I dont have a good story today.
Lets all spare a thought for the animal fire victims, domestic and wild, and send a few dollars their way via WIRES or the Koala Hospital .

NSW koala hospital flooded with donations after bushfires

http://schema.org/person" data-id="44" data-m="{"i":44,"p":41,"n":"authorName","t":"name","o":3}"> Emily McPherson

Australians have opened their hearts and wallets to help save NSW's koala population which has been decimated by the fires, raising almost $350,000 in the space of days.

The donations, made via an online fundraiser, will go to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.

As well as nursing 18 injured koalas back to health, the hospital is mobilising the production and distribution of drinking stations to help give dehydrated koalas a chance of surviving in the wild.

Koala Conservation Australia president Sue Ashton said the hospital made the call this morning to triple the amount of drinking stations it will roll out, thanks to the generous donations of the public.

"Originally we were aiming to do 30, we have upped the number to 100 because we have gotten so many donations," Ms Ashton said.

"It's just so heartwarming and fabulous that people are showing that they care."

More than two-thirds of the koala's habitat in the Lake Innes Nature Reserve was destroyed last week when the fires first ripped through the area. It was estimated at the time that 350 koalas had perished out of a total of 600.

However, parts of the reserve are still burning and together with the toll from yesterday's destruction, the number of koala deaths is expected to increase.

"Because of the intensity of the fires we are not finding many bodies. The fires basically cremated the wildlife. It was so intense they have just been incinerated," Ms Ashton said.

Many of the surviving koalas are suffering from severe dehydration.

"We have had some little koalas coming out of the fire areas, they are just lying down, they are so dehydrated. We have lost a few who have just given up I think," she said.

Wildlife workers are not yet able to enter the bushfire zone, but production on the drinking stations is already well underway.

A local manufacturer in Port Macquarie had been contracted to complete one drinking station a day, Ms Ashton said.

Another manufacturer in Inverell, northern NSW, will produce more drinking stations to be sent directly to Lismore to help the koalas in the Northern Rivers region.

One positive to come out of the bushfire tragedy was the research wildlife workers planned to carry out as part of the management of the drinking stations, Ms Ashton said.

"We are installing cameras with the drinking stations so we can monitor what wildlife is coming and what their behaviours are," she said.

"We are going to document all of this, so the knowledge that we gain we can share with other wildlife organisations across Australia and they can adapt it to their particular area. So it's good research that is actually going to come out of this terrible tragedy."

Of the 18 injured koalas in the hospital's care, many were starting to make a good recovery, Ms Ashton said.

"Even some of the first ones that we got through with the burnt paws, they are starting to get out of their baskets and move around," she said.

"They were just curled up in little brown balls to begin with and they are gradually starting to get out of their basket. So that is absolutely fabulous."

Fake rhino horn invented by Oxford University to flood market and take profit out of poaching

Scientists have created fake rhino horn using horse hair and hope it could be used to flood the market and drive down the price so that poaching would no longer be profitable.

Powdered rhino horn is a popular aphrodisiac in Chinese medicine and can command high prices, often because sellers mix it with erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra.

But now scientists at the University of Oxford and Fudan University, Shanghai, have shown it is possible to bundle horse hair together in a way that mimics the material.

The horn of the rhinoceros is not a horn like that of a cow, but a tuft of hair that grows tightly-packed and bound together by natural glue from sebaceous glands on the nose of the animal.

The new approach allowed researchers to fabricate samples that were confusingly similar to real rhino horn in look and feel.

Co-lead author, Professor Fritz Vollrath, from the University of Oxford’s Department of Zoology, said: "It appears from our investigation that it is rather easy as well as cheap to make a bio-inspired hornlike material that mimics the rhino’s extravagantly expensive tuft of nose hair.

“We leave it to others to develop this technology further with the aim to confuse the trade, depress prices and thus support rhino conservation."

Rhinos are critically endangered because of the trade in its horn. The new material is easily moulded into a rhino horn shape and has an underlying structure that, when cut and polished, is remarkably similar to that of the real horn.

Co-author, Ruixin Mi, from the Department of Macromolecular Science, Fudan University, said: ‘Our study demonstrates that materials science can contribute to fundamental issues in biology and conservation.

“The fundamental structure of the rhino horn is a highly evolved and tough fibre reinforced bio-composite and we hope that our attempts to copy it will not only undermine the trade in rhino horn but might also find uses as a novel bio-inspired material.”

