Robin Williams, Oscar-Winning Actor, Dead at 63

| By Tony Maglio on August 11, 2014 @ 3:55 pmFollow @anthonymaglio

Legendary comedian and actor died on Monday

Legendary actor and comedian Robin Williams died on Monday, a suspected suicide. He was 63.

The Marin County Sheriff's Office Coroner Division made the following announcement, more to come:

On August 11, 2014, at approximately 11:55 am, Marin County Communications
received a 9-1-1 telephone call reporting a male adult had been located unconscious
and not breathing inside his residence in unincorporated Tiburon, CA. The Sheriff's
Office, as well as the Tiburon Fire Department and Southern Marin Fire Protection
District were dispatched to the incident with emergency personnel arriving on scene at
12:00 pm. The male subject, pronounced deceased at 12:02 pm has been identified as
Robin McLaurin Williams, a 63 year old resident of unincorporated Tiburon, CA.

An investigation into the cause, manner, and circumstances of the death is currently
underway by the Investigations and Coroner Divisions of the Sheriff's Office.
Preliminary information developed during the investigation indicates Mr. Williams was
last seen alive at his residence, where he resides with his wife, at approximately 10:00
pm on August 10, 2014. Mr. Williams was located this morning shortly before the 9-1-1
call was placed to Marin County Communications. At this time, the Sheriff's Office
Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a
comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.
A forensic examination is currently scheduled for August 12, 2014 with subsequent
toxicology testing to be conducted.

Robin Williams is the latest star to be the victim of a celebrity death hoax.

On Friday, the very unfunny Gobal Associated News claimed the actor “died while filming a movie in Kitzbühel, Austria early this morning.”

The pranksters went on to add, “Preliminary reports from Austrian Police officials indicate that the actor fell more than 50 feet to his death in a remote area of the Hahnenkamm mountains while on-set during the filming of a movie.”

It is NOT TRUE.

Williams took to Twitter Friday night to confirm he’s very much still alive.

“Despite rumors to the contrary, I will be in Savannah tomorrow night at the Johnny Mercer Theater,” he wrote.

when I told my daughter he had died she burst into tears...she idolises him....

 so, so talented...but so tortured...

if he hadn't done this, I've always been convinced he would wear out his brain and end up with dementia...

as I just said to my daughter, he was one of three people in this world who when interviewed, never needed the interviewer...he just took over and entertained...the other two being Billy Connolly and Dame Edna...

a very great loss and felt by everyone...

Robin was extraordinary when being interviewed. There was no-one finer at being interviewed.
I will remember his sharp wit during interviews, more than any other aspect of his career.
We just never knew where his interview would go, or what he would say. Razor sharp wit.
Would have made a superb dinner guest.

RIP Heart

There might have been better people to roam the planet, but as far as celebrities or entertainers are concerned, this man will be hard to beat.

Hugely talented, one of the best actors of the last 30 years, sharp wit, intelligent and lived life at optimum speed.

Very sad to see him leave this existence, but if there is a great showrrom in the sky then the entertainers who had gone beofre him had better move over because here comes the ultimate showman.

I can feel a Robin Williams movie weekend coming on.

Dead Poets Society, Good Morning Vietnam, Mrs Doubtfire among others sounds a great way to remeber an awesome talent.

I watched Mrs Doubtfire again last week-end...it never wears thin...the scene where he pigeons Pierce Brosnan at the restaurant and rattles off all the variants of intercourse is just belly-laugh material...don't think any other actor could have pulled it off...

also love The Birdcage...his tutoring of Nathan Lane to make him act heterosexual was just sublime acting...

as I said on facebook...with all the horrible things happening in the world, we stop to mourn the death of a man who tried to make it a happier place...

 may his memory live on...

FACE THE FACTS .    SO MANY OF THESE SUCCESSFUL ENTERTAINERS ARE MANIC by nature [ that's why they can be in high gear ] BUT what goes with highs are the LOWS .
Best example Johnny Okeefe .   had a trip into North Ryde Psychiatric to get it together , regularly.   He was so well liked and he was so appreciative.
THEN comes the manufactured moods.     Into the stimulant uppers and then into the downers. All in the one day.
When the bubble bursts , The story of today , keeps on repeating itself .     SAD SAD SAD

The floor went from under me when l heard the news.

Just keep fighting - please. When the lows come, if you can't fight wait, wait till you can, this is the hardest thing to do l know but over my life if it helps l've learnt things do get better.

Henry Winkler Recalls Robin Williams' 'Happy Days' Debut

5:22 PM PDT 8/11/2014 by Lesley Goldberg

Robin Williams Dies of Suspected Suicide

Winkler, who starred for 11 seasons as Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on the Garry Marshall comedy, recalled Williams' first day on the set. Williams was found dead Monday of an apparent suicide. He was 63.

"Here I am playing this man of very few words and I'm watching brilliance explode like fireworks every 10 or 15 seconds," Winkler told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday afternoon.

Happy Days helped to launch Williams' TV career after he guest-starred on a season-five episode of the comedy as Mork, an alien from the planet Ork. The character proved so popular that it led to a spinoff, Mork & Mindy, which aired from 1978 to 1982 on ABC.

"They couldn't find anybody to play this character that Garry's son suggested," Winkler recalled, noting Happy Days rehearsals typically began Monday mornings but the role was not cast until Wednesday. "This young man comes in and we started rehearsing and I quickly realized I had one job: to keep a straight face.

