A few years ago, I played golf semi regularly with a guy who owned a large furniture/white goods store.
He was telling me that some manufacturers of white goods would consistently invite him to marquee events. He was a cantankerous old pr1ck, and had zero interest in networking and refused all offers. One day, when declining yet another invitation he said to the guy, if you’re trying to bribe me, which is effectively what you’re doing, then just give me a truckload of grange.. And thought nothing more of it, until the mrs rang in a tizz one day. “Jack, there’s a truck outside full of wine, what are we going to do with it.” He said they threw boxes in every spare wardrobe in the house and dumped stacks of boxes under the house. He used to get a chuckle when he and the mrs went for their budget Chinese, and everyone used to look at them like they were loaded (he was!)

I checked out two areas that would have taken days to get into town by public transport when I left Sydney - Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills on this Trip Planner thing. Blow me down - it reckons it takes 44-48 minutes. I will take their word for it, with a grain of salt. So I searched farther afield. Western Sydney has worst access to public transport, prompting $20b spending callMarch 15, 2022 Commuters in Western Sydney have the worst access to public transport
and the least number of services after decades of neglect on
infrastructure spending. Of Sydney’s 33 local government areas, the third with the best access to
public transport are all in the East or Northern District. Sydney City is the LGA with the highest access to public transport with a
score of 52, followed by Burwood with a score of 30, which are both
considered to be in the Eastern City using the Greater Sydney
Commission’s district boundaries. Waverley, Randwick and North Sydney
rounded out the top five. In contrast, the least accessible LGA, Wollondilly, had an accessibility
score of just two, followed by the Blue Mountains with three.
Hawkesbury had a score of four and Camden six. Nurse Marian Suters takes at least four different trains, buses, and sometimes light rail to get from Penrith to Randwick. |

I am afraid JJ has copped it from all and sundry regarding her recent posts...
1. Sydney public transport is not what she cracks it up to be 2. Cellaring a bottle or two of Grange has proven to be an excellent investment, especially it could be sold later at an auction for 255 times its purchase price 3. One is not necessarily a poseur if one drinks fine wine on special occasions |

I like how JJ suggests Brisbane has a good public transport network as well, it took them a hundred years to realise Redcliffe night want train access and they've still not realised having the trains cross the river could be beneficial.
Only busses in and out of the Gabba. And I won't even start on the road network. Clearly you've not tried to navigate around Brisbane at all JJ.

I have been to Brissie at least a dozen times. I usually stay at Quay West, near the gardens. I use the free city circle bus for a lot of weekday travel to places, including accessing the train up to Nambour...or over to Southbank. On weekends it doesn't run, but there are regular pay buses from the next street. I have never used a taxi in Brissie because the buses go where I need to go. We sometimes walk to a wharf and cross the river by the cats. Nothing is much trouble.
Melbourne is total annoyance in comparison.

1. What a load of hogwash. I can get to anywhere in Sydney, easily, by public transport. In good time. Tlaz is just being obdurate. 2. Like most things bought for investment, the problem becomes when is the time to sell. If you keep drinking it, there isn't any to sell... 3. A poseur is a wine drinker who boasts about how expensive the wine is. If the cork fits, Bob... |

Ok the line about not having trains crossing the river was a joke, but you've obviously not navigated your way around Brisbane much if you think the public transport network works well.
Attempt to get to the Gabba from any part of Brisbane, especially the northern suburbs, it is achievable but it requires 2-3 changes of transport vehicle and usually swapping between multiple methods. Citycat is great but it isn't intergrated well into the network, surely wouldn't be to hard to intergrate the citycat and bus networks? Free public transport with event tickets is a great idea but the citycats aren't covered by this. The road network is 20 years behind. I've been to the MCG when there is also an event at AAMI Park and I've been to plenty of events at the Gabba, I can tell you that 30,000 people disperse much worse from the Gabba than much greater numbers disperse from the MCG precinct after an event. The stadium at the Gold Coast is even worse.

getting to and from the MCG is a pain. A two mile walk after getting off the train. And a tunnel of people going back to the train afterwards.
In Sydney, the train finishes next to the Olympic stadium at Homebush, and for the SCG, the light rail stop is a fifty metre stroll across Moore Park. Far easier to access than the G. I've never been to the Gabba, so I'll take your word for it, but I have never had a problem with public transport in Brisbane. Your buses are clean and reliable, time-wise. The cats are an extra cost, but hey, it's a nice ride. |

I think that is normal for most city stadiums. Unless you live next door, you always have to make your way there by various means. To get to the SCG from Penrith, you have to take a train then a bus or light rail. To get there from Manly, it would be a ferry and a bus, then a short walk.