The research was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

All in the mind gay3....    We will learn one day that Viagra style poison is killing / maiming more people than the false idea of it being some magic sexual assistance.

Remember when blood pressure is elevated to improve penis blood flow , such things as aneurysms, Heart Conditions , Pulmonary and many other danger zones are also put under great strain.
They even say , viagra doesn't work without natures stimulation , so why bother ,    Go get a friend who offers that visual stimuli and you won't need to make some Drug Company rich.

I'll bet Donald Trump doesn't need Viagra .

Animal intuity should never be taken lightly Heart

Angie Versteeg-Lowe to Friend of the Horse

A big giant thank you to this big giant amazing horse named Heza. On Friday during an OHSET training ( Oregon high school equestrian team) this horse refused to move. He just stood there, and stared. Something he has never done before he’s always very compliant.
My daughters team coach went over to see what was wrong; she also sensing something not quite right checked her watch and found out that she was having an SVT moment( super ventricle tachycardia) Her heart rate was 186 bpm. Much higher and she could’ve passed out or worse. She didn’t recognize that she was in trouble but her horse did. Because of his quick thinking we were able to get her heart rate down without incident.
This amazing gentle giant actually saved my daughter. I will never be able to repay him enough for what he did for us that day Heart

We underestimate the intelligence and the dedication of our animals ..

That heart rate was a shocker ... machine gun style.    Could have been tragic aye ...
I've heard the term charley horse and not known what it means .
Blood clots ( especially lung ) will cause symptoms similar to those described .
Put it this way ..   Needs investigation.

Wombat cull called off following concerns from Traditional Owners

It was revealed on Tuesday that the culling of wombats in South Australia will not go ahead despite approval from the state’s department of environment and water.

Earlier this week, the department approved the shooting of the animal following complaints from a farmer who noted damage to his equipment which was allegedly caused by running the wombats over, reported the ABC.

The land is being leased to the farmer through the Aboriginal Lands Trust (ALT) on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula near Point Pearce where the cull of up to 200 Southern hairy-nosed wombats would have taken place.

It was the ALT who, on behalf of the farmer, applied for and received the permit to humanely kill the animals but complaints from traditional owners saw the ALT retract their decision.

"The ALT has resolved to work with all parties to seek an alternative solution to the proposed culling of wombats which were hindering farming activity," said John Chester, the Aboriginal Lands Trust chief executive told the ABC.

"The application to cull the wombat colony was submitted in good faith last year and with the support of the Point Pearce community, the ALT and other stakeholders.

"The animals also pose a potential health risk to the community due to mange infestation.”

Earlier this week Traditional Owner and Adjahdura/Narungga and Ngadjuri Elder Quenten Agius told the ABC that the wombats are “part of a storyline that travels way back” and expressed serious concerns about the plan.

“We talk about evolution and everything through these animals,” he said. “I understand that the farmer has got an issue with the wombats but at the end of the day, these wombats have got to be looked after.”

When Mr Agius heard the cull had been called off, the ABC reported he was emotional over the decision.

Wombat cull approved by SA Government following request from local Lands Trust

Updated

Wombats on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula will be culled after the Indigenous Lands Trust (ILT) received a permit to humanely destroy the animals.

Key points:

  • The South Australian Government approved the humane cull of wombats on the Yorke Peninsula
  • An Aboriginal elder has expressed serious concerns, saying wombats should be "looked after"
  • The cull follows the stoning death of one wombat and the shooting death of 12 others in 2019

The planned cull will take place near Point Pearce — on Aboriginal-owned farmland.

According to traditional owner and Adjahdura/Narungga and Ngadjuri elder Quenten Agius, the farmer who rents the land from the Aboriginal community is having his equipment broken when he runs over the animals.

The farmer was unavailable for comment and has engaged lawyers.

The South Australian Department for Environment and Water said it "regularly received" applications for "the destruction of wombats and other native animals".

"The owner of Point Pearce, Aboriginal Lands Trust, applied for and received a permit for the humane destruction of wombats," it said in a statement.

"A decision to approve a permit takes into account the species abundance, the nature of the impact caused by the species, human safety, and economic considerations.

"Strict codes of practice and animal welfare standards also apply."

The planned cull follows the shooting death of 12 hairy-nosed wombats in 2019 on the Yorke Peninsula.

It also follows an incident on South Australia's west coast in December last year, when an off-duty police officer stoned a wombat to death.