"What ever you said, he inhaled out of the air and then threw it back at you," he continued. "There was not one time it came out the same. There was not one time it was not truly, endlessly and fervently funny. You saw it and your mouth dropped. You couldn't believe it. I've worked with a lot of people and there is and was no one quite like him."

Winkler also recalled how the script process varied between Happy Days and Mork & Mindy, with the latter typically 15 pages shorter and routinely featuring a note that often read: "Robin will do something here." "After a while, I don't think they even bothered writing comic pieces for him because he was uncontainable in this universal way," he said. "He was touched. He was given something."

While Winkler did not keep in touch with Williams in the years that followed — he was hard-pressed to recall their last exchange — the actor described Williams as an "incredible and truly gifted comedian" who was "deeply emotional" with his drama roles.

Winkler later recalled days on the Happy Days set, which was close to the Mork & Mindy soundstage where Williams and co-star Jonathan Winters would frequently walk to lunch and start improvising on the street. "These two men together, crowds would come. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, but it was always better than anything you've ever done," he said.

Conan O'Brien Gives Robin Williams Emotional On-Air Tribute

8:00 PM PDT 8/11/2014 by Aaron Couch

Conan O'Brien Tribute to Robin Williams - H 2014.

TBS/Screengrab

Conan O'Brien saluted Robin Williams during his TBS show Monday.

O'Brien learned of Williams' death during the episode's taping and relayed the news to his audience. "This is shocking and horrifying and so upsetting at every level," said O'Brien.

Guest Will Arnett's voice trembled as he talked about Williams, saying "As funny as he was — he truly was one of the all-time greats — he was even better as a person."

Williams died of a suspected suicide Monday. Other stars have been paying tribute to the late Oscar star.

Fox News makes blunder in reporting Robin Williams' death

Robin Williams' fans frustrated

Rachael Jones reports from Hollywood Boulevard where Robin Williams fans were hoping to pay their respects at his star on the Walk of Fame.

Fox News host Shepard Smith has apologised for calling Robin Williams a "coward" following the actor’s death by suicide.

It was the second blunder by the American cable news network after another anchor used incorrect footage of what was meant to be Williams in one of his most famous roles as Mrs Doubtfire.

Smith made the comment on Monday night during coverage of the Academy Award-winning actor-comedian’s death. He was speaking about how Williams’ death might affect his three adult children.

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith has apologised for calling Robin Williams a 'coward'.
Fox News anchor Shepard Smith has apologised for calling Robin Williams a 'coward'. Photo: AP

"It's hard to imagine, isn't it? You could love three little things so much, watch them grow, they’re in their mid-20s, and they’re inspiring you, and exciting you, and they fill you up with the kind of joy you could never have known," Shepard said.

Advertisement "And yet, something inside you is so horrible or you’re such a coward or whatever the reason that you decide that you have to end it. Robin Williams, at 63, did that today."

Critics took to social media to lambast the host.

Now Shepard has apologised. In a statement online he said: "To the core of my being, I regret it. It just came out of my mouth. And I'm so sorry. And to anyone and their families who see that, I am sorry."

Fox News had no immediate comment. Shepard was due on air later on Tuesday.

And in the rush to bring the most comprehensive coverage of Robin Williams' death to viewers, Fox made the embarrassing video blunder seen below.

As anchor Greta Van Susteren talked to former CNN host Larry King about his relationship with the great American comedian, an overlay of Williams' past roles was played in the background.

Among them the dance from WIlliams' 1993 film Mrs Doubtfire.

Viewers well versed in Williams' roles were quick to point out that the footage was of anyone but the comedian.

Agree Jujuno, Disney's response seems appropriate on two levels. His death is very sad for his family, friends and billions of fans but perhaps a relief from the mental anguish he's long battled. Robin's brain operated on high fidelity for so long it must have been nigh on impossible to wind down. Anyway we celebrate his genius and give thanks we got to experience his incredible talent.

don't kid yourself, AA, that "help" is always beneficial...sometimes you just have to work through it yourself...

I had one time when things got too much for me...my depression kicked in and I rang Helpline...they talked to me on the phone until the ambos turned up...took me to hospital where I was offered a night in the psych unit at POW...I accepted, trying to do the "right thing"...they then stripped me of all my possessions...which is normal...and I was led to a freezing cold, sterile room, where I was just left...I went out into a general area to make a cup of tea to warm up and was confronted by a cigarette-bumming druggo who was screaming the place down...and no-one attempted to stop her harassing anyone else...I knew I would be in worse shape staying there so I asked to be discharged...they simply made me sign a form, gave me back my things and sent me out into the night...it was past midnight by then...no transport available, so I walked the five miles back home, put myself to bed for three days with some valium to relax me and gradually came out of the black hole...my eldest daughter fed me as best she could with her limited skills and did the shopping and housekeeping...I owe more to her than all the so-called professionals at the hospital...

this is not an isolated incident...another time they dosed me up on meds in emergency, then discharged me...I was nearly run over crossing the road at the Spot, being so dizzy I couldn't focus...took myself up to the Royal hotel, got a room (with the most luxuriously soft bed I have ever felt) and slept off the meds before heading home next day...to three more days climbing out of that deep dark hole...

anyone who hasn't been down the well really doesn't know how bad it gets...and, like Robin Williams, I am not ashamed to talk of it, especially if it might help or comfort others...just knowing that you are not alone suffering this dreadful condition sometimes helps...