My daughter had no trouble getting to the Gabba from the city, when she was there a while back. She had an appointment with someone, nearby.

Nobody in Melbourne walks from the CBD, the two mile walk to which you refer, to the MCG, there are two stations within 5 minutes walk to the ground. Richmond is on the southern side of the ground and Jolimont is on the northern side, both those stations are one stop on from Flinders Street station ( the CBD ). JJ, I don't know who went to the MCG with, but they could not have been locals.

Each time we have been to Flemington races we are amazed at how quickly they move the crowds at the end of the day, with the big days, like Cup day. Plenty of trains and none of them packed to the gills. Everyone gets a seat. Compared to that, getting away from Randwick is a nightmare. Crammed on busses like sardines. Taxi lines a mile long and no taxis. May be different now as havnt been sinve Winx,s last race.

To those who are unfamiliar with Flemington the train stops at the track, you walk off the train platform and you are in the course. Just like the MCG . Melbourne's founding fathers built train stations right next to sporting venues, Caulfield, Moonee Valley and Sandown are right along side train stations as are the Tennis Centre and AAMI Park, even Kooyong, the old site of the Australian Tennis Open, was next to a train station.

Bob...do you take everything literally? I got off at Jolimont...then it seemed like a two-mile hike to the gates... I was being facetious. I have been to Melbourne so often, I know the city backwards. Have you ever left Victoria? |

The light rail stops virtually at the main gate of Randwick. It takes tons more people than buses. Yes, it is very different. |

RL Grand final was played smack bang in the middle of the Randwick spring carnival ( Derby Day I think ) somehow we all got there ( in my teens ) trams stopped right outside both venues , trams parked up inside the course on the corner of Alison Rd. and Doncaster Ave , what a bottleneck for Anzac Pde , for some , still 70K + at the races , and 65-75K at the footy , all winners posted after each race on the scoreboard , getting home for most was no joy , but the winners , straight to the nearest watering hole .

No, I have not been to the SCG, But I have been to more racetracks than you would have ever dream about. What do you think I did for 35 years as a full time punter when you were sitting at home having your banana smoothies ? Throw in tracks in the UK, France, Canada , USA and Hong Kong. Lucky Star, could have written that song about all the racetracks I have attended.

We were in Melbourne a few years ago and from Oakleigh station we got to everything we wanted to see in Melbourne easily, as a couple of Qlders with little idea how to get around Melbourne. Not sure why you complain of how far the train stations are from the MCG, not really sure how you could expect them to be much closer, or do you expect to jump off the train and into your seat? The Gabba is hopeless when an event is on, buses out and thats it, generally quite a long wait to get on one unless you get out of the ground well before the finish. Lang Park is better, buses service it during events, Roma Street or Milton Stations are also walking distance (further than Jolimont or Richmond from the MCG but so maybe not for you) plus Lang Park is walking distance from the city centre and Caxton St provides a few venues for after match refreshments, so the crowd disperses quite well. Still as I've said, I've been in Melbourne when both the MCG and AAMI have had matches on at the same night and the crowd dispersed much better than even Lang Park, I suspect this Melbourne thing is another thing like Latrell Mitchell with you.

No. You read me wrong. I do not dislike Melbourne...just their transport system. It is annoying.
I like Brissie and have no problem with theirs. As for the Latrell Mitchell 'thing'...he's in my good books, at present. But I still think he's more use to us in the centres... |

If you happen to be " filthy rich " here is an opportunity you should not let pass by. I received an email today from Penfolds suggesting I could purchase a bottle of their 2018 Penfolds Grange. The bottle was available @ $1,000 or in a pack of six for $6,000. They suggested that anywhere between 2028 and 2068 would be the peaking years to drink it. I doubt I will be around in 2068 to partake in any bottle of any wine, that is so far down the track that the ALP's pie- in- the- sky reduction in nasty emissions to 43 % will still be on their agenda.

Why is that people who want to retain the money they have earned are considered “greedy” , whereas those who want to take that money off them are not considered to be “greedy “ ?