Part of traditional stories

Mr Agius, who is not a member of the Indigenous Lands Trust, has expressed serious concerns about the plan to cull up to 200 local wombats.

"I understand that the farmer has got an issue with the wombats but at the end of the day, these wombats have got to be looked after," he said.

"They're part of a storyline that travels way back; we talk about evolution and everything through these animals."

Mr Agius said he was opposed to culling any wombats and believed exploring other options about managing the marsupials was a better option.

He also said there was a lack on consultation in the process of approving the cull.

"At the end of the day, this is money driven," Mr Agius said.

"Machinery is getting destroyed, wombats are in the way, and less product that [the farmer] makes is less income for the Lands Trust.

"Wombats should be looked after. There's a large population there, there's a lot of farmland there.

"We could actually produce an area for the wombats to sustain life and to keep colonies connected."

Permit went through proper process

State Liberal MP for the seat of Narungga, Fraser Ellis, said the planned cull was not a case of a farmer wantonly killing wombats.

"Local bodies there have passed democratic motions to resolve to get this permit to help control the number of wombats," he said.

"In terms of it being portrayed as a farmer wanting to destroy a number of wombats on a whim, that's not the case.

"My understanding is that the Point Pearce Aboriginal Council and the Aboriginal Lands Trust both support this permit and are worried about the viability of their paddock and their farm, which poses a direct threat to the Point Pearce community itself."

Cull is 'excessive'

Wildlife researcher with the University of Adelaide, Mike Swinbourne, said wombat populations on the Yorke Peninsula were some of the most fragmented in the country.

"Most of the colonies on the Yorke Peninsula are very small and isolated from each other, so there are no real linkages," he said.

"The only really sizable one is the one on the west coast, around Point Pearce.

"There are probably around 600 to 800 wombats on the entire Yorke Peninsula, so if you're talking about culling 200, you're talking about 30 per cent of the entire population, which is just excessive."

Dr Swinbourne said there was "absolutely no justification" for killing so many of the creatures.

"If you were to cull that many wombats, you would decimate the population on the peninsula, and you could not justify that," he said.

He said while he had "sympathy" for the impact wombats had on farming land, there needed to be a balance between managing animal populations and farming practices.

Point Pearce Community Council chairman Edward Newchurch declined to comment.

Man admits to his involvement in running down 21 kangaroos on NSW Far South Coast

A man charged with torturing and causing the death of kangaroos last September has changed his plea to guilty.

Key points:

  • A man changes his plea to guilty for killing three kangaroos at Tura Beach last year
  • Court documents show Ashley Sorenson was the owner of the Mazda utility used to run down the animals
  • CCTV footage placed Mr Sorenson in the passenger seat on the night of the attack in which 21 kangaroos were killed in the beachside suburb

WARNING: This story contains images that may disturb some readers.

Ashley Sorenson, 33, pleaded guilty in the Bega Local Court to his involvement in killing three out of 21 eastern grey kangaroos at Tura Beach on the NSW Far South Coast last year.

He previously entered a plea of not guilty to the charge in November 2019.

Kangaroos frequently visited the beachside suburb and were accustomed to human contact.

Court documents alleged Sorenson was the owner of the ACT-plated Mazda utility used to run over the animals.

CCTV footage placed Sorenson in the passenger seat on the night of the attack along with a driver and another passenger.

The driver of the vehicle and co-accused Nathan Sanger, 20, was convicted in the Bega Local Court in November 2019 to causing the death of 21 eastern grey kangaroos.

He was given a two-year jail sentence in the Bega Local Court in November 2019 to be served as an intensive corrections order and was ordered to spend up to 500 hours' community service caring for orphaned animals at Potoroo Palace.

Court documents alleged Sorenson encouraged Sanger to run over the kangaroos and at times took control of the steering wheel to drive into the animals.

After the incident police located Sorenson's vehicle, which appeared to have sustained recent damage to its front.

It also had blood stains and kangaroo fur stuck to it.

Sorenson's lawyer requested the matter be moved to another courthouse for sentencing in order to be closer to the accused's new residence in Goulburn.

The court heard Sorenson had a history of drug and alcohol dependency issues.

Magistrate Doug Dick told the court Sorenson's criminal history was "far more extensive" than his co-accused.

Sorenson's bail is continued and he is due to be sentenced in the Queanbeyan Local Court on April 20, 2020.
