Thoroughbred breeding is often described as both an art and a science, with the most successful pedigrees blending influential bloodlines to maximise performance potential. The case of Calandagan, as referenced through Calayana and Gleneagles, offers a fascinating look into how key sires and dams shape the racing and breeding landscape in Australia and abroad.

Calandagan: The Breeding Masterclass

Calandagan represents a strategic fusion of proven bloodlines, orchestrated by the Princess Zahra, and Her Father the Aga Khan, a nod to the careful selection and planning that goes into top-level breeding. The emphasis is on leveraging strengths and compensating for gaps in the pedigree, with Calayana and Gleneagles serving as prime examples of this methodology.

Calayana: Pedigree Analysis

Calayana, the dam referenced as “Calandagans Dam”, is notable for what is absent and present in her pedigree. She has NO Swells – meaning there is no Sadler’s Wells bloodline, and thus, no Galileo, who is a direct Sadler’s Wells son. However, Calayana’s pedigree is also lacking  in other influential sires:

·         Mr Prospector (Mr P)

·         Roberto

·         Nureyev

·         Coup De Folie

·         Halo

Calayana’s pedigree is further distinguished by the inclusion of Danehill, a legendary sire known for imparting speed and versatility to his progeny. This sets her apart from many contemporary lines, particularly as she lacks the Sadler’s Wells (Swells) influence and, by extension, Galileo. Also the lack  of Rough Shod, could also be exploited as she also adds a layer of durability and class, while the combination of Mr Prospector, Roberto, Nureyev, Coup De Folie, and Halo creates a robust foundation for both performance and future breeding potential when included in a breeding plan.

In contrast, Gleneagles brings a different set of strengths to the table. Notably, Gleneagles does not carry the Danehill line, instead introducing the influential Galileo (derived from Sadler’s Wells) into the mix, hence Rough Shod as well. This adds depth to the pedigree, with significant reinforcement of Roberto, Mr Prospector, and Halo, (though not via Coup De Folie.) Gleneagles also serves to reinforce Secretariat’s presence within Calayana’s lineage, and crucially, introduces a triple dose of Hail To Reason (HTR). This strategic addition compensates for the absence of Roberto and Halo in Calayana, strengthening the stamina and soundness elements in the resulting progeny.

Altogether, the pairing of Calayana and Gleneagles is a textbook example of complementary breeding. By balancing their respective strengths and addressing gaps—such as the injection of HTR and Galileo, and the careful management of Danehill and Sadler’s Wells influences— copyright © take2 dec 2025
