Before Explosive Jack who was the last horse to win two Derbies in an Australian season? Delicacy - 2015?

1972/73 - Dayana (Major wins - (VRC, SAJC, WATC, WATC Australian Derbys, WATC Perth Cup)

Is that correct?

Stormy Rex won three in 1977. Was he the most recent?

Dayana is the only horse to win 4

If you count New Zealand, Gloaming won 3 (the AJC Derby and both the New Zealand Derbies)

Already a remarkable achievement with 3 Derbies on the mantelpiece. Clap

Would be awesome if he could make it 4 at Eagle Farm in the QTC Derby.

Voyager.....there’s no way he’d run in the Ramsden, it’s next Saturday!

For me EJ represents the most enjoyable aspect of the sport of horse racing.  I spotted this guy winning on debut at Swan Hill over the summer & to watch him mature, work through his grades to become a dual G1 winner is really satisfying.

The likes of Silver Sharpe, Stormy Rex & Dayana didn’t go on with things as older horses, but hopefully this guy has more majors ahead as a 4yo & 5yo.

And whilst I couldn’t begrudge connections from accepting $$$$ from Hong Kong........fingers crossed he continues racing locally.

Before my time but his record is an amazing read, especially when you look at the place getters in those 3 races:

AJC Derby - Planet Kingdom & Gunsynd
VRC Derby - Gay Icarus & Royal Show
QTC Derby - Sunset Glen & Gunsynd

That’s some seriously good horses he beat as 3yo’s

Have to say he was very impressive today. Thought the ride was pretty average but he was just way too good for that lot. A nice story winning 3 derbies. Hope he can go on with it later in the year.

Yep, until 1973 there were two New Zealand Derbies, one run at Christchurch, the other in Auckland. They were amalgamated in 1973 and the race is now run at Ellerslie (Auckland).

Dalray was another champion who won both Derbies in NZ.

No - not including NZ Derbies. Only Derbies won in Australia in an Australian racing season.

Send him to Queensland. It would be great if he could find another race 5 or 6 weeks after that over 2400. But that race doesn’t exist...

As it is he’ll be spelled, resume over 1400 and that’ll stick a fork in him.

Judge, I agree with you in hoping we never see him running in a 1400m race in the spring.

But as far as a 2400m bridging run between the Qld Derby & the spring, what about the Grafton Cup?  I think it’s about 5-6 weeks after the Derby.

What weight would he get in a Grafton Cup ?

Johnston dreaming with Explosive stayer

James Tzaferis

James Tzaferis@Jtzaf

Mick Johnston is no stranger to Group 1 success.

The lucky owner has raced star gallopers including Dissident, Humidor and Tosen Stardom but he’s dreaming that Saturday’s South Australian Derby winner Explosive Jack could be the best of the lot.

After watching the three-year-old claim a third Derby for the season at Morphettville add to his wins in Sydney and Tasmania, Johnston admitted that he let his mind wander to what could be in the coming seasons.

A son of globetrotting stayer Jakkalberry, another talented horse that Johnston part-owned when he ran third in Green Moon’s Melbourne Cup, Explosive Jack was purchased on the advice of Peter Moody at the 2019 Karaka Yearling Sale.

While a tilt at history awaits in next month’s Queensland Derby, Johnston said the long-term aim would be to get Explosive Jack to Flemington in November for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup.

“It’s been a great ride far,” Johnston said.

“We raced Jakkalberry back in 2012 when he ran third in the Melbourne Cup.

“Before he got back into training, Peter Moody rang me when he was over in Karaka and told me he’d found a Jakkalberry colt that he liked and would I be interested in buying it.

“He purchased him, we syndicated him amongst friends and here we are today.

“We always dream, I think it’s everyone’s dream to have a Melbourne Cup runner, let alone a winner.

“Hopefully he stays sound and we can push on with him and get to Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.”

Explosive Jack was purchased by Moody for $100,000 out of the Novara Park draft in Book 1 of the 2019 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale.

He’s out of the Ekraar mare Extra Explosive, a half-sister to the dam of Group 1 New Zealand Derby hero Vin De Dance.

Jakkalberry stood as a stallion for four seasons before he died in 2018 as a result of complications relating to an intestinal condition.

Just hope he wont be cooked for the spring. Has had a hell of a campaign and a successful one too.

I hope you’re right but Sir Dragonet had never started under 2000 but the same stable thought they’d kick him off in the Orr.

Right now a connection’s probably wondering aloud about how good a Memsie would be for his stud value...
