I don't think the American Civil War had as much to do with slavery, as people fondly imagine. It was also very firmly a matter of state's rights, within a federation. Even the great General Lee, had this to say:

“So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that slavery is abolished.”

Lee, but for whose military genius the Civil War would have been a brief affair, the North possessing overwhelmingly clear advantages as a combatant, except perhaps in military leadership, agonized over his loyalties, to his state Virginia, and to the nation, such was the thinking of the times, he decided his State's interests had to be primary. If they pull down his statues, they really have lost the plot. But, if any man is to "blame" for the Civil War turning into a prolonged blood-bath, it is he. We might say similar about Lyndon Johnson, and the dreadful Vietnam conflict, but is the Johnson space centre going to be re-named. One sees that do-gooders are blind to the big picture.

So there was no civil war? I am sure there were more than one reason for it, but it happened. People took up arms and killed fellow Americans. The losers should have been stricken from history not memorialised as heroes with statues and monuments.

I see states as being an irrelevancy, if they cannot secede, provided that is overwhelmingly voted by their inhabitants. Otherwise, it is like marriage, with no possibility of divorce. If you can't leave the union, without bringing military assault, then that is hardly something to celebrate. In the end, one sees that "freedom" has many interpretations.

Geez max, you have been telling us for over a week in multiple threads that you are offended by people marching for their rights, but now you say having a civil war is ok. Confused

"Fellow Americans" ? That is a narrow way of looking at it, and largely emotive, "fellow humans" is far to be preferred. But don't forget, it was the North that invaded the South. If a state freely enters a federation, why should it be prevented from leaving, freely ? It might as well not exist, as a state, if it cannot. It just becomes an arbitrary administrative division of the "feds", otherwise. I can see why the South fought, other than to retain slavery.

There would have been no war, if those states were allowed to leave the union. Obviously there was an empire-building (or maintaining) mentality in Washington that would not accept it. Would slavery have persisted in the South ? Probably not, as the economically far more powerful North, could have squeezed it out, by trade sanctions, if that were their wont, But was that really their wont ? Let's not be overly romanticizing the Civil War as a crusade against slavery, wars were, and still are, largely fought over control of resources.

The beginning of the Civil War was all about State Rights , with Lincoln and the North fighting to preserve the Union. That’s why you had abolitionists like Lee fighting for the South and slave owners fighting for the North. It’s interesting that many abolitionists like Lincoln didn’t want the freed slaves in the country . They wanted them returned to Africa and money was raised to do just that . Liberia was the result and I think these days is still a bit of a mess like most Southern Africa countries . I don’t think there are many true heroes to come out of the American Civil War.

If it stays up long enough, any statue will eventually cop more sh1t than what the pigeons can muster, such are the fashions and foibles of humanity. I don't expect to see one "erected" (ahem) to Bonking Billy.

Bill tried to use Chloe as a prop during his electioneering, it didn't work. Morrison is looking more entrenched than ever, Albo won't beat him either.

An anthropologist observed long ago, that the inordinately thick skulls of indigenes, was a result of selection processes at work, in an environment of frequent inter-tribal warfare, and intra-tribal squabbles. But as Fawlty said, whatever you do, don't talk about the "war" !

Silly comment. What is the difference in being a patriot to a state, and the country it is part of ?

Next thing they will start on is our war memorials.  Might find a bit of resistance when that starts.

It is a Republican Senate bill backed in consultation with the military.

Renaming of Military installations and removal of monuments is a Republican proposed Bill. Trump is the only person opposing it.This will be a big issue.
