Superb effort from a youngster that's tough as teak , hope he comes up in the spring and makes a cup horse.

Interesting pedigree.  Out of a Barathea mare. ( Jackkalberry I mean.)  I remember seeing him in his racing days.
Did I see somewhere that Jackkalberry died ?  Or am I dreaming. ?

Sorry to say this but it is a fact.

This horse is a stayer so no three month spell for him. If he is tough he should be showing up at Morphettville and showing up against the older horses in the Andrew Ramsden.

But alas, that will not happen, so good luck in the cups this spring, because the connections will need it.

With respect, couldn't agree.  Has been in work for 8 months, even if he's had just the 7 starts.  And we don't know what yesterday's race might have taken out of him.

So the SA Derby might be a rough possibility but the Ransden a dead set no-no.  Trying to achieve an auto entry into the MC doesn't make a lot of sense given the likelihood of it stuffing him.

No, six weeks in the paddock while there's still some decent grass and half-way decent weather.  And if he has any chance in the Cup he should surely be able to win or place in the Graded races that would sufficiently improve his rating in order to secure a start.

Just imo.

Voyager,

I think you’ll find the stable has already announced that he’ll likely press onto the SA Derby & Qld Derby in coming months.

If he runs well in those assignments, I’d assume the predictable HK mega-dollars offers will come in.  He’ll get shipped off to HK & probably never be heard of again.

Hope I’m wrong though.

Yes I agree Seconds , nothing wrong with a spell for this horse , we shall see what the trainer's plans are for this horse shortly , don't fall for this crap about keeping horses in work all year round their not machines , they may do it in the UK where the weathers shyte and can't have a proper spell , 4 to 6 weeks on the grass he'll love it cos he's earnt it imo.

No rest for the wicked & bad luck if he has any simmering micro fractures etc. as it's onwards & upwards apparently.

Explosive Jack’s groundbreaking three-year-old campaign may not be over, with connections eyeing off another Derby.

Speaking the day after the young stayer became the first horse to complete the Tasmanian Derby (2100m) - ATC Derby (2400m) double, trainer David Eustace said his campaign could be extended into May and even June.

Eustace said that the hardy son of Jakkalberry could tackle one or both of the South Australian Derby (2500m) and Queensland Derby (2400m), provided he recovers well from Saturday’s Group 1 win at Randwick.

The stable tried a similar campaign in 2017 with Ruthven, who won the Queensland Derby after finishing second in the South Australian Derby and fourth in the ATC Derby.

“He’s been in work for a long, long time and he’s been everywhere – he’s been to Goulburn, he’s been to Tassie and now up in Sydney,” Eustace said Racing.com's Raceday Live.

“He’s a bit of a sleeper as a horse, he’s taken a lot of education and I think he's only just starting to work it out - even the improvement between the Bendigo run and the win yesterday was huge.

"He’s racing very well and there are two more Derbies to go – Adelaide is in a month and Queensland is a month after that.

“We’ll see how he comes through the run, he went to the beach this morning but he’s a very sound horse and that's the plan at this stage."

Trainer Matt Cumani indicated that Khoekhoe, who finish fifth behind Explosive Jack on Saturday, will likely tackle the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Randwick later this month en route to the South Australian Derby (2500m).

If so, sounds like they don't believe he's MC standard so are setting him up for more results in weaker Group races before flogging him to Honkers.

The globe-trotting son of Storming Home (GB) covered four books of mares before dying of a gut infection in 2018.

who would have thought that Beau ghost, would figure in the pedigree of a derby winner?, as well as lads's love,, obviously gets some stamina influence from ekraar and further back though, jakkalberry won from 1200 to 2400m, his (jakkalberry) breeding imo suggests 1600 maybe 2000

Beau Ghost mate, indeed bred to sire sprinters.

But if he's five generations back just how much influence might he have?

And if the answer is yes he can, then it might actually help explain Explosive Jack's affinity with a slow track.  Wink

He's got the score on the board this trainer and there's one thing I'll give him credit for , he' never die wondering what is the potential of his horses if they show something , just looking at his winning filly Loving Gaby record ( including 2 trials) all up 15 in 15 months , $2-2 Mill. in prizemoney and now retired possibly worth the same amount as broodmare , job done , well done , maybe a lesser trainer may have pulled the pin on Sir Dragonet to get over his feet problems but that's debateable , he's in the QE 11 on Saturday and in it up to his ears after that Ranvet win imo.

* he'll.

I would agree Carioca with spelling, if you do not want to win a cup.

I am only making this statement from what the trainer said after the race.

He said it took a long time to get this horse to full fitness and when he did he was able to start him over a distance and then at his third start at Kembla he beat the older horses over 2400m.

If it takes him seven to eight weeks to get him fit enough for his fresh run, then that is not a great recipe to have a new season 4yo ready for the Cups. If they want to have a shot at either cup with this horse he can not have a full spell.

He needs a Persan style prep.

I have no problem with the trainer going to Adelaide, then Brisbane, and I am trusting the trainer knows what type of horse he has as he has shown he can train stayers in different ways.

The other option I can see happening is he has a light spring, maybe kick off in October like Persan and space his races to have a good crack as a five year old. He could run in a 2000m race fresh, into the Zipping Classic, into the Bagot, and go from there.

If I was an owner I would be quite happy with getting two or three group 1 wins as a three year old, having a light spring and then targeting the spring cups as a fully developed five year old.

Yes things could go wrong, but that can happen with a four year old cups campaign (see Quick Thinker and Age Of Truth among others), at least with the outlined program you could give him his optimum chance to win one of the cups if stayed sound.

Depending on his Benchmark rating when he starts his Spring 4 year old season I would think a camapign like the Naturalism into the Bart Cummings into the Moonee Valley Cup into the Melbourne Cup.

I am not sure he will be or is fast enough for a Caulfield Cup.

Should he run in both the SA and Qld Derbies it'll be a huge effort to keep him up for a searching Spring.

Unless the co-trainers rely on advice from successful UK trainers or their Oz proponent on here.  Wink

Most he did with his dad was muck out boxes, however may well have picked up a few hints up along the way.  Then in Oz first worked for the Snowden's who given their training proclivities may have significantly dulled his memory of "Stayer Training 101".

Though am being a tad tongue in cheek.  Wink

They've done a mighty job to have this horse up to peak form for such a while , that's the " art " in training , get them there and keep them there , any mug can train a horse , but knowing there " there " is the difference imo.

Jakkalberry won the American St. Leger over ~2700 m (13 1/2 furlongs) at Arlington Park (Illinois) so he definitely could go further than the 2400m if he follows his father's footsteps.

Okay have found our one and only top class 3yo for the season Star

That was a cracking win by a horse in form.

DO NOT SPELL THIS HORSE, I REPEAT DO NOT SPELL THIS HORSE. He is getting better with each run.

I would just about back him to beat Persan in the Andrew Ramsden if he showed up, and that is saying something.
