as the Haka has been for New Zealanders. Possibly because of its tradition & performance. I mean its a bit more captivating than our version (refer Acacias valid comment above). Personally i find the whole thing embarrassing for them. Anyhow - i have no problem with it - on 363 out of 365 days of the year. Pretty reasonable i would have thought - unless you were out to prove a political point in wanting to do it on those 2 days.

The Maori culture of NZ was a much more uniform culture than our richly diverse Indigenous culture. The people of Sydney Cove would have viewed the people from the Kimberley region as alien to them as the British for example. These Welcome to Country ceremonies are a modern invention and have little to do with actual ancient Indigenous customs which varied greatly depending where you were. Just more virtue signalling in my opinion and not much honouring real pre European aboriginal culture.

Just to post something about the topic. When even the West Australian editorialises that the policy was wrong the RSL has now backtracked. The WA branch of the RSL has overturned a ban on the performance of Welcome to Country ceremonies and the flying of the Aboriginal flag at Anzac and Remembrance Day services after a public backlash. On Friday, it was revealed RSLWA introduced a ban in response to some members taking issue with the Ode of Remembrance being translated and delivered in Noongar at last year's Anzac dawn service in Fremantle. The veterans' organisation said at the time it did not support the performance of the ceremonies at any sites which commemorated those who died during the war. "While having utmost respect for the traditional owners of land upon which such sites and memorials are located, RSLWA does not view it appropriate that a Welcome to Country is used at sites that were specifically established to pay homage to those who died and who came from a wide range of cultural backgrounds," the RSLWA stated. The announcement drew swift and harsh criticism from state and federal politicians and today RSLWA chief executive John McCourt announced the policy had been withdrawn. "Given
the level of community reaction to RSLWA's advisory policy on cultural
matters relating to commemoration, this policy has now been withdrawn," a
statement read. "RSLWA is concerned that its position on the matter had unfortunately drawn misunderstandings of its intent. "RSLWA values and respects the Australian Indigenous community and, in particular, Indigenous veterans. "RSLWA accepts the policy may have been open to misinterpretation. "Its advisory policy will be reviewed and relaunched in the near future following further dialogue with interested parties." https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-23/wa-rsl-backs-down-on-aboriginal-flag-welcome-to-country-ban/11992416 |

Thanks Horlicks. Not surprised actually.....I thought it was a bold call in the first place. Was always going to cop criticism.....however I still question how relevant it is on those two days. The RSL didn’t seem to want to give much explanation it would seem.....easier to just tow the line I suppose

WE are one peoples --- Equal ---- One flag --one anthem.
Having been reared with migration when thousands came to the camps at Bathurst--- Cowra NSW ... men in one , women at the other , The western areas were swamped . Probably, due to that , when I walk into a room now I only see People. Not a blink as to where they come from. |

Both sides danced and shouted and threw themselves around ad nauseum , and I better shut up before they jump all over me again for being racist. A straight out Haka, and even a wander round in the smoke, would have been fine , but flippin' 'eck, it went on forever , from both sides. Fatty ask Joey who won the dance competition, before he realised he better shut up or he would cop the racism bit . It was nice to see the way they treated the little boy, ( Quaden is it? ) tho.
